On a generalization of the Evans Conjecture

The Evans Conjecture states that a partial Latin square of order n with at most n-1 entries can be completed. In this paper we generalize the Evans Conjecture by showing that a partial r-multi Latin square of order n with at most n-1 entries can be completed. Using this generalization, we confirm a case of a conjecture of Häggkvist.     

Perception of native and non-native affricate-fricative contrasts: cross-language tests on adults and infants

Previous studies have shown improved sensitivity to native-language contrasts and reduced sensitivity to non-native phonetic contrasts when comparing 6-8 and 10-12-month-old infants. This developmental pattern is interpreted as reflecting the onset of language-specific processing around the first birthday. However, generalization of this finding is limited by the fact that studies have yielded inconsistent results and that insufficient numbers of phonetic contrasts have been tested developmentally; this is especially true for native-language phonetic contrasts. Three experiments assessed the effects of language experience on affricate-fricative contrasts in a cross-language study of English and Mandarin adults and infants. Experiment 1 showed that English-speaking adults score lower than Mandarin-speaking adults on Mandarin alveolo-palatal affricate-fricative discrimination. Experiment 2 examined developmental change in the discrimination of this contrast in English- and Mandarin-leaning infants between 6 and 12 months of age. The results demonstrated that native-language performance significantly improved with age while performance on the non-native contrast decreased. Experiment 3 replicated the perceptual improvement for a native contrast: 6-8 and 10-12-month-old English-learning infants showed a performance increase at the older age. The results add to our knowledge of the developmental patterns of native and non-native phonetic perception.     

On the necessity of alternative approaches towards finite elastoplasticity

In order to simulate elastoplasticity within metal forming processes different approaches towards numerical implementation have been realized. Nevertheless, most of them or consider only the quasistatic case or use distinct time discretization schemes for the balance and the evolution equations. In the following, the effects of latter will be outlined on the basis of a numerical example exploiting a conventional ansatz towards finite elastoplasticity. This access should serve as a motivation for identifying why it is still important to investigate the implementation of elastoplastic phenomena beyond the well established methods. Application of a Viscoelastic Material Model in Electro-Mechanics

In this contribution, the numerical modeling of electro-viscoelastic material is considered. The electro-mechanical problem formulated in terms of a symmetrized stress tensor is extended to a viscoelastic material model. For the incorporation of the viscosity model, the logarithmic strain space setting is utilized which mimics the small strain setting. Therefore a rheological model for viscosity from the geometrically linear theory can be used. Numerical examples for a typical uniaxial tensile test show the capability of the method to demonstrate typical relaxation and creep behavior. (© 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
