Fundamental aspects of initiated oxidation of tridecane and polyethylene in solutions

Specific features of the initiated oxidation of polyethylene and its low-molecular-weight analogue tridecane, associated with the occurrence of the process in the short-chain mode, were studied.     

Thermodynamic properties of ternary systems: Calculation of standard enthalpies of solvation of triols, diols, and a series of their ethers in water-methanol mixed solvent

An equation for the standard enthalpy of solvation of a compound in a binary solvent is derived. The enthalpies of solvation in water-methanol mixtures are estimated for 1,3-propane-and 1,6-hexanediols, 1,2,4-butane-and 1,3,5-pentanetriols, 2-methoxy-and 2-propoxyethanols, and diethylene glycol. The enthalpy of solvation of 1,2-dimethoxyethane in the water-methanol mixed solvent is determined experimentally.     

Conformational characteristics of polycaproamide in dimethylacetamide containing lithium chloride

The viscosity behavior, index of refraction, and density of dilute polycaproamide solutions in DMAc containing lithium chloride have been studied. On the basis of temperature dependences of the index of refraction and the density of solutions, the θ-condition of polycaproamide solutions in DMAc containing 2.5% lithium chloride is estimated as 21.3°C. From intrinsic viscosity [η] measurements, the coefficients of swelling of a polymer coil, the mean-square distance between chain ends, and other parameters of macromolecules in solution are calculated.     

Recovered-voltage phenomenon and prospects for its use for assessment of the condition of polymers

A general theory of the phenomenon of recovered voltage in polymers was considered on the basis of representation of an actual poling process by a discrete set of Debye relaxators. Examples of numerical solution of the direct and inverse problems are given. A correlation expression between intentionally aged polymer specimens and recovered-voltage curves was proposed for use in the assessment of the material state of a polymer under actual service conditions. It was shown that it is sufficient to restrict consideration to three relaxation processes in analysis of the phenomenon.     

Current distribution and giant magnetoimpedance in composite wires with helical magnetic anisotropy

The giant magnetoimpedance effect in composite wires consisting of a non-magnetic inner core and soft magnetic shell is studied theoretically. It is assumed that the magnetic shell has a helical anisotropy. The current and field distributions in the composite wire are found by means of a simultaneous solution of Maxwell equations and the Landau–Lifshitz equation. The expressions for the diagonal and off-diagonal impedance are obtained for low and high frequencies. The dependences of the impedance on the anisotropy axis angle and the shell thickness are analyzed. Maximum field sensitivity is shown to correspond to the case of the circular anisotropy in the magnetic shell. It is demonstrated that the optimum shell thickness to obtain maximum impedance ratio is equal to the effective skin depth in the magnetic material.     

A simple model to extract hyperfine interaction distributions from Mössbauer spectra

The general problem of finding a distribution in hyperfine interaction parameters from experimental Mössbauer spectra is outlined. Existing methods may lack flexibility to be easily applicable to simple problems. A line shape for hyperfine parameter distributions is given, which is based on linear segments in the probability function. This method is applied in the analysis of samples containing iron in a silicate glass.     

Magnetic,electrical transport and electron spin resonance studies of ferromagnetic insulating manganites Nd0.85Na0.15MnO3

We have investigated the magnetic, electrical transport and electron spin resonance (ESR) properties of polycrystalline Nd_0.85Na_0.15MnO₃ prepared by sol–gel method. A ferromagnetic–paramagnetic (FM–PM) transition is observed around 110 K, which is not accompanied by a metal–insulator transition. The sample displays the complete PM state associated with the ESR spectra fitted by single Lorentzian line shape above 130 K. Below 130 K, ESR spectra become distorted and then linewidth increases rapidly, where short-range magnetic order develops and coexists with PM phase due to the inhomogeneous magnetic state. In addition, the large difference between the activation energies obtained from the resistivity and ESR parameters (peak-to-peak linewidth and line intensity) at the frame of adiabatic small polaron hopping model is pointed out for Nd_0.85Na_0.15MnO₃.

Transient-field strength measurements for52Cr traversing Fe hosts at high velocity and polarization transfer mechanisms

Transient-field strengths were measured for⁵²Cr ions traversing polarized Fe hosts at velocities up to 12υ₀ (12υ₀ =c/137 = Bohr velocity). The results are compared with predictions of various transient-field parametrizations and discussed in terms of possible mechanisms by which polarization might be transferred from the Fe host to inner vacancies of the moving Cr ions. Theg-factor of the first 2⁺ state of⁵²Cr was also measured by the transient-field technique and found to be in accord with shell model calculations.
