Conjugate additions of sulfur-stabilized anions to unsaturated lactams. Synthesis of polyfunctionalized benzo[a]quinolizinone systems

Conjugate addition reactions of sulfur-stabilized nucleophiles to the delta-lactam unit of tetrahydrobenzo[a]benzoquinolizines have been studied. The stereochemical outcome of the conjugate addition reaction depends on the nature of the substituent at the angular position, thus 2,11b-cis or 2,11b-trans diastereomers could be obtained selectively. The tandem conjugate addition-alkylation also takes place in good yields and with high diastereoselectivity. The polyfunctionalized hexahydrobenzo[a]quinolizinone systems obtained could be further elaborated toward emetine-like structures.     

GC-MS Study of Mono- and Bishaloethylphosphonates Related to Schedule 2.B.04 of the Chemical Weapons Convention: The Discovery of a New Intramolecular Halogen Transfer

A new class of compounds, mono- and bis-haloethylphosphonates (HAPs and bisHAPs, respectively), listed in Schedule 2.B.04 of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), has been synthesized and studied by GC-MS with two aims. First, to improve the identification of this type of chemicals by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, (OPCW). Second, to study the synergistic effect of halogen and silicon atoms in molecules undergoing mass spectrometry. Fragmentation patterns of trimethylsilyl derivatives of HAPs were found to depend on the nature of the halogen atom; this was in agreement with DFT-calculations. The data suggest that a novel intramolecular halogen transfer takes place during the fragmentation process.

Multiplexed immunoassay to detect anabolic androgenic steroids in human serum

A multianalyte enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been developed for the simultaneous detection of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) in human serum. The multiplexed method was developed according to a planar strategy in which the analytes are identified by their location in the microtiter plate. In the immunochemical procedure established here, human serum samples are mixed with a cocktail of antibodies and added to the distinct sections of a microplate biofunctionalized with different haptenized biomolecules. The cocktail of antibodies consists of a mixture of polyclonal antibodies raised against stanozolol (ST), boldenone (B), and tetrahydrogestrinone (THG). The whole immunochemical analytical procedure takes around 2 h including sample preparation, and many samples can be processed simultaneously to screen for the presence of the three AAS in a single run. Using this ELISA, ST, B, and THG can be detected and quantified individually. When used as a screening method, due to the cross-reactivity profiles of the immunoreagents used, the presence of up to 11 AAS can be detected simultaneously. The detectabilities achieved by this method in human serum are below the MRPLs (minimum required performance limits) proposed by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and reference laboratories of the European Community.     

Monitoring of chicken meat freshness by means of a colorimetric sensor array

A new optoelectronic nose to monitor chicken meat ageing has been developed. It is based on 16 pigments prepared by the incorporation of different dyes (pH indicators, Lewis acids, hydrogen-bonding derivatives, selective probes and natural dyes) into inorganic materials (UVM-7, silica and alumina). The colour changes of the sensor array were characteristic of chicken ageing in a modified packaging atmosphere (30% CO(2)-70% N(2)). The chromogenic array data were processed with qualitative (PCA) and quantitative (PLS) tools. The PCA statistical analysis showed a high degree of dispersion, with nine dimensions required to explain 95% of variance. Despite this high dimensionality, a tridimensional representation of the three principal components was able to differentiate ageing with 2-day intervals. Moreover, the PLS statistical analysis allows the creation of a model to correlate the chromogenic data with chicken meat ageing. The model offers a PLS prediction model for ageing with values of 0.9937, 0.0389 and 0.994 for the slope, the intercept and the regression coefficient, respectively, and is in agreement with the perfect fit between the predicted and measured values observed. The results suggest the feasibility of this system to help develop optoelectronic noses that monitor food freshness.     

Surface selectivities in wet chemically modified PVC films. Influence of reaction conditions

Wet chemical modification reactions of PVC films in solvent/nonsolvent mixtures were performed. Three thiol compounds of different size and reactivity were used varying the solvent quality, temperature, and reaction times. The evolution of the concentration gradients within the films was studied using confocal Raman spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Surface selectivities were calculated and discussed in terms of the different relative reaction rate constants.     

Parham-type cycliacylation with Weinreb amides. Application to the synthesis of fused indolizinone systems

[reaction: see text] Weinreb amides behave as efficient internal electrophiles in Parham-type cycliacylation reactions. Thus, aryl- and heteroaryllithiums generated by lithium-halogen exchange undergo intramolecular cyclization to give fused indolizinone systems as pyrrolo[1,2-b]isoquinolines, thieno[2,3-f]indolizinones, and pyrrolo[1,2-b]acridinones in high yields.     

Langmuir monolayer characteristics of a perfluoroaryl surfactant: 10-Perfluorobenzyl-decan-1-ol (PBD)

A surfactant containing the perfluorobenzyl moiety attached at the 10 position of decanol (10-perfluorobenzyldecan-1-ol, PBD) was synthesized and employed for Langmuir monolayer characterization, using surface pressure (π) and electric surface potential (ΔV)-mean molecular area (A) isotherms. Both static and dynamic stability experiments demonstrate that the monolayers formed by PBD are of satisfactory stability. Characteristic dendritic structures were observed with Brewster Angle Microscope (BAM) upon the whole compression up to the vicinity of collapse, where 3D crystallites appeared. The monolayer thickness is found to be comparable to the PBD molecule length. It occurs that ΔV has negative value even at large molecular areas, and decreases gradually along the compression, reaching a minimum of ca. −500 mV. Using the Helmholtz model, the apparent dipole moment was calculated upon film compression. The measurements were complemented with semi-empirical calculations involving molecular geometry optimization and dipole moment estimation.     

DFT study of the EPR spectral pattern of propagating methacrylic radicals

The EPR spectral pattern observed in the bulk polymerization of methacrylic monomers was theoretically investigated by DFT methodology. The conformational analysis of the propagating radical by the rotation around the C–C_β bond, was performed using the B3LYP/6-31G^* computational scheme. To obtain accurate values of the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants (hfccs) a higher level protocol, B3LYP/TZVP//B3LYP/6-31G^*, was applied. The experimental 13-line spectrum registered at the first stage of the polymerization was assumed to correspond to a free rotating radical in a fluid medium and it was simulated just considering the most stable conformation. The 9-line spectrum registered at high conversions was interpreted in terms of highly hindered rotational conformers frozen in the very viscous medium. This spectrum was well reproduced by a model which considers the sum of the individual spectra of the conformations spread around the most probable. Each of these contributing spectra was obtained on the basis of the computed hfccs for the considered conformations and weighted by his relative Boltzmann population according to the DFT analysis. Besides, the calculated hfccs showed an excellent agreement with those predicted by the Heller–McConnell relationship, which confirms the coherence of the DFT methodology for this kind of calculations.
