Robust propagation direction of stresses in a minimal granular packing   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
By employing the adaptive network simulation method, we demonstrate that the ensemble-averaged stress caused by a local force for packings of frictionless rigid beads is concentrated along rays whose slope is consistent with unity: forces propagate along lines at 45 degrees to the horizontal or vertical. This slope is shown to be independent of polydispersity or the degree to which the system is sheared. Further confirmation of this result comes from fitting the components of the stress tensor to the null stress “constitutive equation”. The magnitude of the response is also shown to fall off with the -1/2 power of distance. We argue that our findings are a natural consequence of a system that preserves its volume under small perturbations. Received 30 April 2001 and Received in final form 16 August 2001  相似文献

Highly enantioselective intermolecular [5+2] cycloadditions of pyrylium ion intermediates with electron‐rich alkenes are promoted by a dual catalyst system composed of an achiral thiourea and a chiral primary aminothiourea. The observed enantioselectivity is highly dependent on the substitution pattern of the 5π component, and the basis for this effect is analyzed using experimental and computational evidence. The resultant 8‐oxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane derivatives possess a scaffold common in natural products and medicinally active compounds and are also versatile chiral building blocks for further manipulations. Several stereoselective complexity‐generating transformations of the 8‐oxabicyclooctane products are presented.  相似文献

The self-dual Yang—Mills equations in four dimensions are integrable, for any gauge group, via the twistor transform. Integrability of the Yang—Mills equations proper in four dimensions with a finite dimensional gauge group cannot reasonably be hoped for. However, longstanding questions about the large N limit of QCD suggest that a new form of integrability might conceivably emerge in the limit of an infinite dimensional gauge group.  相似文献

Using a novel differential magneto-optical imaging technique we investigate the phenomenon of vortex lattice melting in crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO). The images of melting reveal complex patterns in the formation and evolution of the vortex solid-liquid interface with varying field (H)/temperature (T). We believe that the complex melting patterns are due to a random distribution of material disorder/inhomogeneities across the sample, which create fluctuations in the local melting temperature or field value. To study the fluctuations in the local melting temperature/field, we have constructed maps of the melting landscape T m(H, r), viz., the melting temperature (T m) at a given location (r) in the sample at a given field (H). A study of these melting landscapes reveals an unexpected feature: the melting landscape is not fixed, but changes rather dramatically with varying field and temperature along the melting line. It is concluded that the changes in both the scale and shape of the landscape result from the competing contributions of different types of quenched disorder which have opposite effects on the local melting transition.  相似文献

This is a continuation of our earlier investigation (Gurtuet al 1974Phys. Lett. 50 B 391) on multiparticle production in proton-nucleus collisions based on an exposure of emulsion stack to 200 GeV/c beam at the NAL. It is found that the ratioR em = 〈n s〉/〈n ch〉, where 〈n ch〉 is the charged particle multiplicity in pp-collisions, increases slowly from about 1 at 10 GeV/c to 1·6 at 68 GeV/c and attains a constant value of 1·71 ± 0·04 in the region 200 to 8000 GeV/c. Furthermore,R em = 1·71 implies an effectiveA-dependence ofR A =A 0.18,i.e., a very weak dependence. Predictions ofR em on various models are discussed and compared with the emulsion data. Data seem to favour models of hadron-nucleon collisions in which production of particles takes place through adouble step mechanism,e.g., diffractive excitation, hydrodynamical and energy flux cascade as opposed to models which envisage instantaneous production.  相似文献

We study boundary conditions in ${\mathcal{N}}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory that preserve one-half the supersymmetry. The obvious Dirichlet boundary conditions can be modified to allow some of the scalar fields to have a “pole” at the boundary. The obvious Neumann boundary conditions can be modified by coupling to additional fields supported at the boundary. The obvious boundary conditions associated with orientifolds can also be generalized. In preparation for a separate study of how electric-magnetic duality acts on these boundary conditions, we explore moduli spaces of solutions of Nahm’s equations that appear in the presence of a boundary. Though our main interest is in boundary conditions that are Lorentz-invariant (to the extent possible in the presence of a boundary), we also explore non-Lorentz-invariant but half-BPS deformations of Neumann boundary conditions. We make preliminary comments on the action of electric-magnetic duality, deferring a more serious study to a later paper.  相似文献

Background

Targeted delivery of pharmaceutical agents into selected populations of CNS (Central Nervous System) neurons is an extremely compelling goal. Currently, systemic methods are generally used for delivery of pain medications, anti-virals for treatment of dermatomal infections, anti-spasmodics, and neuroprotectants. Systemic side effects or undesirable effects on parts of the CNS that are not involved in the pathology limit efficacy and limit clinical utility for many classes of pharmaceuticals. Axonal transport from the periphery offers a possible selective route, but there has been little progress towards design of agents that can accomplish targeted delivery via this intraneural route. To achieve this goal, we developed a tripartite molecular construction concept involving an axonal transport facilitator molecule, a polymer linker, and a large number of drug molecules conjugated to the linker, then sought to evaluate its neurobiology and pharmacological behavior.

Results

We developed chemical synthesis methodologies for assembling these tripartite complexes using a variety of axonal transport facilitators including nerve growth factor, wheat germ agglutinin, and synthetic facilitators derived from phage display work. Loading of up to 100 drug molecules per complex was achieved. Conjugation methods were used that allowed the drugs to be released in active form inside the cell body after transport. Intramuscular and intradermal injection proved effective for introducing pharmacologically effective doses into selected populations of CNS neurons. Pharmacological efficacy with gabapentin in a paw withdrawal latency model revealed a ten fold increase in half life and a 300 fold decrease in necessary dose relative to systemic administration for gabapentin when the drug was delivered by axonal transport using the tripartite vehicle.

Conclusion

Specific targeting of selected subpopulations of CNS neurons for drug delivery by axonal transport holds great promise. The data shown here provide a basic framework for the intraneural pharmacology of this tripartite complex. The pharmacologically efficacious drug delivery demonstrated here verify the fundamental feasibility of using axonal transport for targeted drug delivery.  相似文献

A new mathematical framework for the Wess-Zumino chiral effective action is described. It is shown that this action obeys an a priori quantization law, analogous to Dirac's quantization of magnetic change. It incorporates in current algebra both perturbative and non-perturbative anomalies.  相似文献

Two dimensional quantum Yang-Mills theory is studied from three points of view: (i) by standard physical methods; (ii) by relating it to the largek limit of three dimensional Chern-Simons theory and two dimensional conformal field theory; (iii) by relating its weak coupling limit to the theory of Reidemeister-Ray-Singer torsion. The results obtained from the three points of view agree and give formulas for the volumes of the moduli spaces of representations of fundamental groups of two dimensional surfaces.Research supported in part by NSF Grant PHY86-20266  相似文献
