Stability and convergence of the spectral Lagrange-Galerkin method for mixed periodic/non-periodic convection-dominated diffusion problems

We present a convergence analysis of the spectral Lagrange-Galerkinmethod for mixed periodic/non-periodic convection-diffusionproblems. The scheme is unconditionally stable, independentof the diffusion coefficient, even in the case when numericalquadrature is used. The theoretical predictions are illustratedby a series of numerical experiments. For the periodic case,our results present a significant improvement on those givenby Süli & Ware (1991) SIAM J. Numer.Anal.28, 423-445).     

Synthesis and nonlinear optical properties of side chain liquid crystalline polymers containing azobenzene push–pull chromophores

Azobenzene monomeric precursors bearing piperazine as donor moiety with different withdrawing groups and derived side chain polymethacrylates have been prepared and characterized. Monomers having terminal cyano or nitro groups, and the corresponding polymers, exhibited smectic A phases. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of every monomer and thin films of the cyano polymer ( pol‐PZ‐CN ) have been also studied. UV‐vis spectroscopy revealed out‐of‐plane orientation in the as prepared films, as confirmed by waveguide refractive index measurements. Moreover, absorption spectra indicated the presence of azo aggregates in these films. The initial molecular arrangement has been modified by applying thermal annealing within the mesophase range and UV‐blue irradiation. Although thermal annealing resulted in a significant amplification of the out‐of‐plane optical anisotropy due to thermotropic self‐organization of side chain azo moieties, irradiation with 440 nm light induced some disruption of aggregates. The nonlinear optical response of Corona poled films has been studied by second harmonic generation measurements, and the influence of the molecular arrangement on the nonlinear d_ij coefficients has been analyzed. The more efficient poling corresponded to preirradiated films. In any case, a noticeable degree of polar order (70% of the initial d₃₃ value) remained for several months after the poling in films kept at RT. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A priori estimates of the solution for the Dirichlet problem

We study the Dirichlet problem defined by u = f in and u =g in when is the half-space or the unitary rectangle, obtainingan a priori estimate of the solution. Furthermore, in both casesa concrete numerical estimation is arrived at. First we getthe a priori estimate in the case of the half-space. The problemis resolved for the rectangle by initially translating it intothe half-space and using the results we had obtained for it,so that the problem can then be reduced back to the rectangle.Because of this we first establish an extension of the Sobolevspace of second order in the rectangle to the one defined inthe half-space.     

Tetrathiafulvalene derivatives as NLO-phores: synthesis, electrochemistry, Raman spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, and NLO properties of novel TTF-derived donor-pi-acceptor dyads.

Novel pi-conjugated donor-acceptor chromophores, based on the strong electron-donating tetrathiafulvalene moiety and different electron-withdrawing acceptors, exhibit large second-order optical nonlinearities. The effect of increasing the length of the polyenic spacer and the influence of the nature of the acceptor moiety on the NLO properties have been studied by using the electric field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH) technique as well as by semiempirical and ab initio theoretical calculations. A charge-transfer band has been observed in the absorption spectra of these D-pi-A compounds that undergoes an hypsochromic shift when increasing the number of vinylenic spacer units connecting both donor and acceptor moieties. The degree of the intramolecular charge transfer from the donor to the acceptor has also been analyzed by means of Raman spectroscopy.     

Tests of significance using selected sample quantiles

Large sample tests of significance for the location parameter, the scale parameter, and quantiles for a location-scale family of distributions based on a few optimally chosen sample quantiles are considered.     

Effects of Testosterone Replacement on a Male Professional Singer

Testosterone has been known to play an important role in the development of the postpubertal male voice for many centuries. In fact, the prevention of pubertal development of the voice by castrating young male singers was a well-known practice, especially in Italy beginning in the sixteenth century. The “castrati” were well known for their clear, high-pitched voices. Because of the resulting small larynx and vocal folds, castrati apparently produced a distinctive resonance as well as the high pitch, which cannot be matched even by the counter tenors of today. Busy voice labs occasionally see males with sex hormone deficiencies secondary to chromosomal or gonadal problems. This is a presentation of an unusual patient who was a trained tenor singer and was found to have hypogonadism on a premarital health examination. Administration of replacement testosterone resulted in significant vocal register and voice quality changes.     

Trace element analysis of whole blood and urine samples of diabetic patients

A number of samples of whole blood, and urine from diabetic and non-diabetic persons have been analyzed for their trace elemental contents using the proton-induced X-ray emission. The elemental contents of the diabetic and non-diabetic samples are compared.     

Conformations of allylic fluorides and stereoselectivities of their diels-alder cycloadditions

The preparations of new allylic fluorides from the corresponding alcohols are reported. Conformational analysis is achieved by comparison of experimental NMR measurements with theoretical (B3LYP) calculations of relative energies of conformers and J(H,H) and J(H,F) coupling constants. The Diels-Alder reactions of allylic fluorides are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The stereoselectivities of the reactions were determined by NMR analysis and, in one case, by X-ray crystallography. Theoretical predictions of stereoselectivity based upon transition state modeling provided good agreement with experiment. Theoretical models for allylic fluorides and transition state conformations are reported.
