An experimental study of dynamic tensile properties of glass fiber at low-temperatures

Tensile impact experiments of EC8.0−24×7 glass fiber bundles at different low temperaturesT(14°C, −40°C and −10°C) and strain rates ɛ were carried out, and complete stress-strain curves were obtained. Within the range of the experiment temperatures and strain rates, it is found that the initial modulusE, the ultimate strength σ_max and the unstable strain ɛ _b of the glass fiber bundles all increase with ɛ at an identicalT. At an identical ɛ, with the decrease ofT, E and σ_max increase; but ɛ _b increases when 10°C>T>−40°C and decreases when −40°C>T>−100°C. The strain-rate- and temperature-dependent bimodal Weibull statistical constitutive theory was adopted for the statistical analysis of the experimental results, and the Weibull parameters of single fiber were obtained. The results show that the bimodal Weibull distribution function is suitable to represent the strength distribution of the glass fiber at low temperature and different strain rates. The differences in the mechanical properties between EC8.0−24×7 and EC5.5−12 ×14 glass fiber bundles were also discussed. The solvable radical of Sylow factorizable groups

Let G be a finite group. A complete Sylow product of G is a product of Sylow subgroups of G, one for each prime divisor of |G|. We shall call G a Sylow factorizable group if it is equal to at least one of its complete Sylow products. We prove that if G is a Sylow factorizable group then the intersection of all complete Sylow products of G is equal to the solvable radical of G. We generalize the concepts and the result to Sylow products which involve an arbitrary subset of the prime divisors of |G|. Received: 26 January 2005     

Estimation effective de la perte de positivité dans la régularisation des courants

Let (X,ω) be a compact complex Hermitian manifold, and let T?γ be a d-closed (1,1) almost positive current on X. A variant of Demailly's regularization-of-currents theorem states that T is the weak limit of a sequence of (1,1)-currents T_m with analytic singularities of coefficient 1/m, lying in the same cohomology class as T, whose Lelong numbers converge to those of T, and with a loss of positivity decaying to zero. We prove that if the (1,1)-form γ is assumed to be closed and C^∞, the regularizing currents T_m can be chosen such that $\text{T}{}_{\mathrm{m}}\text{?γ?}\text{C}\text{m}$ for a constant C>0 independent of m. Photoluminescence characteristics of ZnTiO3: Bi nanocrystals

The photoluminescence properties of the Bi³⁺ in sol-gel derived ZnTiO₃ nanocrystals have been investigated. An ultra-violet emission at 360 nm and a visible emission band at 506 nm have been observed, originating from two kinds of emission centers. The former is ascribed to the ³P₁-¹S₀ transition of Bi³⁺ and the latter to the recombination of the electrons with the photo-generated holes trapped in the zinc vacancies. In all cases the latter contribution is predominant.     

Mathematical modeling of two-photon thermal fields in laser–solid interaction

In this paper, we have developed an analytical model to study the temperature distributions in IR optical materials heated by laser pulses. Our model takes into account the two-photon absorption (TPA). The calculations are based on a three-dimensional model of heat diffusion in solids using the integral transform method. We find out the rigorous analytical expression of the thermal field when one considers both one- and two-photon absorption. The model is valid for any laser–solid system whose interaction can be described by the generalized Beer–Lambert law. Specific results are presented for an application of the model to ZnSe sample. We find out that TPA can produce detectable temperature variation.
