Strain energies of some bridgehead olefins as calculated with the MM2 force field

The MM 2 force field has been used to calculate the strain energies of a representative series of bridgehead alkenes, and the results compared to similar previous calculations using the MM 1 force field. The new results roughly parallel the old ones, although the strain energy of a given compound is normally higher with MM 2 than MM 1. These differences are largely negated, however, when the OS (olefinic strain) value is considered.     

Micro-emulsion synthesis of monodisperse surface stabilized silicon nanocrystals

Silicon nanocrystals with a uniform size distribution were synthesized in inverse micelles using powerful hydride reducing agents. The silicon nanocrystals surfaces were then stabilized with 1-heptene to produce particles with strong blue photoluminescence.     

Equisetin biosynthesis in Fusarium heterosporum

An iterative polyketide synthase-peptide synthetase hybrid assembles the HIV-1 integrase inhibitory tetramic acid, equisetin, in the filamentous fungus Fusarium heterosporum.     

A small-angle x-ray scattering study of blends of isotactic and atactic polystyrene

Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) from blends of isotactic and atactic polystyrene has been studied. Results have been interpreted and compared using the Tsvankin, Vonk, and Hosemann techniques. The studies suggest that segregation of the atactic component occurs during crystallization within the growing spherulite of the isotactic component. However, since the interlamellar distance does not increase with atactic content, segregation is believed to occur with the formation of domains larger than interlamellar but smaller than spherulite size.     

New compactifications of ten and eleven dimensional supergravity on manifolds which are not direct products

Solutions of ten and eleven dimensional supergravity are presented for which the space-time metric is a product of an anti-de Sitter metric and a strictly positive scalar function of the internal coordinates.
