Investigation of the reaction products of 5-amino-1,3-disubstituted-pyrazoles with aromatic aldehydes. synthesis of new fluorinated 1,3,4-trisubstituted-4H-pyrazolo[3,4-e][1,4]thiazepin-7-ones

The condensation products of 5-amino-1,3-disubstituted-pyrazoles with aromatic aldehydes were identified as 2,4-dihydro-2,5-diphenyl-4-(phenylmethylene)-3H-pyrazol-5-imine derivatives Treatment of these products with mercaptoacetic acid gave new fluorine containing 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-e][1,4]thiazepin-7-ones.     

Construction of vicinal quaternary carbon atoms by Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement: total synthesis of (±)-herbertenolide, (±)-herberteneacetal, (±)-herbertene-1,14-diol and (±)-herbertene-1,15-diol

Efficient total syntheses of the herbertane sesquiterpene title compounds have been accomplished employing an Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement and ring-closing metathesis reaction sequence based strategy for the construction of two stereogenic vicinal quaternary carbon atoms on a cyclopentane.     

Synthesis of the southern furan segment of furanocembranoids

Abstract

A convergent synthesis of the southern furan segment of novel furanocembranoids from Croton oblongifolius has been accomplished involving silver-catalyzed cyclization of alkynyl diol as the key step towards 2, 5-disubstituted furan ring formation.     

Growth of hair and the trace element profile a study by sectional analysis

Correlations between the growth of hair and the trace element profile have been investigated by non-destructive neuron activation analysis through gamma-ray speetrometry using NaI(Tl) as well as Ge(Li) detectors. After preliminary investigations to establish the experimental errors, the effect of washing procedures and in-person variations, hair samples belonging to ladies with known case histories, particularly with regard to dietary habits, health and profession, were examined. Scalp-hair samplex 50–100 cm in length, representing an average time span of ∼5–10 years were collected by combing. Samples in their non-anagen phase, differentiated by their roots, were analysed in 10 cm sections. The concentrations of the following elements were determined: Na, Cl, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, I, Au and Hg. Absolute values for the concentrations are reported for most of the elements, while for the rest relative values for the various sections are given. The values for the different sections vary by large factors for many elements although for some elements, like Cu and Mn, the variations are not appreciable. The unusually large concentrations of elements like Se ang Hg are in broad agreement with the case histories. However, detailed examination of the results with regard to time-dependent variations seem to pose serious problems in the applications to forensic science.     

Chiral self-dimerization of vanadium complexes on a SiO2 surface: the first heterogeneous catalyst for asymmetric 2-naphthol coupling

The self-dimerized chiral assembly of vanadium-Schiff-base complexes was found to occur on a SiO2 surface and to be the first heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric oxidative coupling of 2-naphthol with 100% selectivity and 90% enantioselectivity.     

Investigation into new materials for optical devices: the miscibility and solvent effects of azobenzene derivative blends

With the increasing demand for novel devices with optical applications the search for new materials to data store and process becomes a priority. By introducing blends, tailor made properties and low cost give added advantage. Miscibility is an essential requirement for a new material, this research thus involves miscibility studies of poly(4‐(N‐(2‐methacryloyloxyethyl)‐N‐ethylamino)‐4′‐nitroazobenzene)₉₀‐co‐(methyl methacrylate)₁₀, (azobenzene derivative) with polymethyl‐methacrylate (PMMA), polyvinylacetate (PVAc) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) prepared in tetrahydrofuran (THF), and/or dimethylformamide (DMF) and/or dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂). The glass transitions, solvent and varying molecular weight effect were investigated, since these all primarily influence the miscibility. THF was found to encourage miscibility at specific compositions of PVAc and PVC blends. However, with CH₂Cl₂ and DMF immiscibility is encouraged. The Fox–Flory equation was applied to the blends analyzing the PVC blends in DMF as deviations from ideality. Different molecular weights of PMMA were identified as immiscible regardless of solvent. PMMA's lower solubility in THF and CH₂Cl₂ compared to the azobenzene derivative, displayed the existence of PMMA islands. In all blends the favorable and unfavorable interactions between polymer–solvent–polymer systems are considered. Furthermore, the miscibility effect on increasing the MMA content of the azobenzene derivative was also investigated. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Application of sodium metaperiodate for the determination of ribavirin in pharmaceutical formulations

Three simple and sensitive visible spectrophotometric methods (A-C) have been described for the assay of ribavirin either in pure form or in pharmaceutical formulations. They are based on the oxidation of ribavirin with excess sodium metaperiodate and estimating either the products formed (dialdehyde with MBTH, method A; iodate with metol-sulphanilamide, in the presence of Mo(VI) and iodide, method B) or the amount of periodate consumed (celestine blue in the presence of telurium (IV), method C). All of the variables have been optimized and the reaction mechanisms presented. The concentration measurements are reproducible within a R.S.D. of 1.0%. Recoveries are 99.2-101.2%.     

Dynamics of an enzymatic substitution reaction in haloalkane dehalogenase

Reactive flux molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out using a combined QM/MM potential to study the dynamics of the nucleophilic substitution reaction of dichloroethane by a carboxylate group in haloalkane dehalogenase and in water. We found that protein dynamics accelerates the reaction rate by a factor of 2 over the uncatalyzed reaction. Compared to the thermodynamic effect in barrier reduction, protein dynamic contribution is relatively small. However, analyses of the friction kernel reveal that the origins of the reaction dynamics in water and in the enzyme are different. In aqueous solution, there is significant electrostatic solvation effect, which is reflected by the slow reorganization relaxation of the solvent. On the other hand, there is no strong electrostatic coupling in the enzyme and the major effect on reaction coordinate motion is intramolecular energy relaxation.     

Thiourea to bicyclic scaffolds: highly regio- and stereoselective routes to dithiazolopyrimidines

Microwave-activated solvent-free Michael addition of 3-imino-1,4,2-dithiazoles to 4-arylidene-5(4H)-oxazolones furnished isolable adducts regio- and diastereoselectively, which underwent ring transformation to yield the target dithiazolopyrimidines. Alternatively, the similar conjugate addition of methanesulfinylmethylisothioureas to 4-arylidene-5(4H)-oxazolones diastereoselectively afforded Michael adducts, which underwent ring transformation followed by heterocyclization via deoxygenative demethylation with thionyl chloride to yield the same products dithiazolopyrimidines regio- and diastereoselectively.     

Design and synthesis of novel fluoropeptidomimetics as potential mimics of the transition state during peptide hydrolysis

alpha-Fluoroamino acids were targeted in our ongoing efforts to design novel fluoropeptidomimetics (1) as potential protease inhibitors. alpha-Fluoroglycine derivative (2) and alpha-fluoro-beta-aminoethanethiol derivatives (3-9) were synthesized for the first time en route to obtain the peptidomimetic moiety 1. The stability of 2-9 was investigated under organic as well as aqueous conditions. The stability of 3-9 under acidic and basic conditions, the effect of substitution at C-2 position, and potential biological activities are discussed.
