Magneto-convection in an anisotropic porous layer with Soret effect

Thermal instability in an electrically conducting two component Boussinesq fluid-saturated-porous medium has been investigated, in the presence of Soret coefficient. The porous medium is confined between two horizontal surfaces, and subjected to a constant vertical magnetic field. Flow in the porous medium is characterized by generalized Darcy model, which includes the time derivative term. Performing linear and non-linear stability analysis, the effect of magnetic field on the stability of flow through porous medium has been investigated. The normal mode method is used in linear stability analysis, while a weak non-linear analysis based on a minimal representation of double Fourier series method is used in non-linear analysis. The critical Rayleigh number, wave number for stationary and oscillatory modes, and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory. Effects of various parameters on stationary, oscillatory and finite amplitude convection, rate of heat and mass transfer have been obtained analytically and presented graphically.     

A facile and highly diastereoselective synthesis of carbocyclic spiro-pyrazolones via DABCO catalyzed Michael-Michael domino reaction

An efficient domino Michael-Michael reaction of ω- and δ-nitro α,β-unsaturated esters with alkylidenepyrazolones has been accomplished using DABCO as the organocatalyst under mild reaction conditions. Under the present organocatalytic method, a wide range of carbocyclic spiro-pyrazolones with three tertiary stereogenic centers and a quaternary stereocenter has been prepared in high yields and excellent diastereoselectivities. An ester and nitro groups present in the spiro-pyrazolones have been utilized for further structural transformations.     

Characterization of the photochromic pigments in red fluorescent proteins purified from the gut juice of the silkworm Bombyx mori L

Multiple forms of red fluorescent proteins (RFPs) were observed in the gut juice of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. It is to be noted that only one RFP band is reported in the literature so far. However, we report here three electrophoretically separated RFPs (A, B and C) found to be heterogeneous with respect to their components, namely the protein part and the fluorescent tetrapyrrole pigment moiety. Of the three RFPs, band C was found to be a glycoprotein. The absorption extinction coefficients and fluorescence quantum yields of the three RFPs were estimated. Further, this is the first communication demonstrating the presence of three different chlorophyll derivatives associated with the three different RFPs. The pigments were analyzed by thin layer chromatography followed by their elution to characterize the pigments by spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric methods. Spectral characteristics have led to the identification of monovinyl chlorophyllide a, divinyl protochlorophyllide a and monovinyl pheophytin a as being associated with RFP bands A, B and C, respectively. These three purified RFPs can serve as the source of the three pigments as the standards.     

Diazo reductive: a new approach to the synthesis of novel “upper rim” functionalized resorcin[4]arene Schiff-bases

The tetraaminoresorcin[4]arene was synthesized, which otherwise could not be easily synthesized by conventional method, by first introducing the azo group at the upper rim, followed by its reduction with Na₂S₂O₄. Tetraaminoresorcin[4]arene was then condensed with different aromatic aldehydes in ethanol at reflux temperature to obtain nine novel “upper rim” functionalized resorcin[4]arene Schiff-bases. All the nine Schiff-bases were characterized by m.p., elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR and Mass spectral data.     

Design,Synthesis, and Biomedical Applications of Glycotripods for Targeting Trimeric Lectins

In the last decades, various efforts have been made to synthesize optimal glycotripods for targeting trimeric glycoproteins like asialoglycoprotein receptor, hemagglutinin, and langerin. All these trimeric glycoproteins have sugar binding pockets which are highly selective for a particular carbohydrate ligand. Optimized glycotripods are high affinity binders and have been used for delivering drugs or even applied as drug candidates. The selection of the tripodal base scaffold together with the length and flexibility of the linker between the scaffold and sugar residue, as important design parameters are discussed in this review.     

Pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines. A combined multinuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C, 15N, 19F) and DFT approach to their structural assignment

Multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy together with GIAO-DFT calculations allowed establishment of the structure of the products obtained by condensation of 3(5)-amino-4-phenyl-1H-pyrazole and beta-dicarbonyl compounds bearing a trifluoromethyl group. They are 3-phenyl-5-(R)-7-trifluoromethylpyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines.     

Viscosity and thermodynamic properties of QGP in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the viscosity and thermodynamic properties of QGP at RHIC by employing the recently extracted equilibrium distribution functions from two hot QCD equations of state of O(g ⁵) and O(g ⁶ln (1/g)), respectively. After obtaining the temperature dependence of the energy density and the entropy density, we focus our attention on the determination of the shear viscosity for a rapidly expanding interacting plasma, as a function of temperature. We find that the interactions significantly decrease the shear viscosity. They decrease the viscosity to entropy density ratio, as well.
