We performed electric arc discharges in pure Si to generate luminous balls with lifetime in the order of seconds and several properties usually reported for natural ball lightning. This simple experiment does not rely on energy sources and excitation mechanisms that are improbable in the natural phenomenon and clearly demonstrates the role of vaporization and oxidation of Si, as proposed by the Abrahamson-Dinniss theory for ball-lightning formation. 相似文献

The increasing need for renewable energy resources has led to higher demands for biofuel, a scenario where the castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) seed oil represents a promising source of raw material. Despite that, information regarding the genome organization of R. communis is still scarce, impairing the application of modern biotechnological and breeding procedures. The present work brings the first evaluation of the mitotic chromosomes of this species, including 10 potentially interesting accessions for cultivation in semi-arid environments aiming at the biofuel production. The approach included standard staining, fluorochrome staining (CMA/DAPI), fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with rDNA 5S and 45S, as well as silver impregnation. All accessions were diploid with 2n = 2x = 20, displaying mainly metacentric chromosomes, with CMA-positive bands (GC-rich) in all pairs of the complement. After silver impregnation, one to 14 nucleoli were observed, while the FISH with rDNA 45S revealed two large sites and a variety of minor dots, and the DNAr 5S hybridized in a single pair. ZnO/p- SiC heterojunctions were fabricated by thermal evaporation from ZnO high quality powder (99.99%) onto 4H and 6H p-SiC polytypes. We find that, despite the low cost technique employed for the deposition of the ZnO film, the devices exhibited breakdown voltages in excess of 100 V, high rectification ratio (forward to reverse current ratio, IF/IR) and low leakage current, respectively, 2×105 and 4.5×10−7 A/cm2 (for the 4H p-SiC based device) and 5×104 and 5×10−7 A/cm2 (for the 6H p-SiC based device). The current-voltage (I×V) characteristics were also measured at the nanometer scale by means of conductive atomic force microscopy. A simple Schottky diode model and conductance divided by current versus conductance plots (G/I×G plots) was used to analyze device characteristics. This analysis shows that, when probing at the nanometric scale, fluctuations of the effective barrier height and/or surface states across individual grains or grain boundaries cause deviations from linear G/I×G plots. These fluctuations are smeared out when probing at the macroscale and thus it becomes possible to obtain linear plots and extract diode parameters. 相似文献

A simple simulation scheme that simultaneously describes the growth kinetics of SiO2 films at the nanometer scale and the SiOx/Si interface dynamics (its extent, and spatial/temporal evolution) is presented. The simulation successfully applies to experimental data in the region above and below 10 nm, reproduces the Deal and Grove linear-parabolic law and the oxide growth rate enhancement in the very thin film regime (the so-called anomalous region). According to the simulation, the oxidation is governed mainly by two processes: (a) the formation of a transition suboxide layer and (b) its subsequent drift towards the silicon bulk. We found that it is the superposition of these two processes that produces the crossover from the anomalous oxidation region behavior to the linear-parabolic law. 相似文献

Most quantum computation schemes propose encoding qubits in two-level systems. Others exploit the use of an infinite-dimensional system. In "Encoding a qubit in an oscillator" [Phys. Rev. A 64, 012310 (2001)], Gottesman, Kitaev, and Preskill (GKP) combined these approaches when they proposed a fault-tolerant quantum computation scheme in which a qubit is encoded in the continuous position and momentum degrees of freedom of an oscillator. One advantage of this scheme is that it can be performed by use of relatively simple linear optical devices, squeezing, and homodyne detection. However, we lack a practical method to prepare the initial GKP states. Here we propose the generation of an approximate GKP state by using superpositions of optical coherent states (sometimes called "Schr?dinger cat states"), squeezing, linear optical devices, and homodyne detection. 相似文献

The larvicidal action of the entomopathogen Bacillus sphaericus towards Culex quinquefasciatus is due to the binary (Bin) toxin present in crystals, which are produced during bacterial sporulation. The Bin toxin needs to recognize and bind specifically to a single class of receptors, named Cqm1, which are 60-kDa α-glucosidases attached to the apical membrane of midgut cells by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor. C. quinquefasciatus resistance to B. sphaericus has been often associated with the absence of the α-glucosidase Cqm1 in larvae midgut microvilli. In this work, we aimed to investigate, at the ultrastructural level, the midgut cells from C. quinquefasciatus larvae whose resistance relies on the lack of the Cqm1 receptor. The morphological analysis showed that midgut columnar cells from the resistant larvae are characterized by a pronounced production of lipid inclusions, throughout the 4th instar. At the end of this stage, resistant larvae had an increased size and number of these inclusions in the midgut cells, while only a small number were observed in the cells from susceptible larvae. The morphological differences in the midgut cells of resistant larvae found in this work suggested that the lack of the Cqm1 receptor, which also has a physiological role as being an α-glucosidase, can be related to changes in the cell metabolism. The ultrastructural effects of Bin toxin on midgut epithelial cells from susceptible and resistant larvae were also investigated. The cytopathological alterations observed in susceptible larvae treated with a lethal concentration of toxin included breakdown of the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrial swelling, microvillar disruption and vacuolization. Some effects were observed in cells from resistant larvae, although those alterations did not lead to larval death, indicating that the receptor Cqm1 is essential to mediate the larvicidal action of the toxin.This is the first ultrastructural study to show differences in the cell morphology of resistant larvae and further investigation is needed to understand the impact of the lack of expression of midgut enzymes on the physiology of resistant insects. 相似文献

An additivity formula is obtained for the grade of an ideal in a residue ring R/I, where I is a perfect ideal. This result is then applied to compute the grade of ideals of linear (inhomogeneous) polynomials. Further results on the homological rigidity of the conormal module I/I2 are pointed out. In this work we investigate magnonic band gaps, in the terahertz (THz) frequency range, in periodic and quasiperiodic (Fibonacci sequence) magnonic crystals formed by layers of Cobalt (Co) and Permalloy (Py). Our theoretical model is based on a magnetic Heisenberg Hamiltonian in the exchange regime, together with a transfer-matrix treatment within the random-phase approximation (RPA). For periodic arrangements the bulk band structure is analogous to those found in photonic crystals, while for quasiperiodic multilayers it presents additional pass bands similar to those found in doped electronic materials. 相似文献

In this work we present a fractal analysis of the spin wave modes propagating in a Fibonacci quasiperiodic metamagnetic superlattices consisting of a ferromagnetic material (layer A being Fe) and a metamagnetic material (layer B being FeBr2). The spin wave modes are obtained in the exchange regime, using the transfer matrix technique. Our numerical results show that the power law for this system is independent of the dimensionless in-plane wavevector kxa, and that the spectrum present a multifractal characteristic, exhibiting several scale invariant windows for a fixed value of the in-plane wavevector. The results reported here can be experimentally observed by light scattering techniques. 相似文献

This work presents an analysis of the microstrip bandpass filter on metamaterial substrates. The filter is composed of two ring resonators with quarter-wavelength side-coupled sections. The filter input is provided, as well as the output port, using a quarter-wavelength side-coupled microstrip line section. Simulations by finite element method have been carried out to verify the effect of the metamaterial substrate properties on the filter performance, and to compare these results to those obtained considering isotropic substrate. 相似文献
