Abstract

The use of multidimensional fluorescence for detecting the effects of select pollutants on algal fluorescence and production is demonstrated. Multidimensional fluorescence is ideally suited to rapidly measure algal fluorescence generated by both chlorophyll a and accessory pigments, as well as any changes induced by pollutants. Laboratory cultured and natural algae samples from classes Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Cyanophyceae were exposed to substituted nitroaromatics and fluorescence spectra of the algae recorded. Notable spectroscopic changes and fluorescence quenching were observed. In addition, a novel method for rapidly preconcentrating dilute natural marine samples is described.  相似文献

A method for the preparation of N-trifluoroacetyl methyl esters of amino acids has been developed, permitting the separation and determination of 20 amino acids by temperature-programmed gas chromatography on two columns. The method was applied to the analysis of the amino acids in hydrolyzed maize and in hydrolyzed oats, where a direct comparison was made with the ion-exchange method.  相似文献

Earlier equilibrium studies have established the thermal dependence of the equilibrium between salt solution and a mixed bed of weakly basic and weakly acidic ion-exchange resins. High resin utilization can be achieved if the resin properties and equilibrium conditions are optimized; the equilibrium characteristics of polyacrylic acid and polyvinylbenzyldiethylamine resins are quite suited for the practical desalination of brackish waters.

However, the adsorption rates exhibited by normal-sized resin beads of this type are much too slow for satisfactory operation of the process because of the low concentration of protons available for transfer between the resins. It is shown that increasing the porosity of the resins improves amine resin kinetics 10-fold and carboxylic acid resin kinetics 6-fold. Nevertheless such improvements are still inadequate for practical purposes, and it is concluded that for satisfactory rates to be achieved systems having much shorter diffusion paths are necessary.

Two further approaches to the rate problem are discussed, both involving the synthesis of novel resin systems. A mixed bed of microbeads (10-20 p) reacts at acceptable rates but presents mechanical problems; the magnetic flocculation of finely divided magnetic resins is reported as one possible solution to this problem. Another avenue is the synthesis of normal-sized beads of the amphoteric and snake-cage variety. Resins of this type that exchange at suitable rates are described.  相似文献

An algorithm for finding maximal chordal subgraphs is developed that has worst-case time complexity of O(|E|Δ), where |E| is the number of edges in G and Δ is the maximum vertex degree in G. The study of maximal chordal subgraphs is motivated by their usefulness as computationally efficient structures with which to approximate a general graph. Two examples are given that illustrate potential applications of maximal chordal subgraphs. One provides an alternative formulation to the maximum independent set problem on a graph. The other involves a novel splitting scheme for solving large sparse systems of linear equations.  相似文献

A series of halogen-substituted cyclic enediynes were prepared with use of carbenoid coupling strategy. DFT analysis, initially used to identify synthesis candidates, was also employed to rationalize the propensity for cycloaromatization of the compounds. In all cases studied the halogen atom had a strongly retardative effect on the thermal Bergman cycloaromatization reaction. The isolation of the first C-9 monochloroenediyne is noteworthy, and may find application in prodrug design.  相似文献

We analyze analytically and numerically the dynamics of how a nematic elastomer-an anisotropic rubber-responds elastically and orientationally to an imposed strain. Because positional and orientational degrees of freedom are coupled, the response is not the simple exponential one might expect for a viscous system. Indeed, as a result of this nonlinear coupling, the different modes decay in two qualitatively different ways: with either two distinct or with the same exponential laws, depending, respectively, on whether there is or there is not complete reorientation of the molecular long axes. In addition, at the special values of the strain that form the boundaries between different equilibrium behaviors, relaxation is much slower, i.e., it follows a power law.  相似文献

In need for nonperturbing but spectroscopically unique environments for studies of lipid/lipid and lipid/protein interactions, we have investigated the thermodynamic properties of deuterated and undeuterated dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholines as well as the mixtures of both. The data have been collected using the highly sensitive differential scanning calorimetry. From the results of these measurements we conclude that mixtures of deuterated and undeuterated lipids behave ideally. The transition enthalpies, transition entropies and the cooperative unit are given as a function of the input ratio of the components and the phase diagram is constructed, showing that the deuterated lipids are suitable as nonperturbing probes.  相似文献

The infrared spectrum of HC13F3 is reported for the first time. Fundamental frequency shifts due to carbon-13 substitution have been measured and rotational analyses of several of the fundamental and combination bands are given. Coriolis x-y and Fermi perturbations are evident in several of the bands. Table VI summarizes the data obtained in this study.  相似文献

The detection of saccharides in biological media is of great current importance for the monitoring of disease states. We have previously reported that solutions of boronic acid-functionalized macrocycles form acyclic oligomeric materials in situ. The oligomers contain fluorescent xanthene moieties. Current efforts are aimed at modulating the spectroscopic responses of these materials for the analysis of specific sugars. We describe conditions whereby the xanthene boronic acids exhibit high colorimetric fructose selectivity. In contrast, at physiological levels selective glucose monitoring can be achieved via fluorescence. Additionally, we describe a method which exhibits promise for detecting both glucose and fructose at dual wavelengths in the UV-Vis region. Mechanistic rationale for each of these findings is presented.  相似文献
