Lanczos–Lovelock models of gravity

Lanczos–Lovelock models of gravity represent a natural and elegant generalization of Einstein’s theory of gravity to higher dimensions. They are characterized by the fact that the field equations only contain up to second derivatives of the metric even though the action functional can be a quadratic or higher degree polynomial in the curvature tensor. Because these models share several key properties of Einstein’s theory they serve as a useful set of candidate models for testing the emergent paradigm for gravity. This review highlights several geometrical and thermodynamical aspects of Lanczos–Lovelock models which have attracted recent attention.     

Asymmetric Synthesis of (2S)‐1‐(3,4‐Dihydroxyphenoxy)‐3‐(3,′4′‐Dimethoxyphenoxy) Ethylamino‐2‐propanol hydrochloride (RO363)

Enantiomerically pure (S)‐RO363 was synthesized by using (R,R) Salen Co(III) complex for the resolution of terminal epoxide. The hydrolytic kinetic resolution process was carried out at room temperature in excellent enantioselectivity. The method can be applied for large‐scale preparation of (S) RO363.     

Mild and Highly Efficient Protocol for the Synthesis of Benzimidazoles Using Samarium Triflate [Sm(OTf)3]

One-pot synthesis of benzimidazole compounds from ortho-phenylenediamine and a variety of aldehydes was developed under mild reaction conditions. All the reactions were carried out in the presence of samarium triflate (10 mol%) in acetonitrile at room temperature.     

Uncovering the Stoichiometry of Pyrococcus furiosus RNase P,a Multi‐Subunit Catalytic Ribonucleoprotein Complex,by Surface‐Induced Dissociation and Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry

We demonstrate that surface‐induced dissociation (SID) coupled with ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM‐MS) is a powerful tool for determining the stoichiometry of a multi‐subunit ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex assembled in a solution containing Mg²⁺. We investigated Pyrococcus furiosus (Pfu) RNase P, an archaeal RNP that catalyzes tRNA 5′ maturation. Previous step‐wise, Mg²⁺‐dependent reconstitutions of Pfu RNase P with its catalytic RNA subunit and two interacting protein cofactor pairs (RPP21⋅RPP29 and POP5⋅RPP30) revealed functional RNP intermediates en route to the RNase P enzyme, but provided no information on subunit stoichiometry. Our native MS studies with the proteins showed RPP21⋅RPP29 and (POP5⋅RPP30)₂ complexes, but indicated a 1:1 composition for all subunits when either one or both protein complexes bind the cognate RNA. These results highlight the utility of SID and IM‐MS in resolving conformational heterogeneity and yielding insights on RNP assembly.

A short and concise route to total synthesis of Dendrodolide L

A short and efficient method for the stereoselective synthesis of Dendrodolide L has been developed from inexpensive and commercially available starting material. This convergent synthesis utilizes Jacobsen kinetic resolution, regioselective ring-opening of epoxide and Yamaguchi macrolactonization as key steps.     

Regeneration of Carbonyl Compounds from Oximes and Hydrazones Using Peroxymonosulfate on Silica gel under Solvent-free Conditions

In an environmentally benign solvent-free system, oximes and hydrazones are rapidly transformed into parent carbonyl compounds using peroxymonosulfate on silica gel under microwave irradiation in good to excellent yields.
