Interrupted Baeyer–Villiger Rearrangement: Building A Stereoelectronic Trap for the Criegee Intermediate

The instability of hydroxy peroxyesters, the elusive Criegee intermediates of the Baeyer–Villiger rearrangement, can be alleviated by selective deactivation of the stereoelectronic effects that promote the 1,2‐alkyl shift. Stable cyclic Criegee intermediates constrained within a five‐membered ring can be prepared by mild reduction of the respective hydroperoxy peroxyesters (β‐hydroperoxy‐β‐peroxylactones) which were formed in high yields in reaction of β‐ketoesters with BF₃?Et₂O/H₂O₂.     

Improving the water resistance of epoxy–anhydride matrices by the incorporation of bentonite

Epoxy–anhydride‐based polymers are commonly used as a matrix in pipeline systems exposed to water during their in‐service life. Water absorption at moderate temperatures and/or at long exposure times could lead to irreversible hydrolysis reaction decreasing considerably the polymer overall performance. A strategy to enhance the barrier properties of epoxy resins is to add nanofillers to traditional matrices. In this work, we added bentonite and chemically modified bentonite to this purpose. Water absorption of the resulting materials at three different temperatures (22°C, 80°C, and 93°C) was studied, and simultaneously, the evolution during the immersion tests of glass transition temperature and flexural modulus was recorded. Long‐term gravimetric results showed that composites with chemically modified bentonite produce a delay on the hydrolysis of epoxy–anhydride matrix, which is a relevant result, because of the tough application and uses of the system, from the technological point of view. Determination of water-soluble vitamins in pharmaceutical preparations by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with a mobile phase containing sodium dodecylsulphate andn-propanol

Summary A reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method with sodium dodecylsulphate-n-propanolwater as mobile phase has been used to separate and determine six water-soluble vitamins in twelve minutes. The analytical characteristics linear range, sensitivity, detection limits, and precision were evaluated. The lowest detection limits were those of nicotinic acid (not usually present in pharmaceutical products), 0.7 mgL⁻¹, nicotinamide, 1.3 mg L⁻¹, and pyridoxine, 1.4 mg L⁻¹. When the method was applied to the determination of the vitamins in pharmaceutical samples the values found agreed with those on the labels.

The effective methods of phosphorylation of complex systems with specifically orientated in space hydroxyl groups, namely dianhydro-D-mannitol(A), -D-sor-bitol(B), cyclodextrines(C), and cellulose(D) (A-D, where R=H), have been elaborated.     

Optimization and data mining in medicine

Mathematical theory of optimization has found many applications in the area of medicine over the last few decades. Several data analysis and decision making problems in medicine can be formulated using optimization and data mining techniques. The significance of the mathematical models is greatly realized in the recent years owing to the growing technological capabilities and the large amounts of data available. In this paper, we attempt to give a brief overview of some of the most interesting applications of mathematical programming and data mining in medicine. In the overview, we include applications like radiation therapy treatment, microarray data analysis, and computational neuroscience.     

Diastereo-controlled Diels–Alder cycloadditions of erythrose benzylidene-acetal 1,3-butadienes by 4-substituted-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione: Evidence for the stereoelectronic effects on the dienes

Erythrose benzylidene-acetal 1,3-butadienes are studied as partners in Diels–Alder cycloadditions. A high diastereofacial improvement is found in cases where both the alcohol function is protected and a π–π interaction between the diene and dienophile is possible. Several competing factors have been studied independently in order to explain its influence on the selectivity of the cycloadditions.     

Synthesis of alpha-galactosyl ceramide,a potent immunostimulatory agent

Alpha-galactosyl ceramide has been identified to be a potent stimulatory agent for a novel immunological process, mediated by CD1 molecules. This paper describes a short and efficient synthesis of alpha-galactosyl ceramide. Starting from commercially available 2-deoxy galactose, a suitable sphingosine derivative was obtained in nine steps and 36% overall yield, which was subsequently glycosylated to give the target molecule. This flexible route will provide various glycolipids for further exploration of this interesting biological process.     

Enhanced drainage and coarsening in aqueous foams

Experiments are presented elucidating how the evolution of foam microstructure by gas diffusion from high to low pressure bubbles can significantly speed up the rate of gravitational drainage, and vice versa. This includes detailed data on the liquid-fraction dependence of the coarsening rate, and on the liquid-fraction and the bubble-size profiles across a sample. These results can be described by a "coarsening equation" for the increase of bubble growth rate for drier foams. Spatial variation of the average bubble size and liquid fraction can also affect the growth and drainage rates.
