Determination of acid sites on carbon surface

Pyridine chemisorbed on acid sites of active carbon was displaced by n-butylamine and the displaced amount was measured spectrophotometrically. This amount, supposed to be proportional to the surface concentration of carboxy groups, depends on the chemical pretreatment of active carbon.

The additivity principle in pyrolysis—gas chromatography of brown coal

Pyrolysis—gas chromatography of brown coal exhibits additive properties and it is therefore possible to construct the pyrogram of the original coal from the individual pyrograms of the bitumen, humic acids, lignin and humin fractions. The contents of phenols in the pyrograms are typical for all of the above classes except bitumen and are in agreement with the contents of the individual groups in the original coal. The results suggest that the separation does not bring about significant chemical changes in individual brown coal fractions.     

Dynamic behavior in diplatinum metalloreceptors

Diplatinum metalloreceptors anti-4a and anti-4b exhibit dynamic behavior in solution that is modified by anion binding. An X-ray crystal structure determination of anti-4a supports its proposed solution structure.     

Josephson junction through a thin ferromagnetic layer: negative coupling

We investigate Josephson coupling through a ferromagnetic thin film using superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor planar junctions. Damped oscillations of the critical current are observed as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. We show that they result from the exchange energy gained or lost by a quasiparticle Andreev-reflected at the ferromagnet-superconductor interface. The critical current cancels out at the transition from positive ("0") to negative ("pi") coupling, in agreement with theoretical calculations.     

Time-domain Fresnel-to-Fraunhofer diffraction with photon echoes

A photon echo experiment in Tm(3+):YAG is reported that shows, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, the time-domain equivalent of the transition from near- to far-field diffraction, including Talbot self-imaging effects. The experiment demonstrates the huge dispersion capability of photon echoes and opens the way to further exploration of space-time duality.     

THE EFFECT OF MONOCHROMATIC LIGHT ON TRANS-HEXADECENOIC ACID and CHLOROPHYLL ACCUMULATION IN ETIOLATED LEAVES OF VIGNA SINENSIS L.*

Abstract— Spectral sensitivities for C16 rranshexadecenoic acid accumulation in etiolated leaves of Vigna sinensis L. show two maxima, one in the blue and one in the far red, indicating a control by the high irradiance reaction. Spectral sensitivities are different for rranshexadecenoic acid and chlorophyll accumulation indicating that the biosynthesis of these compounds must not be obligatory linked.
