Unavoidable cycle lengths in graphs

An old conjecture of Erd?s states that there exists an absolute constant c and a set S of density zero such that every graph of average degree at least c contains a cycle of length in S. Area laws in quantum systems: mutual information and correlations

The holographic principle states that on a fundamental level the information content of a region should depend on its surface area rather than on its volume. In this Letter we show that this phenomenon not only emerges in the search for new Planck-scale laws but also in lattice models of classical and quantum physics: the information contained in part of a system in thermal equilibrium obeys an area law. While the maximal information per unit area depends classically only on the number of degrees of freedom, it may diverge as the inverse temperature in quantum systems. It is shown that an area law is generally implied by a finite correlation length when measured in terms of the mutual information.     

String order and symmetries in quantum spin lattices

We show that the existence of string order in a given quantum state is intimately related to the presence of a local symmetry by proving that both concepts are equivalent within the framework of finitely correlated states. Once this connection is established, we provide a complete characterization of local symmetries in these states. The results allow us to understand in a straightforward way many of the properties of string order parameters, like their robustness or fragility under perturbations and their typical disappearance beyond strictly one-dimensional lattices. We propose and discuss an alternative definition, ideally suited for detecting phase transitions, and generalizations to two and more spatial dimensions.     

Determination of phosphine in biogas and sludge at ppt-levels with gas chromatography-thermionic specific detection

A gas chromatographic (GC) system to measure free phosphine in biogas and matrix bound phosphine in manure and sludge is presented. The system consists of a sample preconcentration trap filled with glass beads, connected with a capillary GC equipped with a thermionic specific detector. With a trap temperature as low as -155 degrees C, a sampling flow of 20 ml/min and a typical total sample volume of 100 ml, free phosphine concentrations in the low ng/m3 range and matrix bound phosphine in the low ng/kg dry matter range, can be accurately and reproducibly determined.     

Hydrogenation of

The course of the hydrogenation of [5]- and [6]metacyclophane (1b and 1c) and their thermochemistry is described. Both compounds are hydrogenated rapidly (within 10 s) to furnish the bridgehead olefins 13b and 12c. The accompanying hydrogenation enthalpies are -220 and -141 kJmol(-1), respectively. Strain energies (SE) and olefinic strains (OS) of a number of bridgehead olefins have been evaluated by DFT calculations; it was concluded that 13b belongs to the class of hyperstable olefins which correlates nicely with its reluctance to undergo hydrogenation. By combining experimental hydrogenation enthalpies and DFT calculations, SE of 187 and 121 kJmol(-1) were derived for 1b and 1c.
