Non-trivial simple poles at negative integers and mass concentration at singularity

Let (X,0) be the germ of a normal space of dimension n+1 and let f be the germ at 0 of a holomorphic function on X. Assume both X and f have an isolated singularity at 0. Denote by J the image of the restriction map , where F is the Milnor fibre of f at 0. We prove that the canonical Hermitian form on , given by poles of order at in the meromorphic extension of , passes to the quotient by J and is non-degenerate on . We show that any non-zero element in J produces a “mass concentration” at the singularity which is related to a simple pole concentrated at for (in a non-na?ve sense). Liquid chromatographic analysis of prednisolone, prednisone and their 20-reduced metabolites in perfusion media

A reversed-phase liquid chromatographic assay was developed to quantitate prednisolone, prednisone and the 20 alpha-dihydro and 20 beta-dihydro reduced metabolites of both parent compounds in tissue culture media from in vitro perfusions of the human placental lobule. Steroids were extracted from perfusate, using reversed-phase cartridges, with average recoveries of 95.2% or greater. The internal standard for the analyses was 6 alpha-methylprednisolone. In this assay cortisol coelutes with prednisolone, however, no other significant interferences were found. Assay of each steroid was linear in the range 0-1 microgram/ml. Intra-assay coefficients of variation were measured at 10 and 750 ng/ml with ranges of 3.4% (20 alpha-dihydroprednisone) to 8.8% (20 beta-dihydroprednisolone) and 4.1% (20 beta-dihydroprednisone) to 8.8% (prednisone). The corresponding inter-assay coefficients of variation were 3.3% (20 alpha-dihydroprednisone) to 9.1% (20 beta-dihydroprednisolone) and 1.9% (prednisolone) to 3.5% (prednisone). The analyses utilized two C18 columns which were linked together and maintained at 40 degrees C.

Summary The investigation methods of the action of xenobiotics on sterol biosynthesis from ¹⁴C-acetate in rat hepatocyte cultures can be developed, with regard to extraction using Extrelut and the separation of the sterol pattern by thin-layer chromatography, in such a way that they are suitable for wider application, e.g., screening. Good visualisation and recognition of changes in the sterol pattern are possible using autoradiography of the thin-layer chromatogram.

Quantitative oxygen imaging in an engine

Simultaneous imaging of laser-induced fluorescence of toluene and 3-pentanone was used to determine the local absolute oxygen and residual gas concentrations present within an engine. The technique utilizes the different sensitivities of the laser-excited molecules to quenching by molecular oxygen as a means to determine quantitative images of in-cylinder oxygen concentrations. The difference in the amount of oxygen available between two operating conditions was investigated. Results are in agreement with measurements in the exhaust gas. Low-Frequency Parasitic Space-Charge Oscillations in the Helical Electron Beam of a Gyrotron

We developed a medium-power pulsed gyrotron equipped with diagnostic systems for studying low-frequency parasitic space-charge oscillations in the helical electron beam and the energy spectrum of electrons in the collector region. Methods for suppressing parasitic oscillations are proposed and tested. An explanation of the mechanism of suppression of these oscillations is given.     

An improved linearization strategy for zero-one quadratic programming problems

We present a new linearized model for the zero-one quadratic programming problem, whose size is linear in terms of the number of variables in the original nonlinear problem. Our derivation yields three alternative reformulations, each varying in model size and tightness. We show that our models are at least as tight as the one recently proposed in [7], and examine the theoretical relationship of our models to a standard linearization of the zero-one quadratic programming problem. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of solving each of these models on a set of randomly generated test instances.
