The polarization of 3He elastically scattered from 27Al and 28Si at 21 MeV

The polarization of 21 MeV ³He elastically scattered from ²⁷Al and ²⁸Si has been measured in an angular range of θ_lab = 25°–55°. Differential cross-section data have been obtained out to angles of approximately 100°. The small values observed in the polarization distributions differ somewhat from optical-model predictions based on fits to the differential cross-section data and cannot be used to obtain significant information about the optical-model spin-orbit potential. It is concluded that statistically significant, non-zero ³He polarization measurements will not be possible using traditional double scattering techniques for ³He energies ≦ 27 MeV and targets of $\text{Z ≧ 13}$.     

A sharper tits alternative for 3-manifold groups

The following theorem is proven. LetM be a closed, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold such that rankH ₁(M, ℤ/pℤ)≥3 for some primep. Then either π₁(M) is virtually solvable or it contains a free group of rank 2.     

Smoothing evolution equations and boundary control theory

We establish a relationship between the local smoothing properties of evolution equations and boundary control theory. This relationship extends to hyperbolic equations, as well as equations of the Schrödinger type.

Spectroscopy of two coincident charged particles emitted following bound pion absorption in 12C, 59Co and 197Au

Energy spectra and angular distributions of two coincident charged particles emitted following stopped negative pion absorption in ¹²C, ⁵⁹Co and ¹⁹⁷Au were measured. Most of the data can be understood within the framework of a pair absorption model including final-state interactions. Ground-state transitions in the missing mass spectra of ⁴H and ⁴He deduced from the αα and tα spectra of ¹²C, respectively, show that reactions involving a large part of the nucleus also occur.
