Solvent extraction separation of gallium with 18crown6 from chloride media

Gallium was quantitatively extracted with 0.02M 18crown6 in methylene chloride from 6M hydrochloric acid, then stripped with 1M acetic acid and determined with 2-(pyridylazo)naphthol with measurement at 545 nm. Gallium was separated from indium, thallium, lead, aluminium and bismuth. The method was applied to determination of gallium in bauxite.     

Pyridinium Iodochloride: An Efficient Reagent for Iodination of Hydroxylated Aromatic Ketones and Aldehydes

Direct iodination of several reactive aromatic compounds like hydroxy substituted acetophenones and aldehydes with pyridinium iodochloride (PyICl) proceeded smoothly to afford the corresponding aromatic iodides in good to excellent yield. Pyridinium iodochloride has been found to be an efficient solid iodinating reagent with no hazardous effect and it can be handled safely.     

Synthesis and characterization of new cardo polyesters

New phthalide-containing bisphenols, phenolphthalein-N-(3-methylanilide) (3-PMA), and phenolphthalein-N-(4-methylanilide) (4-PMA), were synthesized from phenolphthalein and m- and p-toluidines. These bisphenols were polycondensed with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) using an interfacial or solution polymerization technique to yield new polyesters. Copolymers were also obtained by utilizing different molar proportion of phenolphthalein (PPH) and 3-PMA or 4-PMA with TPC. The polymers prepared by solution polymerization were obtained in 93–99% yields and showed reduced viscosities in the range 0.37–0.83 dL/g. They were readily soluble in chlorinated hydrocarbons and aprotic polar solvents. The polyesters showed glass transition temperatures in the range 261–300°C as measured by DSC. Thermogravimetric analysis of the polyesters indicated no weight loss below 408°C under N₂ atmosphere. New Synthesis of 1-Aryl-4-(4-hydroxy-3,5-diiodo-α-methylbenzylidene)-2-phenylimidazol-5-ones

Some new 1-aryl-4-(4-hydroxy-3,5-diiodo--methylbenzylidene)-2-phenylimidazol-5-ones were prepared by treating the mixture of an analogous 5-oxazolone derivative with aromatic and substituted aromatic amines in the presence of Zeolite (Y-H) catalyst.
