Modification of montmorillonite with cationic surfactant and application in electrochemical determination of 4-chlorophenol

Herein, montmorillonite calcium was exchanged with a cationic surfactant: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The resulting CTAB-modified montmorillonite calcium (CTAB-MMT) shows higher accumulation efficiency to 4-chlorophenol compared with the unmodified MMT. At the CTAB-MMT-modified carbon paste electrode, the oxidation peak current of 4-chlorophenol remarkably increases. Based on this, a novel, sensitive and convenient electrochemical method was developed for the determination of 4-chlorophenol. The oxidation peak current of 4-chlorophenol is proportional to its concentration over the range from 5.0 x 10(-8) to 1.0 x 10(-5) mol L(-1). The limit of detection is evaluated to be 2.0 x 10(-8) mol L(-1) for 2 min accumulation. Finally this newly proposed method was successfully applied to determine 4-chlorophenol in water samples.     

Preparation and Biological Evaluation of [99mTc]Tc-CNGU as a PSMA-Targeted Radiotracer for the Imaging of Prostate Cancer

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a well-established biological target that is overexpressed on the surface of prostate cancer lesions. Radionuclide-labeled small-molecule PSMA inhibitors have been shown to be promising PSMA-specific agents for the diagnosis and therapy of prostate cancer. In this study, a glutamate-urea-based PSMA-targeted ligand containing an isonitrile (CNGU) was synthesized and labeled with ^99mTc to prepare [^99mTc]Tc-CNGU with a high radiochemical purity (RCP). The CNGU ligand showed a high affinity toward PSMA (K_i value is 8.79 nM) in LNCaP cells. The [^99mTc]Tc-CNGU exhibited a good stability in vitro and hydrophilicity (log P = −1.97 ± 0.03). In biodistribution studies, BALB/c nude mice bearing LNCaP xenografts showed that the complex had a high tumor uptake with 4.86 ± 1.19% ID/g, which decreased to 1.74 ± 0.90% ID/g after a pre-injection of the selective PSMA inhibitor ZJ-43, suggesting that it was a PSMA-specific agent. Micro-SPECT imaging demonstrated that the [^99mTc]Tc-CNGU had a tumor uptake and that the uptake was reduced in the image after blocking with ZJ-43, further confirming its PSMA specificity. All of the results in this work indicated that [^99mTc]Tc-CNGU is a promising PSMA-specific tracer for the imaging of prostate cancer.     

Laboratory and Field Evaluation of the Phytotoxic Activity of Sapindus mukorossi Gaertn Pulp Extract and Identification of a Phytotoxic Substance

Interest in finding plant-based herbicides to supplement synthesized herbicides is increasing. Although the extract of Sapindus mukorossi Gaertn has been reported to have herbicidal activity, little is known about phytotoxic substances and their efficacy of weed control in the field. To identify phytotoxic substances, the bioassay-guided fractionation by column chromatography and high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) was carried out. The phytotoxic activity assay, performed by the agar medium method, showed that the 70% ethanol fraction exhibited strong root growth inhibition against Trifolium pratense with an 50% inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) value of 35.13 mg/L. An active compound was isolated from the 70% ethanol fraction and identified as hederagenin 3-o-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-l-arabinopyranoside (Compound A). Compound A had an IC₅₀ value of 16.64 mg/L. Finally, a new formulation was prepared based on the 70% ethanol fraction, which exhibited good efficacy against broadleaf weeds in a carrot field. The fresh weight control efficacy was 78.7% by 45 days after treatment at the dose of 1500 g a. i./ha. Hence, the extract of S. mukorossi pulp could be a promising supplement to the synthesized herbicides. Furthermore, compound A from S. mukorossi may be responsible for its phytotoxic activity.

Carboxylated Hexagonal Boron Nitride/Graphene Configuration for Electrosynthesis of High-Concentration Neutral Hydrogen Peroxide

The electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) via two-electron (2e⁻) oxygen (O₂) reduction reaction (ORR) has great potential to replace the traditional energy-intensive anthraquinone process, but the design of low-cost and highly active and selective catalysts is greatly challenging for the long-term H₂O₂ production under industrial relevant current density, especially under neutral electrolytes. To address this issue, this work constructed a carboxylated hexagonal boron nitride/graphene (h-BN/G) heterojunction on the commercial activated carbon through the coupling of B, N co-doping with surface oxygen groups functionalization. The champion catalyst exhibited a high 2e⁻ ORR selectivity (>95 %), production rate (up to 13.4 mol g⁻¹ h⁻¹), and Faradaic efficiency (FE, >95 %). The long-term H₂O₂ production under the high current density of 100 mA cm⁻² caused the cumulative concentration as high as 2.1 wt %. The combination of in situ Raman spectra and theoretical calculation indicated that the carboxylated h-BN/G configuration promotes the adsorption of O₂ and the stabilization of the key intermediates, allowing a low energy barrier for the rate-determining step of HOOH* release from the active site and thus improving the 2e⁻ ORR performance. The fast dye degradation by using this electrochemical synthesized H₂O₂ further illustrated the promising practical application.

Ω-compact semigroups having congruence extension property

The congruence extension property (CEP) of semigroups has been extensively studied by a number of authors. We call a compact semigroup S an Ω-compact semigroup if the set of all regular elements of S forms an ideal of S. In this note, we characterize the Ω-compact semigroup having (CEP). Our result extends a recent result obtained by X.J. Guo on the congruence extension property of strong Ω-compact semigroups which is a semigroup containing precisely one regular D-class.
