Experimental observation of strong photon localization in disordered photonic crystal waveguides

We demonstrate experimentally that structural perturbations imposed on highly dispersive photonic crystal-based waveguides give rise to spectral features that bear signatures of Anderson localization. Sharp resonances with effective Q's of over 30 000 are found in scattering spectra of disordered waveguides. The resonances are observed in a approximately 20-nm bandwidth centered at the cutoff of slowly guided Bloch modes. The origin of the spectral features can be explained by the interference of coherently scattered electromagnetic waves which results in the formation of a narrow impurity (or localization) band populated with spectrally distinct quasistates. Standard photon localization criteria are fulfilled in the localization band.     

Organic carbonates as stabilizing solvents for transition-metal nanoparticles

Biodegradable, non-toxic, "green" and inexpensive propylene carbonate (PC) solvent is shown to function as a stabilizing medium for the synthesis of weakly-coordinated transition-metal nanoparticles. Kinetically stable nanoparticles (M-NPs) with a small and uniform particle size (typically <5 ± 1 nm) have been reproducibly obtained by easy, rapid (3 min) and energy-saving 50 W microwave irradiation under an argon atmosphere from their metal-carbonyl precursors in PC. The M-NP/PC dispersions are stable for up to three weeks according to repeated TEM studies over this time period. The rhodium nanoparticle/PC dispersion is a highly active catalyst for the biphasic liquid-liquid hydrogenation of cyclohexene to cyclohexane with activities of up to and 1875 (mol product) (mol Rh)(-1) h(-1) and near quantitative conversion at 4 to 10 bar H(2) and 90 °C. From the PC dispersion the M-NPs can be coated with organic capping ligands such as 3-mercaptopropionic acid or trioctylphosphine oxide for further stabilization.     

Multi-dimensional HPLC/MS of the nucleolar proteome using HPLC-chip/MS

The proteome of the human nucleolus was investigated in a single analysis using off-line strong cation exchange chromatography and microfraction collection combined with HPLC-chip/MS. The analysis was conducted either as a 1-D workflow with HPLC-chip alone or as a 2-D workflow. Two hundred and six unique proteins were identified in the International Protein Index human database corresponding to 2024 unique tryptic peptides identified in the 2-D analysis. In contrast, only 34 proteins and 151 corresponding tryptic peptides were found by applying a 1-D separation strategy. This clearly indicated that the complexity of the samples required the combination of more than one orthogonal separation technique. Stringent database search criteria, including reversal of sequences and therefore better exclusion of false-positive identifications, were applied for reliable protein identification.
