Single-crystal elasticity of the rhodochrosite at high pressure by Brillouin scattering spectroscopy

ABSTRACT

The sound velocity properties of single-crystal rhodochrosite (MnCO₃) were determined up to 9.7?GPa at ambient temperature by Brillouin scattering spectroscopy. Six elastic constants were calculated by a genetic algorithm method using the Christoffel's equations at each pressure. The elastic constants increased linearly as a function of pressure and its pressure derivatives ?Cij/?P for C₁₁, C₃₃, C₄₄, C₁₂, C₁₃, C₁₄ were 5.86 (±0.36), 3.82 (±0.44), 2.06 (±0.39), 5.07 (±0.27), 5.34 (±0.44), 1.52 (±0.24), respectively. Based on the derived elastic constants of rhodochrosite, the aggregate adiabatic bulk and shear moduli (K_s and G) were calculated using the Voigt-Reuss-Hill averages and the linear fitting coefficients (?K_s/?P)_T and (?G/?P)_T were 5.05(±0.26) and 0.73(±0.05), respectively. The aggregate V_p of rhodochrosite increased clearly as a function of pressure and its pressure derivative ?V_p/?P was 7.99(±0.53)?×?10^?2?km/(s?GPa), while the aggregate V_s increased slowly and ?V_s/?P was only 1.19(±0.12)?×?10^?2?km/(s?GPa). The anisotropy factor for As of rhodochrosite increased from ～40% at 0.8?GPa to ～48% at 9.7?GPa, while A_p decreased from ～19% to ～16% at the corresponding pressure.

Second order parabolic equations in Banach spaces with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we exhibit a unified treatment of the mixed initial boundary value problem for second order (in time) parabolic linear differential equations in Banach spaces, whose boundary conditions are of a dynamical nature. Results regarding existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence (on initial data) and regularity of classical and strict solutions are established. Moreover, several examples are given as samples for possible applications.

     

Field—ion microscopy observation of single—walled carbon nanotubes

Field-ion microscopy(FIM),a tool for surface analysis with atomic resolution,has been employed to observe the end structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs).FIM images revealed the existence of open SWCNT ends,Amorphous carbon atoms were also observed to occur around SWCNTs and traditional field evaporation failed to remove them.Heat treatment was found to be efficacious in altering the end structures of SWCNT bundles.Carbon and oxygen atoms released from heated tungsten filament are believed to be responsible for the decoration imposed on the SWCNT ends.     

Modulational instability of ion—acoustic waves in a warm plasma

Using the standard reductive perturbation technique,a nonlinear Schroedinger equation is derived to study the modulational instability of finite-amplitude ion-acoustic waves in a non-magnetized warm plasma.It is found that the inclusion of ion temperature in the equation modifies the nature of the ion-acoustic wave stability and the soliton stuctures.The effects of ion plasma temperature on the modulational stability and ion-acoustic wave properties are inestigated in detail.     

Flow Search Approach and New Bounds for the m-Step Linear Conjugate Gradient Algorithm

A flow search approach is presented in this paper. In the approach, each iterative process involves a subproblem, whose variables are the stepsize parameters. Every feasible solution of the subproblem corresponds to some serial search stages, the stepsize parameters in different search stages may interact mutually, and their optimal values are determined by evaluating the total effect of the interaction. The main idea of the flow search approach is illustrated via the minimization of a convex quadratic function. Based on the flow search approach, some properties of the m-step linear conjugate gradient algorithm are analyzed and new bounds on its convergence rate are also presented. Theoretical and numerical results indicate that the new bounds are better than the well-known ones.     

Artificial boundary conditions for Petrovsky systems of second order in exterior domains and in other domains of conical type

The approximation of solutions to boundary value problems on unbounded domains by those on bounded domains is one of the main applications for artificial boundary conditions. Based on asymptotic analysis, here a new method is presented to construct local artificial boundary conditions for a very general class of elliptic problems where the main asymptotic term is not known explicitly. Existence and uniqueness of approximating solutions are proved together with asymptotically precise error estimates. One class of important examples includes boundary value problems for anisotropic elasticity and piezoelectricity. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

统计优化迭代法测量质子交换波导折射率分布

提出了一种用于拟合测量渐变波导的折射率分布的新的理论处理。该方法把统计优化手段导入循环迭代法 ,可适用于费米函数这一类曲线变化范围大、且有多个自变量的函数。实验上用焦磷酸质子交换制备了LiNbO3波导样品 ,用该方法对退火后的折射率分布作了测量拟合 ,折射率拟合值与实验值的均方差为± 8.2× 10 - 4。
