A new experimental method for determining local airloads on rotor blades in forward flight

This paper presents a new approach for determining local airloads on helicopter rotor blade sections in forward flight. The method is based on the momentum equation in which all the terms are expressed by means of the velocity field measured by a laser Doppler velocimeter. The relative magnitude of the different terms involved in the momentum and Bernoulli equations is estimated and the results are encouraging.     

A hybrid shuffled complex evolution approach based on differential evolution for unconstrained optimization

Numerous optimization methods have been proposed for the solution of the unconstrained optimization problems, such as mathematical programming methods, stochastic global optimization approaches, and metaheuristics. In this paper, a metaheuristic algorithm called Modified Shuffled Complex Evolution (MSCE) is proposed, where an adaptation of the Downhill Simplex search strategy combined with the differential evolution method is proposed. The efficiency of the new method is analyzed in terms of the mean performance and computational time, in comparison with the genetic algorithm using floating-point representation (GAF) and the classical shuffled complex evolution (SCE-UA) algorithm using six benchmark optimization functions. Simulation results and the comparisons with SCE-UA and GAF indicate that the MSCE improves the search performance on the five benchmark functions of six tested functions.     

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: X-ray crystallographic studies for the binding of N-substituted benzenesulfonamides to human isoform II

N-substituted benzenesulfonamides, incorporating the N-amino-, N-hydroxy- and N-methoxy-moieties at the sulfonamide zinc binding group, have been investigated as CAIs by means of inhibition and structural studies, unraveling interesting aspects related to their inhibition mechanism.     

Extreme-value dependence: An application to exchange rate markets

Extreme value theory (EVT) focuses on modeling the tail behavior of a loss distribution using only extreme values rather than the whole data set. For a sample of 10 countries with dirty/free float regimes, we investigate whether paired currencies exhibit a pattern of asymptotic dependence. That is, whether an extremely large appreciation or depreciation in the nominal exchange rate of one country might transmit to another. In general, after controlling for volatility clustering and inertia in returns, we do not find evidence of extreme-value dependence between paired exchange rates. However, for asymptotic-independent paired returns, we find that tail dependency of exchange rates is stronger under large appreciations than under large depreciations.     

Extraction of cellulose and preparation of nanocellulose from sisal fibers

In this work a study on the feasibility of extracting cellulose from sisal fiber, by means of two different procedures was carried out. These processes included usual chemical procedures such as acid hydrolysis, chlorination, alkaline extraction, and bleaching. The final products were characterized by means of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). The extraction procedures that were used led to purified cellulose. Advantages and disadvantages of both procedures were also analyzed. Finally, nanocellulose was produced by the acid hydrolysis of obtained cellulose and characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).     

The unexpected reactivity of Zeise's anion in strong basic medium discloses new substitution patterns at the platinum centre

Zeise's anion in strongly basic hydroxylated solvents undergoes unprecedented nucleophilic addition of OR- (R = H, Me, Et) to the eta2-ethene giving trans-[PtCl2(eta1-C2H4OR)(OR)]2- which readily reacts with bidentate nitrogen donors N-N to give Cl- and OR- substitution and formation of [PtCl(CH2CH2OR)(N-N)]. Protonolysis of this stable organometallic species offers a versatile route to cationic [PtCl(eta2-C2H4)(N-N)]+ complexes.     

t-Spread strongly stable monomial ideals*

We introduce the concept of t-spread monomials and t-spread strongly stable ideals. These concepts are a natural generalization of strongly stable and squarefree strongly stable ideals. For the study of this class of ideals we use the t-fold stretching operator. It is shown that t-spread strongly stable ideals are componentwise linear. Their height, their graded Betti numbers and their generic initial ideal are determined. We also consider the toric rings whose generators come from t-spread principal Borel ideals.     

Study of the Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of the Biological Extracts of Psophocarpus tetragonolobus Using Two Extraction Methods

Psophocarpus tetragonolobus has long been used in traditional medicine and cuisine. In this study, Psophocarpus tetragonolobus extracts were isolated by maceration and ultrasound-assisted extraction and were evaluated for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. The obtained results show that both extracts (maceration and ultrasound) were rich in bioactive molecules and exerted substantial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The P. tetragonolobus extracts’ treatment in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages resulted in a significant downregulation of the expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-1β mRNA. In addition, the P. tetragonolobus extracts’ treatment attenuated inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression. Our observations indicate that there is no significant difference between the two studied extracts of P. tetragonolobus in terms of biological properties (specifically, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Regardless of the extraction method, P. tetragonolobus could be used for treating diseases related to oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions.
