Influenza viruses are transmitted from human to human via airborne droplets and can be transferred through contaminated environmental surfaces. Some works have demonstrated the efficacy of essential oils (EOs) as antimicrobial and antiviral agents, but most of them examined the liquid phases, which are generally toxic for oral applications. In our study, we describe the antiviral activity of Citrus bergamia, Melaleuca alternifolia, Illicium verum and Eucalyptus globulus vapor EOs against influenza virus type A. In the vapor phase, C. bergamia and M. alternifolia strongly reduced viral cytopathic effect without exerting any cytotoxicity. The E. globulus vapor EO reduced viral infection by 78% with no cytotoxicity, while I. verum was not effective. Furthermore, we characterized the EOs and their vapor phase by the head-space gas chromatography–mass spectrometry technique, observing that the major component found in each liquid EO is the same one of the corresponding vapor phases, with the exception of M. alternifolia. To deepen the mechanism of action, the morphological integrity of virus particles was checked by negative staining transmission electron microscopy, showing that they interfere with the lipid bilayer of the viral envelope, leading to the decomposition of membranes. We speculated that the most abundant components of the vapor EOs might directly interfere with influenza virus envelope structures or mask viral structures important for early steps of viral infection.  相似文献

The redox microenvironment within a cell graft can be considered as an indicator to assess whether the graft is metabolically active or hypoxic. We present a redox‐responsive MRI probe based on porous silica microparticles whose surface has been decorated with a Gd‐chelate through a disulphide bridge. Such microparticles are designed to be interspersed with therapeutic cells within a biocompatible hydrogel. The onset of reducing conditions within the hydrogel is paralleled by an increased clearance of Gd, that can be detected by MRI.  相似文献

Series of lanthanide-containing metallic coordination complexes are frequently presented as structurally analogous, due to the similar chemical and coordinative properties of the lanthanides. In the case of chiral (LnIII[15-MC N(L-pheHA)-5])3+ metallacrowns (MCs), which are well established supramolecular hosts, the formation of dimers templated by a dicarboxylate guest (muconate) in solution of neutral pH is herein shown to have a unique dependence on the identity of the MC's central lanthanide. Calorimetric data and nuclear magnetic resonance diffusion studies demonstrate that MCs containing larger or smaller lanthanides as the central metal only form monomeric host-guest complexes whereas analogues with intermediate lanthanides (for example, Eu, Gd, Dy) participate in formation of dimeric host-guest-host compartments. The driving force for the dimerization event across the series is thought to be a competition between formation of highly stable MCs (larger lanthanides) and optimally linked bridging guests (smaller lanthanides).  相似文献

A new series of linear and crosslinked copolymers, obtained from 3‐octyl‐1‐vinylimidazolium bromide (VImBr) and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), were prepared by radical polymerization. Namely, VImBr was synthesized from 1‐bromooctane and an ionic liquid such as 1‐vinylimidazole. NIPAAm was used because it gives raise to well known thermoresponsive (co‐)polymers. The copolymers were thoroughly characterized by means of 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Besides, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were also used. Moreover, the swelling behavior and the thermoresponsive properties of the corresponding hydrogels were studied. It was found that the VImBr incorporation into the copolymers does have a dramatic influence on both the thermal properties of the dried materials and the lower critical solution temperature of the corresponding hydrogels. In detail, the glass transition temperature was dependent on the monomer ratios, and ranged from 5 to 155 °C. Analogously, the lower critical solution temperature of the resulting hydrogels ranged from less than 10 up to 38 °C, thus including the physiological temperature. NMR spectroscopies, which were performed on the linear polymers, indicated that the monomers exhibit an alternating tendency resulting in a microstructure in which blocks are not present, at least when the two monomers are in equimolar amounts. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The frontal ring opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) in the presence of limonene, using second generation Grubbs’ catalysts, is reported. The effect of limonene on the amount of catalyst and the typical frontal polymerization parameters, as maximum temperature (Tmax) and velocity of the front (Vf), is studied. In addition, the influence of limonene on the mechanical properties of the polymeric samples is reported. Finally, a deep study on the swelling properties of polymers is done. It has been demonstrated that limonene acts as both inhibitor and solvent of the catalyst. The Tmax, Vf, Tg, and Young modulus values decrease as the amount of limonene increases, and the polymer samples swell in THF depending on the amount of limonene. All results indicate that the limonene addition on FROMP of results in advantages on the polymerization reaction and its parameters and on the final polymer properties. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The extracellular matrix protein Pl-nectin, a 210-kDa homodimer originally purified from sea urchin eggs, plays a crucial role in cell adhesion and embryonic morphogenesis. The compiled cDNA sequence, obtained by RT-PCR primer walking and 3′ RACE, identified a 984aa product containing a 23aa signal peptide and including all six internal peptides identified by protein microsequencing. The protein is a new member of the galactose-binding protein superfamily as it consists of six 151–156aa-long tandemly repeated domains (D1–D6), homologous to the discoidin-like domains, also known as F5/8-type C domains. Based on homology modelling, we present a three-dimensional structure (3D) for D5, identified as the prototype domain. The molecular modelling of the assembled Pl-nectin homodimer accounts for a Pl-nectin quaternary structure composed of two 105-kDa C-shaped monomers linked by a S–S bridge. The presence of an LDT motif between the first and the second exposed loops of the D2 domain suggests the binding of Pl-nectin to an integrin receptor. Altogether, the in silico analysis described here is consistent with previous biochemical reports and offers a basis for predictions to be experimentally tested.  相似文献
