Formation of Chiral β-Silyl-Vinyl Ethers

Chiral formates derived from propane-1,2-diol, 1,2- O -isopropylidene- f - D -xylo- and f - D -gluco-furanoses were subjected to treatment with cyclopentadienyl [tris(trimethylsilylmethyl)] titanium (IV). A mixture of the corresponding ( E )- and ( Z )- g -silylvinyl ethers were obtained with predominance of the former. It was found that in contrast to ( Z )-vinyl ethers, which give g -lactams with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate, the ( E )-vinyl ethers gave unstable cycloadducts which undergo rapid elimination reaction leading to ( E )- f , g -unsaturated amides.     

Sedimentation rate in the Sungai Linggi estuary using excess 210Pb and 137Cs

The purpose of this study was to estimate the sedimentation rate in the Sungai Linggi estuary using the constant initial concentration of unsupported or excess ²¹⁰Pb model and verified with ¹³⁷Cs method. Five sediment cores were collected on 25 January 2011 using gravity corer with the inner tube of 50 cm length and 7.5 cm diameter. The total ²¹⁰Pb activities in the sediment cores profile at all sampling stations were varied and upper than those obtained for supported ²¹⁰Pb i.e. ²²⁶Ra, indicated disequilibrium among ²¹⁰Pb and its grandparents in the ²³⁸U decay series. Meanwhile, the lower ¹³⁷Cs activities were observed at all sampling stations due to no significant sources of ¹³⁷Cs releases were transferred into Malaysian marine. The estimation of sedimentation rate indicated the agreement of ²¹⁰Pb and ¹³⁷Cs method with a general presence of deep mixing in the Sungai Linggi estuary. Therefore, the apparent sedimentation rates calculated from ²¹⁰Pb profiles generally reflect the true value with the range from 0.70 to 1.97 cmyr^?1. High sedimentation rate was observed at some sampling stations which are located in river channel, estuary and closer to mainland. This suggested that land-use development, agriculture activities, channelization etc. introduced a large amount of sediment loaded into those areas.     

Time-of-flight studies of emission of μt from frozen hydrogen films

In recent TRIUMF experiments, a μ^- beam is stopped in a solid hydrogen film with a small fraction of T₂. The Ramsauer-Townsend (RT) mechanism allows μt to escape into vacuum with a few eV of energy. To study the emission process, an imaging system was used to determine the position of muon decays. Experimental histograms are in good agreement with a Monte Carlo simulation. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

In a Quest for Selectivity Paired with Activity: A Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalyst Bearing an Unsymmetrical Phenanthrene-Based N-Heterocyclic Carbene

Robust, selective, and stable in the presence of ethylene, ruthenium olefin metathesis pre-catalyst, {[3-benzyl-1-(10-phenyl-9-phenanthryl)]-2-imidazolidinylidene}dichloro(o-isopropoxyphenylmethylene)ruthenium(II), Ru-3 , bearing an unsymetrical N-heterocyclic carbene (uNHC) ligand, has been synthesized. The initiation rate of Ru-3 was examined by ring-closing metathesis and cross-metathesis reactions with a broad spectrum of olefins, showing an unprecendented selectivity. It was also tested in industrially relevant ethenolysis reactions of olefinic substrates from renewable feedstock with very good yields and selectivities.     

Preparation, Structure, and Thermal Decomposition of Co(II) Complexeswith 2,3- and 2,5-Dichlorobenzoic Acid and Imidazole

Summary.  The reaction products of Co(II)-2,3- and -2,5-dichlorobenzoate with imidazole (1, 2; CoL ₂⋯2imdċ2H₂O, L=C₇H₃Cl₂O, imd=imidazole) were characterized by their spectroscopic and thermochemical properties. The compounds crystallize in the monoclonic system with space group = P2₁/c, a=13.848(3), b=12.841(3) ?, c= 7.064(2) ?, β=98.12 °, V=1243.5(4) ?³, Z=2 for 1 and space group =P2₁/n, a=13.293(3), b= 6.964(2), c=13.800(3) ?, β=108.92(3) °, V=1208.6(4) ?³, Z=2 for 2. The complexes lose their crystal water in one step at 333 K and subsequently decompose to CoO with intermediate formation of Co₃O₄. Received August 9, 1999. Accepted (revised) February 11, 2000     

Luminescence Properties of Tb-Doped Yttrium Disilicate Prepared by the Sol–Gel Method

A sol–gel method for the synthesis of nanosized powders of yttrium disilicate doped with Tb^{3 +} is presented. The influence of grain size and annealing temperature on the structure and luminescence properties of the materials obtained has been investigated. The preparation of glass-ceramic composite has been also described. The effect of incorporating the nanocrystals into sol–gel silica glasses on their physicochemical properties has been shown and discussed. A lack of influence of the annealing above 1300°C on the lifetimes measured for the nanocrystals embedded in the glass, as compared to the Y₂Si₂O₇:Tb^{3 +} powders, has been observed.     

Variational calculations of the lowest 2S and 2P states of the Li atom

The lowest variational upper bounds to the lowest ²S state of ?7.478044 au and to the lowest ²P state of ?7.410097 au of the lithium atom are obtained.
