Adsorption of carbon monoxide on Ni(110) above atmospheric pressure investigated with surface X-ray diffraction

The crystallographic structure of CO adsorbed on Ni(110) has been investigated with x-ray diffraction at ambient pressures of CO ranging from 2.3 to 10(-10) bars. At room temperature, the high pressure and vacuum structures are identical. Above room temperature ( approximately 130 degrees C), the high pressure of CO induces a restructuring of the Ni substrate that develops strained (111) microfacets.     

Solution-phase parallel synthesis of an isoflavone library for the discovery of novel antigiardial agents

Combinatorial chemistry has become a dramatically useful tool for the development of new medicinal agents. In the search to discover a novel and effective lead for the treatment of giardiasis, solution-phase synthesis of a library of isoflavone derivatives has been accomplished. Of the products screened, several compounds such as P(A1,B1) and P(A1,B11) exhibited potent antigiardial activity. The details of synthesis, in vitro antigiardial assay, and preliminary structure-activity relationships of these compounds are described.

Polarisation in the reaction πp → KΣ at 1.11 GeV

The polarisation of the recoil sigma in the reaction π⁺p → K⁺Σ⁺ has been measured at 12 production angles at a beam momentum of 1.11 GeV/c using counters and spark chambers. The new data are compared with existing phase shift solutions of πp → KΣ channels in the low energy region.

Threshold electron energy loss spectra for acetylene are presented and assignments suggested for the excitation processes occuring.     

Preparation and structure of tricarbonyl{bis(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl}-cyclohexadienylmanganese(I)

X-Ray diffraction analysis of tricarbonyl {bis(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl} cyclohexadienylmanganese(I) has provided the first detailed information about the bonding of an exo-substituent added by nucleophilic attack on a coordinated arene.     

Mass and lifetime limits on new long-lived particles in 300 GeV/c π− interactions

A sensitive search has been done for the production of new long-lived and penetrating particles by 300 GeV/c negative pions. No new state —decaying into at least two charged known particles —has been detected with mass above 1 GeV/c² and lifetime in the range 5·10^?11 s to 5·10^?7s. We give upper limits on production cross sections, and consequences on the existence of heavy “axion-like” particles, heavy neutrinos and supersymmetric particles. In particular, this experiment excludes the existence of light gluinos with lifetime in the range 5·10^?11 to 10^?8s: this closes the last “window of opportunity” for gluinos withM<2 GeV/c² and lifetime measurable in particle physics experiments.
