VC‐dimension on manifolds: a first approach

The Vapnik–Chervonenkis‐dimension is an index of the capacity of a learning machine. It has been computed in several cases, but always in a Euclidean context. This paper extends the notion to classifiers acting in the more general environment of a manifold. General properties are proved, and some examples of simple classifiers on elementary manifolds are given. A large part of the research is directed toward a still open problem on product manifolds. Electrochemical Kinetic Characterization of Redox Mediated Glucose Oxidase Reactions: A Simplified Approach

One of the main drawbacks affecting first‐generation electrochemical biosensors in the analysis of real matrices is the interference of electroactive species present in the sample under investigation. Several approaches have been attempted to overcome this problem in the past ten years but the best results were achieved by using mediated based electrochemical biosensors. Despite this, the kinetic of the redox mediators‐enzymatic proteins interaction has not been studied deeply enough. In this work we have developed a theoretical‐methodological approach for the characterization of the kinetic of interaction between redox enzymes and substrates and/or redox mediators. Particularly, the interaction of glucose oxidase (GOx) with several commercially available redox mediators has been studied by means of amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. The main kinetic parameters for different mediators were exploited and discussed with the aim of finding the best mediator for a glucose biosensor to be used on real samples.     

Synthetic UDP-furanoses as potent inhibitors of mycobacterial galactan biogenesis

UDP-galactofuranose (UDP-Galf) is a substrate for two types of enzymes, UDP-galactopyranose mutase and galactofuranosyltransferases, which are present in many pathogenic organisms but absent from mammals. In particular, these enzymes are involved in the biosynthesis of cell wall galactan, a polymer essential for the survival of the causative agent of tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We describe here the synthesis of derivatives of UDP-Galf modified at C-5 and C-6 using a chemoenzymatic route. In cell-free assays, these compounds prevented the formation of mycobacterial galactan, via the production of short "dead-end" intermediates resulting from their incorporation into the growing oligosaccharide chain. Modified UDP-furanoses thus constitute novel probes for the study of the two classes of enzymes involved in mycobacterial galactan assembly, and studies with these compounds may ultimately facilitate the future development of new therapeutic agents against tuberculosis.     

An accurate determination of the triple point temperature of pure 20Ne and 22Ne

The paper reports on new determinations at INRIM of the triple point temperature of pure neon isotopes ²⁰Ne and ²²Ne, obtained on samples sealed in cryogenic cells and measured with an uncertainty much lower than that of the previous determinations. The experimental technique is the same used at INRIM for recent studies on neon of natural-isotopic composition, showing an expanded uncertainty of ≈30 μK for a single cell and ≈50 μK for the comparison of sample pairs. The determinations were mainly intended to obtain a more accurate value of the temperature difference for the two pure isotopes, found to be 0.14660 K with an expanded uncertainty of 0.00007 K. The temperature values were found to be 24.5422 K for ²⁰Ne and 24.6888 K for ²²Ne on ITS-90, but each with a larger expanded uncertainty, 0.00032 K. This is mainly caused, contrarily to the difference, by each of these values being affected by the present ambiguity of the ITS-90 definition. This definition refers to neon generically to ‘natural’ composition, while its uncorrected variability heavily affects the uncertainty of the thermometer calibrations. These results for pure isotopes are compared with those recently obtained at INRIM on samples of commercial neon of natural composition and with literature data. The problems involved in the correction for the residual content of isotopic impurities and for chemical impurities are discussed.     

On isomorphisms of some Köthe function <Emphasis Type="Italic">F</Emphasis>-spaces

We prove that if Köthe F-spaces X and Y on finite atomless measure spaces (Ω _X ; Σ _X , µ _X ) and (Ω _Y ; Σ _Y ; µ _Y ), respectively, with absolute continuous norms are isomorphic and have the property

(for µ = µ _X and µ = µ _Y , respectively) then the measure spaces (Ω _X ; Σ _X ; µ _X ) and (Ω _Y ; Σ _Y ; µ _Y ) are isomorphic, up to some positive multiples. This theorem extends a result of A. Plichko and M. Popov concerning isomorphic classification of L _p (µ)-spaces for 0 < p < 1. We also provide a new class of F-spaces having no nonzero separable quotient space.

A new technique for fluid velocimetry based on near field scattering

We show that the time evolution of near-field scattering speckles, originated by a fluid suspension of particles, provides information about the velocity field in the fluid. This information can be extracted from a statistical analysis of speckle fields taken at different times, either by measuring their cross-correlation function or by recovering the power spectrum corresponding to the difference between the two speckle fields. Experimental data are in accordance to the expected behaviors. The results are independent of the scatterer's size, allowing one to exploit the technique also with sub-wavelength tracking particles.
