Increasing the length of an alkyl side chain on a rigid polynorbornene (PNB) backbone is shown to decrease the glass‐transition temperature of the resultant polymer, decrease the density of the bulk polymer, decrease the number and average free‐volume element size present, and decrease the permeability of gases through the polymer. Methyl‐, butyl‐, and hexyl‐substituted PNBs were investigated. Experimental results were compared with predictions based on molecular modeling. By using models that provided good agreement between the experimental and simulated wide‐angle diffraction patterns, the distributions of free‐volume elements were predicted. These predictions clearly indicate that the number of large free‐volume elements decreases as the length of the side chain increases, suggesting that the flexible aliphatic side chains can be largely accommodated within the free volume between the rigid PNB backbones. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The rigid‐rod polymers, poly(2,6‐naphthalenebenzobisoxazole) (Naph‐2,6‐PBO) and poly(1,5‐naphthalenebenzobisoxazole) (Naph‐1,5‐PBO) were synthesized by high temperature polycondensation of isomeric naphthalene dicarboxylic acids with 4,6‐diaminoresorcinol dihydrochloride in polyphosphoric acid. Expectedly, these polymers were found to have high thermal as well as thermooxidative stabilities, similar to what has been reported for other polymers of this class. The chain conformations of Naph‐2,6‐PBO and Naph‐1,5‐PBO were trans and the crystal structures of Naph‐2,6‐PBO and Naph‐1,5‐PBO had the three‐dimensional order, although the axial disorder existed for both Naph‐2,6‐PBO and Naph‐1,5‐PBO. Naph‐2,6‐PBO exhibited a more pronounced axial disorder than Naph‐1,5‐PBO because of its more linear shape. The repeat unit distance for Naph‐2,6‐PBO (14.15 Å) was found to be larger compared with that of Naph‐1,5‐PBO (12.45 Å) because of the more kinked structure of the latter. The extents of staggering between the adjacent chains in the ac projection of the crystal structure were 0.25c and 0.23c for Naph‐2,6‐PBO and Naph‐1,5‐PBO, respectively. Naph‐1,5‐PBO has a more kinked and twisted chain structure relative to Naph‐2,6‐PBO. The kinked and twisted chain structure of Naph‐1,5‐PBO in the crystal seems to prevent slippage between adjacent chains in the crystal structure. The more perfect crystal structure of Naph‐1,5‐PBO may be due to this difficulty in the occurrence of the slippage. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work demonstrates a highly specific and selective assembly of multisegmented nanowires on prepatterned gold electrodes using DNA hybridization. Multisegmented Au/Pd/Au nanowires were synthesized using template‐directed electrodeposition. Two complementary single‐stranded DNAs modified with thiol tags adsorb on gold electrodes and gold segments of nanowires, and enable the nanowires to assemble across electrodes. The assembled nanowires show ohmic contact with minimum contact resistance. Using these nanowires, the temperature dependent electrical resistance and the sensing performance toward hydrogen were investigated. The temperature coefficient of resistance of nanowires was lower than bulk polycrystalline counterpart, because of higher electron scattering at the surface and grain boundaries of nanowires. The nanowires were sensitive toward hydrogen gas at room temperature with a detection limit of 0.5%.  相似文献

Compliant electrodes to replace conventional metal electrodes have been required for many actuators to relieve the constraint on the electroactive layer. Many conducting polymers have been proposed for the alternative electrodes, but they still have a problem of poor thermal stability. This article reports a novel all- organic actuator with single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films as an alternative electrode. The SWCNT film was obtained by filtering a SWCNT solution through an anodized alumina membrane. The conductivity of the SWCNT film was about 280 S/cm. The performance of the SWCNT film electrode was characterized by measuring the dielectric properties of NASA Langley Research Center – Electroactive Polymer (LaRC-EAP) sandwiched by the SWCNT electrodes over a broad range of temperature (from 25 to 280 °C) and frequency (from 1 kHz to 1 MHz). The all-organic actuator with the SWCNT electrodes showed a larger electric field-induced strain than that with metal electrodes, under identical measurement conditions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of highly active ethylene polymerization catalysts based on bidendate α‐diimine ligands coordinated to nickel are reported. The ligands are prepared via the condensation of bulky ortho‐substituted anilines bearing remote push–pull substituents with acenaphthenequinone, and the precatalysts are prepared via coordination of these ligands to (DME)NiBr2 (DME = 1,2‐dimethoxyethane) to form complexes having general formula [ZN = C(An)‐C(An) = NZ]NiBr2 [Z = (4‐NH2‐3,5‐C6H2R2)2CH(4‐C6H4Y); An, acenaphthene quinone; R, Me, Et, iPr; Y = H, NO2, OCH3]. When activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO) or common alkyl aluminiums such as ethyl aluminium sesquichloride (EAS) all catalysts polymerize ethylene with activities exceeding 107 g‐PE/ mol‐Ni h atm at 30 °C and atmospheric pressure. Among the cocatalysts used EAS records the best activity. Effects of remote substituents on ethylene polymerization activity are also investigated. The change in potential of metal center induced by remote substituents, as evidenced by cyclic voltammetric measurements, influences the polymerization activity. UV–visible spectroscopic data have specified the important role of cocatalyst in the stabilization of nickel‐based active species. A tentative interpretation based on the formation of active and dormant species has been discussed. The resulting polyethylene was characterized by high molecular weight and relatively broad molecular weight distribution, and their microstructure varied with the structure of catalyst and cocatalyst. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nanocomposites were prepared by melt‐extruding mixtures of PET and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with some interaction with PET molecules. For the functionalization of MWNTs, benzyl isocyanate and phenyl isocyanate with different molecular flexibility were employed on the surface of the MWNTs via chemical modification, respectively. The reaction for functionalization of MWNTs was confirmed by FTIR and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. TEM observations indicated that both benzyl and phenyl isocyanate groups covered the surface of the MWNTs after functionalization. The PET nanocomposites containing isocyanate groups showed improved mechanical properties, including the tensile strength and tensile modulus, compared with those with pristine and acid‐treated nanotubes. These improvements were ascribed to π–π interactions between the aromatic rings of PET molecules and the isocyanate group in MWNTs. The functionalized MWNTs showed a better dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the matrix polymer and a different fractured cross‐section morphology in scanning electron microscope measurements relative to the pristine MWNTs. The crystallinity of the functionalized MWNT‐PET nanocomposites was significantly higher than that of the pristine and acid‐treated MWNTs. FTIR results indicated that the presence of carbon nanotubes induced trans‐conformation of PET chains, and trans conformation was particularly dominant in PET composites incorporating MWNT‐phenyl. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Capillary electrophoresis–electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (CE‐ESI/MS/MS) is a simple and highly sensitive method for quantifying seven urinary androgen glucuronides. The urine samples were diluted and filtered through a membrane filter, and the filtrate was injected into a CE‐MS/MS system without further sample preparation steps such as extraction and derivatization. The calibration ranges were 0.01–5 µg/mL for glucuronides of androsterone and 11β‐OHAn‐3G, and 5–500 ng/mL for glucuronides of 11‐ketoAn, DHEA, testosterone, epitestosterone and DHT. The linearity of the method was 0.992–0.998, and the limits‐of‐detection at a signal‐to‐noise ratio of 3 were 5–10 ng/mL. The coefficients of variation were in the range of 4.0–9.0% for intra‐day assay and 4.1–9.8% for inter‐day assay. The proposed method may be applicable to metabolic profiling in both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
