Structure-Activity Relationship, Cytotoxicity and Mode of Action of 2-Ester-substituted 1,5-Benzothiazepines as Potent Antifungal Agents

Our studies examined the structural features responsible for the antifungal activity of 2-ethoxycarbonyl-1,5- benzothiazepine （7a）. Three series of 1,5-benzothiazepine derivatives were synthesized and screened for their antifungal activity. The results suggested that the ethoxycarbonyl group at the 2 position and the imine moiety on the seven-membered ring are essential for activity. The most potent of the synthesized analogues （7a, 7b） were further studied by evaluating their cytotoxicity and mode of action （for 7a）. The results showed that compounds 7a and 7b were relatively safe for BV2 cells, but compound 7a interfered with Cryptococcus neoformans cell wall integrity by increasing the chitinase activity. Therefore, compound 7a was considered safe as an antifungal agent for animal cells.     

The Effect of Substituents on Ring Size in Cyclopolymerization: An Explanation Based on Frontier Orbital Theory

Fully identified cyclic structures formed via radically initiated cyclizations and cyclopolymerizations are explained using frontier orbital theory. This theory, briefly introduced here for general application to organic polymer chemistry, works very well in explaining the ring size in cyclopolymerization except when steric hindrance is predominant in controlling the course of cyclization.     

Surface characterization of TEMPO‐oxidized bacterial cellulose

In this study, we focused on the surface character of bacterial cellulose (BC) before and after oxidation mediated by 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO).Solid‐state ¹³C NMR, XPS, SEM, contact angle and surface free energy analyses were performed to investigate the effects of various parameters (reaction time and oxidant and catalyst concentrations) on the surface composition, morphology and polarity of the BC. The results provided by the combined use of these techniques showed that hydrogen bonds were disrupted on the BC surface after carboxylation occurred; therefore, the surface of oxidized BC was rougher than that of the original BC, and the surface free energy, especially the polar components, increased after oxidation. Convenient Synthesis of Highly Substituted Imidazole Derivatives

A one-pot synthesis of the trisubstituted imidazole derivatives from α-acetoxy-α-chloro-β-keto-esters, aldehydes, and ammonium acetate has been developed.     

Design and characterization of guided mode resonance filters with the improved structure for facile fabrication

In this study, a guided mode resonance filter with the improved structure for facile fabrication is designed; the properties of the designed filters are simulated by rigorous coupled wave analysis. It is found that the resonance wavelength and spectral linewidth are slightly increased with the increasing of the grating thickness, and seldom changed with the thickness of the grating filling factor, as the parameter error of the grating thickness and the grating filling factor are deviated from the designed value by ±10%, respectively, which are very favorable for simplifying preparation process of the GMR filter.     

Mesomorphic bipyridine building blocks bearing an sp3 carbon and a hydroxy function

The synthesis of novel symmetrical liquid crystalline compounds based on 5-methyl-5-[2-(4-alkyloxyphenyl)-2-hydroxyethyl]-2,2-bipyridines is reported, together with some physical properties. Although the chelating head-groups are connected via a chiral sp³ carbon atom, all the materials are mesomorphic. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding between pyridino and hydroxy fragments in the mesophases is made apparent by FTIR spectroscopy.     

UV beam-assisted efficient formation of surface relief grating on azobenzene polymers

An efficient method is demonstrated to improve the formation of a surface relief grating (SRG) with a high amplitude. The SRG is realized by a two-beam interference technique (λ=532 nm) in an azobenzene side-chain copolymer. An UV laser beam (λ=355 nm), called assisting beam, was used to accelerate the photoisomerization process from cis-form to trans-form, resulting in a rapid cis-form ? trans-form cycle. This UV beam-assisted method allowed to increase the diffraction efficiency of the formed SRG as well as its depth. Stable gratings with modulation depth as high as 410 nm were obtained at room temperature with moderate laser power.     

Study on information content of the 3D object's coherent imaging and hologram information redundancy

On the basis of the light field distribution of objects with coherent illumination, and the most basic physical mechanism of binocular stereoscopic vision, we calculate the information content of the light field in ‘the smallest observation window’ produced by a point source and multi-points source respectively, and ‘the smallest observation window’ means that the size of the window just satisfies the demand of binocular stereo vision. As a result, the minimum information content of the light field that the binocular stereo vision needed is acquired. Comparing the information content of hologram with that of the light field in the hologram plane, we make out the redundancy of holographic information content and point out the direction of the holographic compression.     

A new method for preparing TiO2 catalyst honeycombs without sintering

Composite catalyst honeycombs without sintering were prepared via kneading, mulling, extrusion molding, and solidifying at room temperature with the magnesite oxychloride gels modified by nano-rice husk ash (RHA) as a solidifying agent. The effects of nano-RHA and composite water-resistant agents on the water resistance of magnesite materials were studied. The solidification of the modified magnesite gels on TiO₂ catalyst honeycombs was analyzed. The experiments show that the proportional addition of nano-RHA markedly increases the water resistance of magnesite materials without reducing the bending strength, and the softening coefficient increases from 0.29 to 0.78. With further addiition of the complex water-resistant agents, the softening coefficient increases from 0.78 to 0.97. The optimal mass ratio of MgO in the solidifying agent to TiO₂ is 4:1, and the bending strength of unsintered catalyst honeycombs is 11.46 MPa. The desulfurization rate and denitration rate of this composite catalyst honeycomb on simulation smoke was 97 and 65 %, respectively, in 3 h.
