Organochlorine Pesticides in Water,Sediment and Fish from the Nile River and Manzala Lake in Egypt

Abstract

To assess the risks of organochlorine pesticides discharged into the hydrospheric environment of Egypt, river and lake water, drinking water, suspended solids, sediments and fish were collected during 1993—1994 from the Nile River and Manzala Lake in Egypt and were transported to Japan for chemical analysis. Among different organochlorine pesticides analyzed, p,p′-DDE was the most predominant in fish (7.6 to 67 ng/g wet wt.), sediments (3.2 to 432 ng/g dry wt.) and suspended solids (5.3 tc 138 pg/L). However, in the dissolved phase of water samples HCH compounds predominated (α-HCH, 71 to 2,815 pg/L). Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides, except chlordane, were higher in Manzala Lake than in the River Nile. Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides in fish corresponded with those in sediments from each location. Comparison of organochlorine concentrations in Nile River water with those reported in earlier studies suggested a decrease in concentrations during the last decade. However, concentrations of p,p′-DDE has increased in fish. It appears that the release of this metabolite from contaminated sediment is the major source of p,p′-DDE in fish during recent years.     

Synthesis of a novel potential tridentate anthracene ligand, 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-9-bromoanthracene,and its application as chelate ligand for synthesis of the corresponding boron and palladium compounds

A novel potential tridentate ligand, 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-9-bromoanthracene, was synthesized. The key steps are as follows: 1) dimethylamination of 1,8-dibromo-9-methoxyanthracene by a modified Buchwald's method to afford 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-9-methoxyanthracene, and 2) reduction of the methoxy group by LDBB (lithium di-tert-butylbiphenylide) followed by treatment with BrCF2CF2Br. The corresponding 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-9-lithioanthracene, which should be a useful versatile tridentate ligand, could be generated by treatment of the bromide with one equivalent of nBuLi. The lithioanthracene reacted with B-chloroborane derivatives to give three 9-boryl derivatives. Although we recently reported that the crystal structure of 1,8-dimethoxy-9-B-catecholateborylanthracene was a symmetrical compound with the almost identical two O-B distances (2.379(2) and 2.441(2) A), the newly prepared 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-9-borylanthracene derivatives clearly have unsymmetrical structures with coordination of only one NMe2 group toward the central boron atom. However, the energy difference between the unsymmetrical and symmeterical structures was found to be very small based on 1H NMR measurements, in which symmetrical anthracene patterns in the aromatic region (two kinds of doublets and a triplet) and a sharp singlet signal of the two NMe2 groups were observed even at -80 degrees C. 1,8-Bis(dimethylamino)-9-bromoanthracene itself can be a versatile ligand for transition metal compounds. In fact, direct palladation of the bromide took place by the reaction with [Pd2(dba)3].CHCl3 in THF to give the 9-palladated product. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the Pd compound showed that the square planar palladium atom was coordinated in a symmetrical fashion by both NMe2 groups (Pd-N bonds are 2.138(5) and 2.146(5) A).     

Asymmetric synthesis of alpha-amino acids: indium-mediated reactions of glyoxylic oxime ether in aqueous media

The indium-mediated allylation and alkylation reactions of the Oppolzer camphorsultam derivative of glyoxylic oxime ether proceeded with excellent diastereoselectivity in aqueous media, providing a variety of enantiomerically pure alpha-amino acids.     

Temperature dependence of free volume of polyacrylamide gels studied by positron lifetime measurements

Changes of positronium (Ps) cavity radii in polyacrylamide and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gels were studied from 120 to 300 K by positron lifetime technique and it has been shown that the Ps cavity radius in the hydrogels changes by three or four stages. Temperature dependence of the Ps cavity radius exhibits variations similar to common polymers around the glass transition temperature. Hydrophilicity of the polymer chains significantly affects the Ps cavity radius just below 273 K. These results suggest an important role of free volume on the state of water in hydrogels.     

Synthesis and photoluminescence study of anthracene based dendrimer and dendron

A new type of polyaromatic dendrimer composed of six anthracene groups was synthesized, which showed a monomeric fluorescence feature with a diminished quantum yield due to intramolecular self-quenching processes in the dendritic framework.     

Heterometallic hexanuclear cluster with an S = 8 spin ground state: MnII[MnII(hfac)2]3[NiII(pao)3]2 (hfac- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate,pao- = pyridine-2-aldoximate)

The heterometallic Mn(II)(4)Ni(II)(2) title compound has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The compound consists of a Ni-Mn-Ni linear moiety, [[Ni-(mu-NO)(3)](2)-Mn], linked by oximate bridges and three Mn(II) hfac terminal units attached by oximate oxygens in a di-mu-oxo fashion, forming a novel heterometallic cluster: Mn[Mn(hfac)(2)](3)[Ni(pao)(3)](2) (1). Magnetic measurements reveal the antiferromagnetic nature of the oximate pathway between Mn(II) and Ni(II) metal ions, which imposes an unusual high-spin ground state (S = 8) for 1.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.     

Application of 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolizinium perchlorate in the synthesis of 7a-substituted hexahydro-1h-pyrrolizines

The method for preparing 7a-substituted hexahydro-1H-pyrrolizines 2 from 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrol-izinium Perchlorate (3) was investigated, by which introduction of a wide variety of functionalities on C(7a) could be achieved easily.     

Formation of Defect-Spinel Phase in CdSnO3

A spinel-type structure was found in cadmium stannate CdSnO₃ prepared by thermal decomposition of the hydroxostannate CdSn(OH)₆ at 550–800°C. Its occurrence depends strongly on the precipitation conditions of CdSn(OH)₆ from CdCl₂ and Na₂Sn(OH)₆ aqueous solutions. In the (Cd_1–xCa_x)SnO₃ system, the spinel phase appears in the composition range of 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.35. The experimental results suggest the presence of cation vacancies in the spinel octahedral sites.
