A magnetic field tunable, broadband, low-loss, negative refractive index metamaterial is fabricated using yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and a periodic array of copper wires. The tunability is demonstrated from 18 to 23 GHz under an applied magnetic field with a figure of merit of 4.2 GHz/kOe. The tuning bandwidth is measured to be 5 GHz compared to 0.9 GHz for fixed field. We measure a minimum insertion loss of 4 dB (or 5.7 dB/cm) at 22.3 GHz. The measured negative refractive index bandwidth is 0.9 GHz compared to 0.5 GHz calculated by the transfer function matrix theory and 1 GHz calculated by finite element simulation.  相似文献

Shrinkage of unconstrained low-density polyethylene samples and the retractive stress of samples with ends fixed have been investigated as a function of the annealing time tA and temperature TA on material drawn at room temperature to draw ratios λ between 4 and 6. The shrinkage increases with tA and TA. The retractive stress on a sample annealed with ends fixed goes through a maximum as the sample is annealed and then drops to a limiting value which increases with TA as long as TA is at or below 80°C and rapidly decreases with higher TA. The drop from the maximum to the limiting retractive stress, slow at lower TA and rapid at higher TA, seems to be a consequence of rapid pulling of chain segments out of crystal block in which interfibrillar tie molecules are anchored. This process is facilitated by the high TA, which softens the crystal matrix. At constant end-to-end distance, the contour length of the tie molecules is irreversibly increased, and this causes a reduction in the contribution of the affected tie molecules to the overall retraction stress. Hence one finds a substantially higher retraction stress during first heating than during subsequent cooling and heating of the drawn sample.  相似文献

The combination of an electric field and a moderate turbulent flow is a promising technique for separating stable water–oil emulsions. Field-induced charges on the water droplets will cause adjacent droplets to align with the field and attract each other. The present work describes the forces that influence the kinematics of droplets falling in oil when exposed to an electric field. Mathematical models for these forces are presented and discussed with respect to a possible implementation in a multi-droplet Lagrangian framework. The droplet motion is mainly due to buoyancy, drag, film-drainage, and dipole–dipole forces. Attention is paid to internal circulations, non-ideal dipoles, and the effects of surface tension gradients.Experiments are performed to observe the behavior of a droplet falling onto a stationary one. The droplet is exposed to an electric field parallel to the direction of the droplet motion. The behavior of two falling water droplets exposed to an electric field perpendicular to the direction of their motion is also investigated until droplet coalescence. The droplet motion is recorded with a high-speed CMOS camera. The optical observations are compared with the results from numerical simulations where the governing equations for the droplet motion are solved by the RK45 (Runge Kutta) Fehlberg method with step-size control and low tolerances. Results, using different models, are compared and discussed in detail. A framework is otlined to describe the kinematics of both a falling rigid spherical particle and a fluid droplet under the influence of an electric field.  相似文献

We report on a microscopic Fabry-Perot interferometer whose cavity is a bubble trapped inside an optical fiber. The microcavity is formed by pressuring a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with large voids during fusion splicing with a conventional single-mode fiber. The technique allows achieving high repeatability and full control over the cavity size and shape. It was found that the size of the PCF voids contributes to control the cavity size independently of the pressure in the PCF. Our devices exhibit a record fringe contrast of 30?dB (visibility of 0.999) due to the ellipsoidal cavity whose surfaces compensate for the diffraction of the reflected beam. The strain sensitivity of the interferometers is higher when the cavities are ellipsoidal than when they are spherical.  相似文献

In this interdisciplinary approach, the dynamics of production and degradation of the quorum sensing signal 3-oxo-decanoylhomoserine lactone were studied for continuous cultures of Pseudomonas putida IsoF. The signal concentrations were quantified over time by use of monoclonal antibodies and ELISA. The results were verified by use of ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography. By use of a mathematical model we derived quantitative values for non-induced and induced signal production rate per cell. It is worthy of note that we found rather constant values for different rates of dilution in the chemostat, and the values seemed close to those reported for batch cultures. Thus, the quorum-sensing system in P. putida IsoF is remarkably stable under different environmental conditions. In all chemostat experiments, the signal concentration decreased strongly after a peak, because emerging lactonase activity led to a lower concentration under steady-state conditions. This lactonase activity probably is quorum sensing-regulated. The potential ecological implication of such unique regulation is discussed.  相似文献

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a highly malignant and metastatic pediatric cancer arising from skeletal muscle myogenic progenitors. Recent studies have shown an important role for AKT signaling in RMS progression. Aberrant activation of the PI3K/AKT axis is one of the most frequent events occurring in human cancers and serves to disconnect the control of cell growth, survival, and metabolism from exogenous growth stimuli. In the study reported here, a panel of five compounds targeting the catalytic subunits of the four class I PI3K isoforms (p110α, BYL-719 inhibitor; p110β, TGX-221 inhibitor; p110γ, CZC24832; p110δ, CAL-101 inhibitor) and the dual p110α/p110δ, AZD8835 inhibitor, were tested on the RMS cell lines RD, A204, and SJCRH30. Cytotoxicity, cell cycle, apoptosis, and the activation of downstream targets were analyzed. Of the individual inhibitors, BYL-719 demonstrated the most anti-tumorgenic properties. BYL-719 treatment resulted in G1/G0 phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. When combined with CAL-101, BYL-719 decreased cell viability and induced apoptosis in a synergistic manner, equaling or surpassing results achieved with AZD8835. In conclusion, our findings indicate that BYL-719, either alone or in combination with the p110δ inhibitor, CAL-101, could represent an efficient treatment for human rhabdomyosarcoma presenting with aberrant upregulation of the PI3K signaling pathway.  相似文献

We exploited the ability of photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) as an agent for the biofilm control. Two photocatalytic systems were investigated: a 3 g L(-1) suspension of TiO(2) nanopowder in demineralized water and glass slides coated with a TiO(2) thin film, achieved by sol-gel deposition. A running protocol for the photoactivation of TiO(2) was set up using the dye rhodamine B. The microorganisms studied were Pseudomonas stutzeri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and a Bacillus cereus-group as planktonic cells. P. aeruginosa biofilms were also studied at both the solid-liquid and the solid-air interface. The TiO(2) nanopowder produced 1-log reduction of Bacillus sp. planktonic cells in 24 h, 2-log reduction of P. stutzeri planktonic cells in 30 min and 1-log reduction of P. aeruginosa planktonic cells in 2 h compared with non-photo-activated TiO(2). TiO(2) thin film produced almost a complete eradication of P. aeruginosa planktonic cells (initial concentration 10(8) cells mL(-1)) in 24 h compared to a 3-log reduction caused by UV-A light alone. In contrast, neither the photocatalytic treatment with TiO(2) film nor that with TiO(2) nanopowder had any effect on P. aeruginosa biofilms at all the interfaces investigated. Possible explanations for these findings, and for the discrepancy between this work and literature data, are discussed.  相似文献
