A novel dimeric discotic liquid crystal based on anthraquinone

A novel dimer based on the disc-like anthraquinone core-bis[1-(4-nitrobenzyloxy)-2,3,6,7-tetrapentyloxy-9,10-anthraquinon-5-oxy]do and its corresponding monomer 1-hexyloxy5-(4-nitrobenzyloxy)-2,3,6,7-tetrapentyloxy-9,10-anthraquinone, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction studies show that this novel dimer exhibits a hexagonal columnar phase (Col_h) with correlation among the molecular cores along the column. The Col_h phase of the dimer exists over a very wide temperature range, extending from 176°C down to at least 60°C (the lowest temperature reached in DSC), whereas the monomer exhibits a Col_h phase at high temperature and a three-dimensionally ordered columnar phase (Col_x) at low temperature.     

CuBe precipitation in Cu-Be alloys

The decomposition of supersaturated, disordered, solid solutions in the binary Cu-2 wt % Be and the ternary Cu-2 wt % Be-0.6 wt % Co alloys was found to be initiated through the formation of GP zones. The ordered CuBe phase (B2 structure) was found to form from these clusters by continuous ordering. The morphology, the crystallography and the mechanism of formation of the precipitate phase is discussed in this paper.     

Application of Polyphosphoric Acid‐Mediated Acyl Migration for Regiospecific Synthesis of Diverse 2‐Acylpyrroles from Chalcones

A metal‐free approach for the synthesis of 2‐acylpyrroles is reported in this paper. Synthesis of the target molecule started from chalcones and was carried out in two steps. Initial step involved the conversion of chalcones to corresponding 4‐substituted‐3‐acylpyrroles by reaction with TosMIC. In the subsequent step, target molecules were obtained in modest to good yields by polyphosphoric acid‐mediated acyl rearrangement of 3‐acylpyrroles to their 2‐acyl congeners. The crucial final step was amenable to diverse substitutions on pyrrole ring. Preliminary experiment for the determination of mechanism indicated the involvement of acylium ion.     

Galactose-Grafted 2D Nanosheets from the Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Janus Dendrimers for the Capture and Agglutination of Escherichia coli

High aspect ratio, sugar-decorated 2D nanosheets are ideal candidates for the capture and agglutination of bacteria. Herein, the design and synthesis of two carbohydrate-based Janus amphiphiles that spontaneously self-assemble into high aspect ratio 2D sheets are reported. The unique structural features of the sheets include the extremely high aspect ratio and dense display of galactose on the surface. These structural characteristics allow the sheet to act as a supramolecular 2D platform for the capture and agglutination of E. coli through specific multivalent noncovalent interactions, which significantly reduces the mobility of the bacteria and leads to the inhibition of their proliferation. Our results suggest that the design strategy demonstrated here can be applied as a general approach for the crafting of biomolecule-decorated 2D nanosheets, which can perform as 2D platforms for their interaction with specific targets.     

Synthesis of phenanthroimidazole-based four coordinate organoboron compounds

The synthesis of N,C-coordinated organoboron compounds (B1-B4) based on phenanthroimidazole described. All the compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the compounds B1 and B3 revealed that the vicinity around the boron atom adopts tetrahedral geometry. Except compound B4, other organoboron compounds (B1-B3) does not show solvatochromism. All our newly synthesized organoboron compounds exhibited moderate to good solution state quantum yields (0.07–0.88) and moderate solid state quantum yields.
