Smectic membranes in motion: approaching the fast limits of x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

The dynamics of the layer-displacement fluctuations in smectic membranes have been studied by x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS). We report transitions from an oscillatory damping regime to simple exponential decay of the fluctuations, both as a function of membrane thickness and upon changing from specular to off-specular scattering. This behavior is in agreement with recent theories. Employing avalanche photodiode detectors and the uniform filling mode of the synchrotron storage ring, the fast limits of XPCS have been explored down to 50 ns.     

Polycapillary‐optics‐based micro‐XANES and micro‐EXAFS at a third‐generation bending‐magnet beamline

A focusing system based on a polycapillary half‐lens optic has been successfully tested for transmission and fluorescence µ‐X‐ray absorption spectroscopy at a third‐generation bending‐magnet beamline equipped with a non‐fixed‐exit Si(111) monochromator. The vertical positional variations of the X‐ray beam owing to the use of a non‐fixed‐exit monochromator were shown to pose only a limited problem by using the polycapillary optic. The expected height variation for an EXAFS scan around the Fe K‐edge is approximately 200 µm on the lens input side and this was reduced to ～1 µm for the focused beam. Beam sizes (FWHM) of 12–16 µm, transmission efficiencies of 25–45% and intensity gain factors, compared with the non‐focused beam, of about 2000 were obtained in the 7–14 keV energy range for an incoming beam of 0.5 × 2 mm (vertical × horizontal). As a practical application, an As K‐edge µ‐XANES study of cucumber root and hypocotyl was performed to determine the As oxidation state in the different plant parts and to identify a possible metabolic conversion by the plant.     

Threshold vibrational excitation of CO2 by slow electrons

Threshold structures, reminiscent of those seen in the polar hydrogen halides, have recently been observed in the cross sections for electron impact excitation of certain vibrational levels of the nonpolar CO2 molecule. These structures occur at energies outside the range where shape resonances dominate the dynamics. We propose a virtual state model that describes the multidimensional nuclear dynamics during the collision and explains quantitatively the selectivity observed in the excitation of the Fermi dyad, as well as the pattern of threshold peaks and oscillations seen in the upper levels of the higher polyads.     

Rod-climbing effect in Newtonian fluids

When a rotating rod is brought into a polymer melt or concentrated polymer solution, the meniscus climbs the rod. This spectacular rod climbing is due to the normal stresses present in the polymer fluid and is thus a purely non-Newtonian effect. A similar rod climbing of an interface between two fluids has therefore been taken as a signature that one of the fluids exhibits normal stress effects. We show here, however, that the effect can occur with simple Newtonian fluids: it occurs when a Taylor-Couette instability happens in the less viscous of the two liquids but not in the more viscous one.     

The rheological properties of hydrogenated castor oil crystals

The present study focuses on the rheological performance of a surfactant-rich aqueous suspension containing hydrogenated castor oil (HCO) crystals. HCO can be typically crystallized in five distinct shapes: spherically shaped, irregularly shaped, star-shaped (also called rosettes), short needles, and thick or thin fibers. The effect of the differences in shape on the rheological performance is studied, and the rheological properties are compared to the behavior of other triacylglycerol’s (TAG) suspensions. A suspension of TAG crystals usually behaves as a colloidal gel wherein a colloidal gel is defined as a network of flocs, with each floc being an aggregate of smaller subunits. All of these surfactant-rich aqueous suspensions of HCO crystals behaved according to a colloidal gel in the transient regime, independent of the studied crystal shapes, except the long thin fibers at a concentration above 0.1 wt% HCO transitioning from a heterogeneous fractal rod network to a homogeneous rod network, shifting from a colloidal gel to a glass.     

SuFEx-enabled,chemoselective synthesis of triflates,triflamides and triflimidates

Sulfur(vi) Fluoride Exchange (SuFEx) chemistry has emerged as a next-generation click reaction, designed to assemble functional molecules quickly and modularly. Here, we report the ex situ generation of trifluoromethanesulfonyl fluoride (CF₃SO₂F) gas in a two chamber system, and its use as a new SuFEx handle to efficiently synthesize triflates and triflamides. This broadly tolerated protocol lends itself to peptide modification or to telescoping into coupling reactions. Moreover, redesigning the S^VI–F connector with a S O → S NR replacement furnished the analogous triflimidoyl fluorides as SuFEx electrophiles, which were engaged in the synthesis of rarely reported triflimidate esters. Notably, experiments showed H₂O to be the key towards achieving chemoselective trifluoromethanesulfonation of phenols vs. amine groups, a phenomenon best explained—using ab initio metadynamics simulations—by a hydrogen bonded termolecular transition state for the CF₃SO₂F triflylation of amines.

Triflyl fluoride gas (CF₃SO₂F) and its aza analogues are reported as new SuFEx activators. These S^VI–F reagents react efficiently with a variety of nucleophiles, yet the presence of water grants complete chemoselectivity to phenols.     

Influence of benzo-bridging on the stability of 6aλ4-thia-1,2,5,6-tetraazapentalenic systems

Methylation of the phenylhydrazone derived from 8-oxo-8H-indeno[1,2-d]-1,2,3-thiadiazole 5 with Meerwein's reagent furnishes the two methylated products 7 and 8. Single crystal X-ray analyses of these compounds reveal no significant S…NPh interaction, thus excluding a thiapentalene structure.
