Absorption and defocusing of electromagnetic radiation by a Schwarzschild black hole

A comparison of electromagnetic radiation absorbed by a black hole and that emitted at infinity is made for selected circular orbits of a charged particle in a Schwarzschild geometry. Radiation intensity and beaming processes for geodesic as well as ultra-relativistic unbound orbits are compared and contrasted with the special relativistic results of classical electrodynamics.     

Monotonicity of the free energy in the stochastic Heisenberg model

The specific free energy of the state at timet of the stochastic Heisenberg model is shown to be non-increasing witht, and to strictly decrease whenever this state is not a Gibbs state of the Hamiltonian. The initial state is assumed to be translation invariant and suitably smooth. For such states a convergence theorem is obtained.This paper represents the second part of the author's thesis. Synthesis and Characterization of Tris(tetraethylammonium) Pentacyanoperoxynitritocobaltate(III)

We report the first synthesis of a stable complex of peroxynitrite coordinated to a transition‐metal ion. Solid tris(tetraethylammonium) pentacyanosuperoxocobaltate(III) reacts with 1 equiv. of gaseous nitrogen monoxide to yield tris(tetraethylammonium) pentacyanoperoxynitritocobaltate(III) ( 1 ). This novel complex is characterized by a UV absorption band at 280 nm (ε≈2000 M ⁻¹ cm⁻¹) in H₂O. The IR spectrum of the sodium salt of the complex, 2 , shows vibration bands due to peroxynitrite. Nitrated and hydroxylated products are observed when the complex is dissolved in H₂O in the presence of phenol. The rate constant of hydrolysis is k=4.9×10⁻⁶ s⁻¹. The complex is less stable in MeCN and in MeOH and perhaps reacts with these solvents.     

Simulating the vapour–liquid equilibria of large cyclic alkanes

Self-adapting fixed endpoint configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations in the Gibbs ensemble were carried out to determine the vapour–liquid coexistence curves of cyclic alkanes from c-pentane to c-octadecane. In general, the critical temperatures and densities of the cyclic alkanes are substantially higher than those of their linear counterparts. Furthermore, the simulation data point to a maximum in the critical density for cyclic alkanes with about eight carbon atoms as also observed for the linear alkanes.

The main purpose of this paper is to extend and refine some work of Agler–McCarthy and Amar concerning the Corona problem for the polydisk and the unit ball in \mathbbCⁿ\mathbb{C}^n.
