We derive the optimal N-photon two-mode input state for obtaining an estimate straight phi of the phase difference between two arms of an interferometer. For an optimal measurement [B. C. Sanders and G. J. Milburn, Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 2944 (1995)], it yields a variance (Deltastraight phi)(2) approximately pi(2)/N2, compared to O(N-1) or O(N-1/2) for states considered by previous authors. Such a measurement cannot be realized by counting photons in the interferometer outputs. However, we introduce an adaptive measurement scheme that can be thus realized, and show that it yields a variance in straight phi very close to that from an optimal measurement.  相似文献

The pigment hemozoin is a natural by-product of the metabolism of hemoglobin by the parasites which cause malaria. Previously, hemozoin was demonstrated to have a very high nonlinear optical response enabling third harmonic generation (THG) imaging. In this study, we present a complete characterization of the nonlinear THG response of natural hemozoin in malaria-infected red blood cells, as well as in pure isostructural synthesized hematin anhydride, in order to determine optimal imaging parameters for detection. Our study demonstrates the wavelength range for optimal pulsed femtosecond laser excitation of THG from hemozoin crystals. In addition, we show the hemozoin crystal detection as a function of crystal size, incident laser power, and the emission response of the hemozoin crystals to different incident laser polarization states. Our systematic measurements of the nonlinear optical response from hemozoin establish detection limits, which are essential for the optimal design of malaria detection technologies that exploit the THG response of hemozoin.

Variable temperature X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques have been used to identify structural phase transitions in Cu-rich A(3)A'BO(6) phases. A transition from monoclinic to rhombohedral symmetry was observed by X-ray diffraction between 700 and 500 K in Sr(3)Cu(1-x)M(x)IrO(6) (M = Ni, Zn; 0 < or = x < or = 0.5). The temperature of the phase change decreased in a linear manner with Cu-content and was essentially independent of the nature of M. Ca(3.1)Cu(0.9)MnO(6) was shown to pass from a rhombohedral phase to a triclinic phase on cooling below 290 K; the structure of the triclinic phase was refined against neutron diffraction data collected at 2 K. Ca(3.1)Cu(0.9)RuO(6) undergoes a transition between a disordered rhombohedral phase and an ordered monoclinic phase when cooled below 623 K. Neutron diffraction has been used to determine the structure as a function of temperature in the range 523 < or =T/K < or = 723 and hence to determine an order parameter for the low temperature phase; the second-order transition is shown to be incomplete 100 K below the critical temperature.  相似文献

L-glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter, binds to both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. In certain parts of the brain the BBB contains two normally impermeable barriers: 1) cerebral endothelial barrier and 2) cerebral epithelial barrier. Human cerebral endothelial cells express NMDA receptors; however, to date, human cerebral epithelial cells (neuroepithelial cells) have not been shown to express NMDA receptor message or protein. In this study, human hypothalamic sections were examined for NMDA receptors (NMDAR) expression via immunohistochemistry and murine neuroepithelial cell line (V1) were examined for NMDAR via RT-PCR and Western analysis. We found that human cerebral epithelium express protein and cultured mouse neuroepithelial cells express both mRNA and protein for the NMDA receptor. These findings may have important consequences for neuroepithelial responses during excitotoxicity and in disease.  相似文献

The modal interpretation of quantum mechanics allows one to keep the standard classical definition of realism intact. That is, variables have a definite status for all time and a measurement only tells us which value it had. However, at present modal dynamics are only applicable to situations that are described in the orthodox theory by projective measures. In this paper we extend modal dynamics to include positive operator measures (POMs). That is, for example, rather than using a complete set of orthogonal projectors, we can use an overcomplete set of nonorthogonal projectors. We derive the conditions under which Bell's stochastic modal dynamics for projective measures reduce to deterministic dynamics, showing (incidentally) that Brown and Hiley's generalization of Bohmian mechanics [quant-ph/0005026, (2000)] cannot be thus derived. We then show how deterministic dynamics for positive operators can also be derived. As a simple case, we consider a Harmonic oscillator, and the overcomplete set of coherent state projectors (i.e., the Husimi POM). We show that the modal dynamics for this POM in the classical limit correspond to the classical dynamics, even for the nonclassical number state |n>. This is in contrast to the Bohmian dynamics, which for energy eigenstates, the dynamics are always non-classical.  相似文献

The reactions of ?-C3H3+ (propargylium cation) with acetylene and diacetylene have been modeled kinetically. Data were obtained from Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FTICR) experiments on these systems, which are themselves models for soot particle initiation. Acetylene forms an encounter complex with ?-C3H3+, but, in the absence of a third body collision, the complex decomposes to acetylene and c-C3H3+ (cyclopropenylium cation) at about 1/3 the rate it decomposes to acetylene and ?-C3H3+, in spite of the fact that c-C3H3+ is ca. 115 kJ/mol more stable than ?-C3H3+. The encounter complex is long enough lived, and energetic enough, to scramble deuterium in reactions between ?-C3H3+ and C2D2. These reactions have been successfully modeled, yielding a nearly statistical distribution of deuterium, and a rather large kinetic isotope effect. The more complex reactions of ?-C3H3+ with diacetylene have also been modeled.  相似文献

This paper is the second in a two-part series dealing with the configuration-specific analyses for molecular collision events of hard, spherical molecules at thermal equilibrium. The first paper analyzed a single-component system, and the reader is referred to it for the fundamental concepts. In this paper, the expressions for the configuration-specific collision frequencies and the average line-of-centers collision angles and speeds are derived for an ideal binary gas mixture. The analyses show that the average line-of-centers quantities are all dependent upon the ratio of the masses of the two components, but not upon molecular size. Of course, the configuration-specific collision frequencies do depend on molecular size. The expression for the overall binary collision frequency is a simple sum of the configuration-specific collision frequencies and is identical to the conventional expression.  相似文献
