Preparation, characterization and thermolysis of metal nitrate complexes with 4,4’-bipyridine

Two bis(bipyridine) polymeric metal nitrate complexes with 4,4’-bipyridine of simple formula like [M(bipy)₂](NO₃)2⋅xH₂O (where M=Co, Ni and Cu; x=4, 2 and 0, respectively) have been prepared and characterized. Their thermal decomposition has been undertaken using simultaneous TG-DTG-DTA and DSC in nitrogen atmosphere and non-isothermal TG in air atmosphere. Isothermal TG has been performed at decomposition temperature range of the complexes to evaluate the kinetics of decomposition by applying model-fitting as well as isoconversional method. Possible mechanistic pathways have also been proposed for the thermolysis. Ignition delay measurements have been carried out to investigate the response of these complexes under the condition of rapid heating.

Construction and properties of sub-miniature pressure pickups

Summary Two manometers for dynamical measurements (up to frequencies of the order of 50 Hz) are described which were developed for measuring blood pressure in cardiac catheterization studies and for measurements in pneumatic controllers respectively. The principle of a differential transformer was used in which the core was entirely borne by a phosphorbronze membrane. The diameter of the blood pressure manometer is 2 mm (fitting to no. 6 catheter), its length 10 mm. The most important properties of the manometers are to be found in § 4.     

THE LETHAL EFFECT OF LONGWAVE ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT AND PUVA. AN ANALYSIS BASED UPON HUMAN MESENCHYMAL CELLS IN VITRO

Abstract— The lethal effect of UVA and PUVA radiation was studied in cultures of fresh and mature monocytes. UVA radiation alone was shown to possess a lethal effect at doses which are attained in the dermis in vivo. The synergistic action of 8-methoxypsoralen and UVA radiation predominated in PUVA radiation, but again a residual effect of UVA alone was demonstrated mathematically. Mature cells were less sensitive than fresh monocytes.
Our results indicate that a monolayer culture of non-dividing, mesenchymal cells offers considerable advantages over in vivo systems as a model for the study of phototoxicity.     

Analysis of beer iso-α-acids by micellar electrokinetic chromatography and multi-wavelength UV detection

The identification of beer bitter acids in a pre-isomerized hop extract by means of their UV-spectra is described. Preliminary data for the analysis of these compounds in beer samples are presented.     

Spatially resolved spectroscopy and structurally encoded imaging by magnetic resonance force microscopy of quadrupolar spin systems

Enhancement of the sensitivity of magnetic resonance force microscopy allowed the extension of the technique to observe half-integer quadrupolar nuclei. This is demonstrated for various different compounds and nuclei with different spin numbers. The possibility of obtaining spatially localized spectral information through the quadrupole interaction is implemented by using nutation NMR. This enables us to superimpose a contrast function on the image of materials depending on their local lattice structure. This opens up new possibilities for both surface and subsurface studies in materials chemistry.
