Magnetization reversal by a single pulse of magnetic field or spin-polarized current

One of the important requirements for spintronic devices concerns an efficient magnetization reversal, which may eventually lead to ultra-fast non-volatile magnetic memory applications. In particular, it is necessary to achieve stable sub-nanosecond switching times and to reduce magnetization “ringing”, so that the reversal will proceed along the shortest ballistic path connecting the initial and the target magnetization states. This paper is dedicated to the numerical simulations of a mono-domain ferromagnetic particle, described by the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation. We study the general case of arbitrary orientation of the applied field/current pulses, constructing dynamic diagrams for the reversal time. We have found that even short 50 ps pulses, applied at a proper angle, will induce magnetization reversal with minimal ringing effects.     

Surface-plasmon-resonance-enhanced cavity ring-down detection

The cavity ring-down technique is used to probe the absolute optical response of the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of a gold nanoparticle distribution to adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) from the gas phase. Extended Mie theory for a coated sphere with a particle-size-dependent dielectric function is used to elucidate size-dispersion effects, the size-dependence of the SPR sensitivity to adsorption, and the kinetics of adsorption. An approximate Gaussian distribution of nanospheres with a mean diameter of 4.5 nm and a standard deviation of 1.1 nm, as determined by atomic force microscopy, is provided by the intrinsic granularity of an ultrathin, gold film, having a nominal thickness of approximately 0.18 nm. The cavity ring-down measurements employ a linear resonator with an intracavity flow cell, which is formed by a pair of ultrasmooth, fused-silica optical flats at Brewster's angle, where the Au film is present on a single flat. The total system intrinsic loss is dominated by the film extinction, while the angled flats alone contribute only approximately 5 x 10(-5)/flat to the total loss. Based on a relative ring-down time precision of 0.1% for ensembles averages of 25 laser shots from a pulsed optical parametric oscillator, the minimum detectable concentrations of PCE and TCE obtained by probing the SPR response are found to be 2 and 7 x 10(-8) mol/L, respectively, based on a 30 s integration time.     

Near-Wall Aggregation of Amyloidogenic Aβ 1-40 Peptide: Direct Observation by the FRET

The formation of amyloid fibrils is one of the variants of the self-organization of polypeptide chains. For the amyloid aggregation, the solution must be oversaturated with proteins. The interface of the liquid (solution) and solid (vessel walls) phases can trigger the adsorption of protein molecules, and the resulting oversaturation can initiate conformational transitions in them. In any laboratory experiment, we cannot exclude the presence of surfaces such as the walls of vessels, cuvettes, etc. However, in many works devoted to the study of amyloid formation, this feature is not considered. In our work, we investigated the behavior of the Aβ 1-40 peptide at the water–glass, water–quartz, and water–plastic interface. We carried out a series of simple experiments and showed that the Aβ 1-40 peptide is actively adsorbed on these surfaces, which leads to a significant interaction and aggregation of peptides. This means that the interface can be the place where the first amyloid nucleus appears. We suggest that this effect may also be one of the reasons for the difficulty of reproducing kinetic data when studying the aggregation of the amyloid of the Aβ 1-40 peptide and other amyloidogenic proteins

Statistical description of the system electrons on the liquid helium surface

System of electrons on the liquid helium surface is considered. General methods for obtaining free energy functional for the systems in mean field approximation are developed. These methods applied for treating systems with particles arranged in a lattice. Thus obtained functional of free energy is analyzed. The localization distance for electron and conditions for existing square or triangular lattices as well as phase transition between them are obtained.     

Bicyclophosphites of Terminal-Substituted Glycerols

Abstract

For the first time a systematic study was performed for the phosphorylation of 1,2,3-triols with total amides of phosphorous acid. The initial-matrix-structure dependence of phospholane-phospholane bicyclophosphites was found and investigated. The introducing of terminal substituents into a triol molecule was shown to essentially increase their stability.
