Variational aspects of the Seiberg-Witten functional

The Seiberg-Witten equations that have recently found important applications for four-dimensional geometry are the Euler-Lagrange equations for a functional involving a connection A on a line bundleL and a section of another bundleW ⁺ constructed fromL and a spinor bundle on a given four-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We show the regularity of weak solutions and the Palais-Smale condition for this functional.     

Total Synthesis of d,l-Isospongiadiol: An Intramolecular Radical Cascade Approach to Furanoditerpenes

A stereoselective oxidative free-radical cyclization of beta-keto ester polyenes 7 and 19 has been accomplished as a one-step entry to the tricarbocyclic synthons 8and 21 which contain five and six stereogenic centers, respectively. These key synthons possessing an axial carboethoxy group at C-4 were ultimately converted to the spongian skeleton (8--> 14 and 21 --> 25 -->14). The synthesis of d,l-isospongiadiol (3) from the common intermediate 14 was realized after introduction of the 2alpha-hydroxy group in the spongian A-ring via epoxidation of silyl enol ether 28 and subsequent desilylation.     

Novel Rearrangements of 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanol Derivatives: Formation of Dialkyl Sulfide, Dialkyl Disulfide, and 1,2,3-Tris(alkylthio)propane

The base alkylation of 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol with alkyl halides leads in good yield to 2,3-bis(alkylthio)-1-propanol and dialkyl sulfide. The reaction of 2,3-bis(alkylthio)-1-propanol with catalytic concentrated sulfuric acid proceeds with rearrangement to give 1,2,3-tris(alkylthio)propane and dialkyl disulfide. The rearrangement reaction takes place through a common intermediate thiaranium intermediate 8.     

The radioisotopic battery based on radio-voltaic effect

The radio-voltaic effect is investigated to be applied radioisotopic batteries in this work. The collection rates of the electron-hole pairs are 94 percent for the alpha particles emitted by²³⁹Pu source and 65 percent for the beta particles emitted by⁹⁰Sr-⁹⁰Y source. The maximum energy conversion efficiency got by the silicon element is about 16%. A prototype radioisotopic battery with¹⁴⁷Pm beta sources is constructed. Its maximum short-circuit current and off voltage are about 2 A and 190 mV respectively. The experimental data suggest that the life of the prototype battery may be more than three years.
