Viscous dissipative fluid flow past a semi‐infinite vertical plate with variable surface temperature

An analysis of the effect of viscous dissipative heat on two‐dimensional viscous incompressible fluid flow past a semi‐infinite vertical plate with variable surface temperature is carried out. The dimensionless governing equations are unsteady, two‐dimensional, coupled, and non‐linear governing equations. A most accurate, unconditionally stable and fast converging implicit finite‐difference scheme is used to solve the non‐dimensional governing equations. Velocity and temperature of the flow have been presented graphically for various parameters occurring in the problem. The local and average skin friction and Nusselt number are also shown graphically. It is observed that greater viscous dissipative heat causes a rise in the temperature. Effective electro-chemo-therapy for proliferation control of adult human mesenchymal stem cells

Clinically chemo-resistant types of cancers do not respond well to conventional therapies. To treat and enhance the efficacy of drug delivery for these cancers, we have developed an in vitro model of a combination therapy using adult human mesenchymal stem cells, electrical pulses and chemo drug. Adult Mesenchymal stem cells were used because they are similar to cancer stem cells which cause the tumor to be chemo- and radiation resistant. These cells, derived from human adult bone marrow were subjected to low voltage, long duration (200 V/cm, 40 ms and 450 V/cm, 25 ms) and high voltage, short duration (1200 V/cm, 100 μs) pulses. The effect of these voltages on the viability and proliferation ability of these cells in the presence and absence of Bleomycin (chemodrug used for treating various cancers, FDA approved in US and other respective medical agencies in other countries,) indicate the potential of transfer of this technique to clinical practice for effective electro-targeted stem cell therapy.     

Influence of magnetic field by free convection flow past an impulsively started vertical cylinder in the presence of Dufour and Soret effects

Numerical modeling of two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar, isothermal heat and mass transfer by MHD free convection flow past an impulsively started vertical cylinder in the presence of Dufour and Soret effects is considered. The governing equations of the flow problems, valid in the free convection regime, are transformed into a nondimensional form using appropriate nondimensional parameters. These equations are solved numerically by an efficient, implicit, iterative, finite-difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson type. A parametric study illustrating the influence of the magnetic field, Grashof number, and the Dufour and Soret numbers on the fluid velocity, temperature, and concentration, as well as the local and average skin friction, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers is conducted. The obtained results are shown graphically and the physical aspects of the problem are discussed.     

Ipso-nitration of carboxylic acids using a mixture of nitronium tetrafluoroborate,base and 1-hexyl-3,4,5-trimethyl-1H-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate

An eco-friendly and a simple ipso-nitration protocol for a series of aliphatic and (hetero)aromatic carboxylic acids using nitronium tetrafluoroborate, 1-hexyl-3,4,5-trimethyl-1H-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate and base is reported. While contrasted with recently known decarboxylative ipso-nitration strategies for the preparation of nitro compounds, this protocol does not require a toxic metal catalyst and harmful volatile organic solvents. Moreover, this method is perfect for a broad range of functional groups and affords exclusively the ipso-nitrated product in moderate to good yields.     

Desymmetrization of meso diols using enantiopure zinc (II) dimers: Synthesis and chiroptical properties

The one‐pot metal templated synthesis of enantiopure binuclear Zn (II) complexes Zn₂L¹–Zn₂L⁴ were obtained by treating (1R,2R)‐diphenylethylenediamine or (1S,2S)‐diphenylethylenediamine with 2‐hydroxy‐5‐methyl‐1,3‐benzenedicarboxaldehyde or 4‐tert‐butyl‐2,6‐diformylphenol and zinc acetate. The chiroptical properties of the complexes were studied by using circular dichroism spectroscopy. These ΔΔ and ΛΛ complexes were used as enantioselective catalysts for desymmetrization of meso diol to achieve monobenzoylated product with 96% yield and 88% ee.     

Late-stage lipidation of fully elaborated tryptophan-containing peptides for improved pharmacokinetics

The late-stage modification of native peptides to alter and/or enhance their properties and functions is attractive but formidably challenging. Peptide lipidation is one of the effective strategies to overcome short half-life and rapid clearance. Herein, we report a late-stage installation of a fatty acid lipid onto fully elaborated peptides, using glucagon as an example, through regio- and chemoselective functionalization of tryptophan with high potency and remarkable in vivo half-life extension.     

Free convection effects on a vertical cone with variable viscosity and thermal conductivity

The present paper deals with a flow of a viscous incompressible fluid along a heated vertical cone, with due allowance for variations of viscosity and thermal diffusivity with temperature. The fluid viscosity is assumed to be an exponential function of temperature, and the thermal diffusivity is assumed to be a linear function of temperature. The governing equations for laminar free convection of the fluid are transformed into dimensionless partial differential equations, which are solved by a finite difference method with the Crank–Nicolson implicit scheme. Dependences of the flow parameters on the fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity are obtained.     

Effects of magnetohydrodynamic flow past a vertical plate with variable surface temperature

An analysis is performed to study the magnetohydrodynamic flow of an electrically conducting, viscous incompressible fluid past a semi-infinite vertical plate with variable surface temperature under the action of transversely applied magnetic field. The heat due to viscous dissipation and the induced magnetic field are assumed to be negligible. The dimensionless governing equations are unsteady, two-dimensional, coupled and non-linear governing equations. It is found that the magnetic field parameter has a retarding effect on the velocities of air and water.     

Manipulation of N,O-nucleophilicity: efficient formation of 4-N-substituted 2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazolin-3-ones

A new efficient two-step synthesis of 2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazolin-3-ones (triazolinones) from readily available amines is reported. Our novel conditions using hexamethyl disilazane, bromotrimethylsilane, and a catalytic amount of ammonium sulfate smoothly cyclize 1-formyl and 1-acetyl semicarbazides to the target triazolinones. This transformation features simultaneous manipulation of N- and O-nucleophilicity as well as differentiation of the nucleophilicity of a urea and an acyl carbonyl.
