A one-step protocol for the chemical derivatisation of glass microfluidic devices

A simple and robust derivatisation system for glass and silica microdevices is described. The device surface is coated in a one-step treatment with a highly cross-linked polystyrene/divinylbenzene/allylsiloxane copolymer. The surface derivatisation is highly resistant to solvents, acids, bases and oxidising or reducing agents.     

On gonality of Riemann surfaces

A compact Riemann surface X is called a (p, n)-gonal surface if there exists a group of automorphisms C of X (called a (p, n)-gonal group) of prime order p such that the orbit space X/C has genus n. We derive some basic properties of (p, n)-gonal surfaces considered as generalizations of hyperelliptic surfaces and also examine certain properties which do not generalize. In particular, we find a condition which guarantees all (p, n)-gonal groups are conjugate in the full automorphism group of a (p, n)-gonal surface, and we find an upper bound for the size of the corresponding conjugacy class. Furthermore we give an upper bound for the number of conjugacy classes of (p, n)-gonal groups of a (p, n)-gonal surface in the general case. We finish by analyzing certain properties of quasiplatonic (p, n)-gonal surfaces. An open problem and two conjectures are formulated in the paper.     

Evidence for the quantum birth of our universe

We present evidence for a nonsingular origin of the Universe with intial conditions determined by quantum physics and relativistic gravity. In particular, we establish that the present temperature of the microwave background and the present density of the Universe agree well with our predictions from these intial conditions, after evolution to the present age using the Einstein-Friedmann equation. Remarkably, the quantum origin for the Universe naturally allows its evolution at exactly the critical density. We also discuss the consequences of these results to some fundamental aspects of quantum physics in the early Universe.     

13C-aminopyrine demethylation is decreased in cirrhotic patients with normal biochemical markers

This study determined the rates of ¹³C-aminopyrine metabolism in patients with varying degrees of liver cirrhosis as defined by clinical scores. Twenty-five cirrhotic patients and 18 healthy subjects underwent a ¹³C-aminopyrine breath test. The cumulative per cent dose recovery (cPDR) of ¹³C on breath expressed as a percentage of the administered dose at 2 h was significantly lower in cirrhotic patients than in healthy subjects (median: 1.7% versus 9.0%; p<.0001). Significant inverse associations between cPDR at 2 h and the model for end-stage liver disease score, Child–Pugh score, international normalised ratio and bilirubin (all p<.05), but not alanine aminotransferase or alkaline phosphatase were observed in the cirrhotic patients. Taking each biochemical marker independently, cirrhotic patients with normal biochemistry had a significantly lower cPDR at 2 h than healthy subjects (all p<.05). Differences in ¹³C-aminopyrine metabolism were evident in cirrhotic patients with less severe disease and may mark hepatic dysfunction when conventional biochemical markers appear unchanged.     

Adiabatic electron thermal pressure fluctuations in tokamak plasmas

Electron thermal pressure fluctuations measured in the edge plasma of the Texas Experimental Tokamak Upgrade are a fundamental component of plasma turbulence on both sides of the velocity shear layer. The ratio of specific heats, estimated from fluctuations in electron temperature and electron number density measured simultaneously at the same electrode, indicates that observed fluctuations are adiabatic. The observations are made by means of a novel Langmuir probe technique, the time domain triple-probe method, which concurrently measures multiple plasma properties at each of two electrodes with the temporal and the spatial resolution required to estimate thermodynamic properties in a turbulent plasma.

Photolabile precursors of cyclic nucleotides with high aqueous solubility and stability

Photolabile phosphotriester derivatives of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP are described, where the additional group on the phosphate is a 2-nitrobenzyl that bears an electron-withdrawing and dianionic substituent. This confers high aqueous solubility and excellent resistance to hydrolysis of the phosphotriester (t(1/2) for hydrolysis at pH 7, 22 degrees C, is >3 months for the axial isomers 3a and 4a and >1 month for the equatorial isomers 3b and 4b). The photolysis quantum yields are in the range 0.15-0.24, and the product release rate upon flash photolysis is 1.7 s(-1) at pH 7.0, 20 degrees C.
