Although most of them are relatively small, stable isotope deltas of naturally occurring substances are robust and enable workers in anthropology, atmospheric sciences, biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, food and drug authentication, forensic science, geochemistry, geology, oceanography, and paleoclimatology to study a variety of topics. Two fundamental processes explain the stable isotope deltas measured in most terrestrial systems: isotopic fractionation and isotope mixing. Isotopic fractionation is the result of equilibrium or kinetic physicochemical processes that fractionate isotopes because of small differences in physical or chemical properties of molecular species having different isotopes. It is shown that the mixing of radioactive and stable isotope end members can be modelled to provide information on many natural processes, including (14)C abundances in the modern atmosphere and the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of the oceans during glacial and interglacial times. The calculation of mixing fractions using isotope balance equations with isotope deltas can be substantially in error when substances with high concentrations of heavy isotopes (e.g. (13)C, (2)H, and (18)O ) are mixed. In such cases, calculations using mole fractions are preferred as they produce accurate mixing fractions. Isotope deltas are dimensionless quantities. In the International System of Units (SI), these quantities have the unit 1 and the usual list of prefixes is not applicable. To overcome traditional limitations with expressing orders of magnitude differences in isotope deltas, we propose the term urey (symbol Ur), after Harold C. Urey, for the unit 1. In such a manner, an isotope delta value expressed traditionally as-25 per mil can be written as-25?mUr (or-2.5?cUr or-0.25?dUr; the use of any SI prefix is possible). Likewise, very small isotopic differences often expressed in per meg 'units' are easily included (e.g. either+0.015?‰ or+15 per meg can be written as+15?μUr.  相似文献

We investigate the response of molecular fluids to temperature gradients. Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics computer simulations we show that nonpolar diatomic fluids adopt a preferred orientation as a response to a temperature gradient. We find that the magnitude of this thermomolecular orientation effect is proportional to the strength of the temperature gradient and the degree of molecular anisotropy, as defined by the different size or mass of the molecular atomic sites. We show that the preferred orientation of the molecules follows the same trends observed in the Soret effect of binary mixtures. We argue this is a general effect that should be observed in a wide range of length scales.  相似文献

The development of current instabilities behind the front of a cylindrically expanding plasma has been investigated experimentally via proton probing techniques. A multitude of tubelike filamentary structures is observed to form behind the front of a plasma created by irradiating solid-density wire targets with a high-intensity (I ~ 10(19) W/cm(2)), picosecond-duration laser pulse. These filaments exhibit a remarkable degree of stability, persisting for several tens of picoseconds, and appear to be magnetized over a filament length corresponding to several filament radii. Particle-in-cell simulations indicate that their formation can be attributed to a Weibel instability driven by a thermal anisotropy of the electron population. We suggest that these results may have implications in astrophysical scenarios, particularly concerning the problem of the generation of strong, spatially extended and sustained magnetic fields in astrophysical jets.  相似文献

Six different bacterial haloalkane dehalogenases were recombinantly produced in Escherichia coli, purified, and used to catalyse the conversion of prochiral short-chain dihaloalkanes and a meso dihaloalkane, yielding enantioenriched haloalcohols. A two-reaction one-enzyme process was established in which the desymmetrisation of a dihaloalkane is followed by kinetic resolution of the chiral haloalcohol that is produced in the first step. In case of 1,3-dibromo-2-methylpropane and 1,3-dibromo-2-phenylpropane, an increase of the enantiomeric excess of the respective haloalcohol was observed in time, leading to ee values of >97%, with analytical yields of 24 and 52%, respectively. The results show that haloalkane dehalogenases can be used for the production of highly enantioenriched haloalcohols and that in some cases product enantiopurity can be improved by allowing a two-step one-enzyme tandem reaction.  相似文献

The present paper evaluates two unsteady transition modelling approaches: the prescribed unsteady intermittency method PUIM, developed at Cambridge University and the dynamic unsteady intermittency method developed at Ghent University. The methods are validated against experimental data for the N3-60 steam turbine stator profile for steady and for unsteady inlet flow conditions. The characteristic features of the test case are moderately high Reynolds number and high inlet turbulence intensity, which causes bypass transition. The tested models rely both on the intermittency parameter and are unsteady approaches. In the prescribed method, the time-dependent intermittency distribution is obtained from integral relations. In the dynamic method, the intermittency distribution follows from time-dependent differential equations. For unsteady computations, self-similar wake profiles are prescribed at the inlet of the computational domain. Joint validation of the prescribed and the dynamic unsteady intermittency models against experimental data shows that both methods are able to reproduce the global features of the periodical evolution of the boundary layer under the influence of a periodically impinging wake. The overall quality of the dynamic method is better than that of the prescribed method.  相似文献

Complex tree-like nanostructures with controlled morphology are becoming increasingly important for the development of nanoscale devices. The position of branches on III–V semiconductor nanotrees is determined by the distribution of Au seed particles. Here we report the dependence of the distribution of Au aerosol nanoparticles on nanowires on parameters including distance between wires, particle size, wire length, wire diameter, III–V material and particle charge. It was observed that different wire lengths and separation distances as well as different particle polarities have a significant effect on the resulting particle distribution while different wire diameters, particle diameters, materials and deposition voltages do not.  相似文献

It is well known that variable selection in multiple regression can be unstable and that the model uncertainty can be considerable. The model uncertainty can be quantified and explored by bootstrap resampling, see Sauerbrei et al. (Biom J 57:531–555, 2015). Here approaches are introduced that use the results of bootstrap replications of the variable selection process to obtain more detailed information about the data. Analyses will be based on dissimilarities between the results of the analyses of different bootstrap samples. Dissimilarities are computed between the vector of predictions, and between the sets of selected variables. The dissimilarities are used to map the models by multidimensional scaling, to cluster them, and to construct heatplots. Clusters can point to different interpretations of the data that could arise from different selections of variables supported by different bootstrap samples. A new measure of variable selection instability is also defined. The methodology can be applied to various regression models, estimators, and variable selection methods. It will be illustrated by three real data examples, using linear regression and a Cox proportional hazards model, and model selection by AIC and BIC.

I examine the potential of a pointlike particle carrying SU (N c) charge in a gauge theory with a dilaton. The potential depends on boundary conditions imposed on the dilaton: For a dilaton that vanishes at infinity the resulting potential is a regulatized Coulomb potential of the form (r+r ϕ)−1, withr ϕ, inversely proportional to the decay constant of the dilaton. Another natural constraint on the dialaton ϕ is independence of (1/g 2) exp(ϕ/fϕ) from the gauge couplingg. This requirement yields a confining potential proportional tor.  相似文献

In this paper, we give a formula for computing the number of different planat embeddings of any planar biconnected graph. The enumeration method used in deriving the formula readily gives rise to efficient algorithms for the ranking, unranking and random generation of embeddings of the given graph.  We consider the Couette flow between two plates. The lower plate is fixed and has periodically placed riblets of the characteristic size ɛ on it. In the limit ɛ → 0 we find the effective Couette-Navier flow as an O(ɛ 2 ) approximation for the effective mass flow and an O(ɛ 2 )L 1 -approximation for the velocity. In the effective solution the effect of roughness enters through the Navier slip condition with the matrix coefficient in front of the effective shear stress, calculated using a boundary layer problem. Furthermore, an O(ɛ 2 ) approximation for the tangential drag force is found. In all estimates explicit dependence on the kinematic viscosity ν, the velocity of the upper plate and the distance between the plates L 3 is kept. Also the uniqueness of the solution is expressed through a non-linear algebraic condition linking and L 3 . Then the result is applied to the viscous sub-layers around immersed bodies, strictly containing the surface riblets. It is found that for the riblets of the characteristic size ɛ, being of the order smaller or equal to , the approximation obtained for the tangential drag could be applied. We compare ɛ and for realistic data and our results lead to the conclusion that the riblets reduce significantly tangential drag, which may explain their presence on the skin of Nektons.
