Diamagnetic and zeeman shifts of the ground state of arsenic donors in germanium

The technique of four-wave mixing spectroscopy has been utilized to study the magnetic field dependence of the valley-orbit splitting, 4△(B), of As donors in Ge at 1.8°K for ⊥ [111]. The upper ground level, ls(T₂), splits into two levels, one of “high” and the other of “low” diamagnetism. For donor concentration N_D ? 5 × 10¹⁵ cm^-3 we have measured the diamagnetism and g-factor for the high diamagnetism level (g ? 1.07) as a function of (< 7 T). Transitions originating from both spin-up and spin-down levels are observed, indicating that the spins are heated during the 100 n-sec laser pulse. Excellent agreement between measured and theoretical values of 4▽(B) is found (employing no adjustable parameters) if magnetic field compression of the wavefunction is taken into account.     

Selection rules for superstructures in thiourea,Rb2ZnBr4 and Rb2ZnCl4

This paper concerns the superstructures to which a modulated structure locks in. For thiourea, all observed rational values of $\text{γ (}\text{q}\text{= γ}\text{c}{}^1\text{)}$ belong to a certain type of fractions, namely - if we put $\text{γ =}\text{e}\text{v}$ - those with both u and v odd. In Rb₂ZnBr₄ and Rb₂ZnCl₄, published data point strongly to the existence of superstructures which so far had been regarded as incommensurate, but which turn out to yield values $\text{u}\text{v}$ also obeying the above parity conditions. Such conditions can be explained by a new hypothesis, viz. that the point group of the lock-in phase is identical to the three-dimensional part of the point group of the adjoining incommensurate phase.     

On the shear-thickening behaviour of dilute solutions of chain macromolecules

The shear thickening observed in laminar Poiseuille flow for dilute solutions of polystyrene of high molecular weight in decalin is studied as a function of concentration, molecular weight and shear rate. The experiments show the existence of four invariants, i.e. two critical Deborah numbers, a critical viscosity ratio, and a critical hydrodynamic dissipated energy, in terms of which a mechanism of this shear thickening can be proposed. It involves a permanent deformation of the macro molecules above a critical shear.

Spinor behaviour of a double quantum transition in three-level systems

4π rotational symmetry (spinor behaviour) of a two-level subsystem, connected by a double quantum transition is demonstrated in the case of a spin-1 nucleus (deuterium).     

Spin dynamics and four-photon mixing in InSb

The spin flip Raman interaction can be used to excite coherent spin precession in semiconductors. Resonant, four-photon mixing is shown to be equivalent to Raman scattering from this coherent state. Studies of the four-photon intensity give information concerning spin dynamics (T₁ and T₂) in n-InSb.
