Application of oxetane ring opening toward stereoselective synthesis of zincophorin fragment

A stereoselective synthesis of the C1–C11 fragment of zincophorin was achieved by using an intramolecular oxetane ring opening reaction as the key step. The oxetane moiety was synthesized by employing a desymmetrization protocol developed at our group and a non-Evans syn aldol as the key steps toward the synthesis.     

An investigation of the properties of poly(dimethylsiloxane)-bioinspired silica hybrids

Elastomers typically require the incorporation of reinforcing fillers in order to improve their mechanical properties. For commercial silicone systems silica and titania are typically used as fillers. Fumed and precipitated silica are made on an industrial scale for many applications; however, we have shown recently that biological and synthetic macromolecules can generate new silica structures using a bioinspired route. Herein we have incorporated bioinspired silica fillers into poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomers and investigated their mechanical, morphological and thermal properties as a function of filler loading. The equilibrium stress-strain characteristics of the PDMS-bioinspired silica hybrids were determined as a function of bioinspired filler loading and the Mooney-Rivlin constants (2C₁ and 2C₂) were calculated. The thermal characteristics, in particular glass transition temperatures (T_g) and melting points (T_m), of the PDMS-bioinspired silica hybrids were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability of these hybrid materials were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphology of the samples was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the filler dispersion was characterized using ultra small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Although spherical silica particles were used here, we have demonstrated elsewhere that this bioinspired synthetic route also enables highly asymmetric silica structures to be prepared such as fibres and sheets. This methodology therefore offers the interesting possibility of preparing new hybrid systems where the properties are highly anisotropic.     

Shape evolution in odd-A 137 Pm

The odd mass nucleus ¹³⁷Pm has been studied to high spins through the ¹⁰⁹Ag(³²S, 2p2n)¹³⁷Pm reaction at an incident beam energy of 150 MeV. The de-exciting ??-rays were detected using an array of 18 Compton suppressed clover detectors. The level scheme of ¹³⁷Pm has been extended up to $J^\pi = \tfrac{{43}} {2}^ -$ and excitation energy of E _x ? 6 MeV with the observation of 42 new gamma transitions. The linear polarization (IPDCO) measurements for the ??-ray transitions have been done for the first time. The spin and parity assignments for most of the reported levels have been made using these results and the coincidence angular anisotropy (R_DCO) measurements. The nuclear shape evolution is discussed in the light of Total Routhian Surface (TRS) and Cranked Shell Model (CSM) calculations.     

Direct synthesis of esters and amides from unprotected hydroxyaromatic and -aliphatic carboxylic acids

A facile method for the activation of hydroxy-substituted carboxylic acids using benzotriazole chemistry without prior protection of the hydroxy substituents is presented. The N-acylbenzotriazole intermediates 2a-g, 6a-d, and 9a-c have been used for high-yielding synthesis of both aliphatic (3a-l) and aromatic (7a-h, 10a-f) hydroxy carboxamides. High yields of aromatic hydroxy esters 12a-h and 13a-i were obtained using either neat alcohols in neutral microwave conditions or nucleophilic alkoxides and the intermediate N-(arylacyl)benzotriazoles. Moderate yields were obtained in the case of aliphatic hydroxy esters 11a,b and thiolesters 11e-g from the intermediates 2a-c.     

Asymmetric oxidation of sulfides catalyzed by (R)-6,6'-dibromo-BINOL derived titanium complex

Abstract

An efficient asymmetric oxidation of sulfides was achieved using (R)-6,6'-dibromo-BINOL as chiral ligand in combination with Ti(OⁱPr)₄ using 70% aqueous tertiary butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant. The resulting sulfoxides had high enantiopurities and good yields. A range of aryl alkyl and aryl benzyl sulfides were oxidized to the corresponding sulfoxides with 78–95% ee in 72–80% yields.     

d-xylose transport by Candida succiphila and Kluyveromyces marxianus

The kinetics and regulation of d-xylose uptake were investigated in the efficient pentose fermentor Candida succiphila, and in Kluyveromyces marxianus, which assimilate but do not ferment pentose sugars. Active high-affinity (K _m ∼ 3.8 mM; V _max ∼ 15 nmol/[mg·min]) and putative facilitated diffusion low-affinity (K _m ∼ 140 mM; V _max ∼ 130 nmol/[mg·min]) transport activities were found in C. succiphila grown, respectively, on xylose or glucose. K. marxianus showed facilitated diffusion low-affinity (K _m ∼ 103 mM; V _max ∼ 190 nmol/[mg·min]) transport activity when grown on xylose under microaerobic conditions, and both a low-affinity and an active high-affinity (K _m ∼ 0.2 mM; V _max ∼ 10 nmol/[mg·min]) transport activity when grown on xylose under fully aerobic conditions.     

Dipodal fluorescent chemosensor for Cu and resultant complex as a chemosensor for iodide

A dipodal receptor was synthesized by condensation of isophthalaldehyde and p-toluenesulfonylhydrazide. The receptor was found to be selective for Cu²⁺ recognition in CH₃CN. The resultant Cu²⁺ receptor complex selectively recognized iodide through cation displacement assay in a CH₃CN/H₂O (8:2, v/v) solvent system.     

A note on mixed summation-integral-type operators

Very recently Deo, in the paper “Simultaneous approximation by Lupas operators with weighted function of Szasz operators” [J. Inequal. Pure Appl. Math., 5, No. 4 (2004)] claimed to introduce the integral modifications of Lupas operators. These operators were first introduced in 1993 by Gupta and Srivastava. They estimated the simultaneous approximation for these operators and called them Baskakov-Szasz operators. There are several misprints in the paper by Deo. This motivated us to perform subsequent investigations in this direction. We extend the study and estimate a saturation result in simultaneous approximation for the linear combinations of these summation-integral-type operators. Letter: Behavior of Magnetic Tubes in Neutron Star's Interior

It is found from Maxwell's equations that the magnetic field lines are good analogues of relativistic strings. It is shown that the superconducting current in the neutron star's interior causes local rotation of magnetic flux tubes carrying quantized flux.
