Quick regiospecific analysis of fatty acids in triacylglycerols with GC using 1,3-specific lipase in butanol

A new micro-procedure for the quick regiospecific analysis of triacylglycerols (TAG) with a 1,3-specific lipase, Lipozyme IM 20 (produced from strains of Muccor miehei) is described. After dissolution of triacylglycerols in butan-1-ol or butan-2-ol 250 mg of Lipozyme IM 20 were added and the whole mixture was agitated. This operation was repeated 5-10 times and the esterified fatty acids in the form of butyl esters (FABE) were dissolved in pentane and washed with water. The pentane layer was dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent was removed under vacuum to a constant weight. The residue was analysed using GC-MS. The same triacylglycerols were converted to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The FAME were analysed by gas chromatography (GC).     

Environmental accounting for the lagoon of Venice and the case of fishing

This paper presents the application of the eMergy evaluation, introduced by H.T. Odum as an efficient methodology of environmental accounting. The results of this analysis are a part of a wider sustainability assessment for the Province of Venice realized in 2003. Within a territorial sustainability analysis, it is necessary to implement an environmental accounting method, which is able: to precisely consider the boundaries of the investigated system (spatial scale); to arbitrarily separate the life of the investigated system into periods (temporal scale); to account for both economic and natural support to a given territorial system in order to implement a sustainable management of resources; to assess all the items supporting the system on the basis of a physical unit that is objective (while the traditional economic evaluation method is based on individual preferences, hence it is subjective). The Province of Venice is a very complex system due, on one hand, to the heavy and consolidated presence of industrial activity since the beginning of the 20th century and, on the other hand, to the principal natural ecosystem which characterizes it: the lagoon, the largest wetland in the Mediterranean Sea. The role of the lagoon, as a provider of resources and services is represented by the analysis of two aspects: the lagoon as an ecosystem on the basis of the evaluation of all flows that cyclically support its biotic activity and the lagoon as a productive system on the basis of the contribution of both natural and "economic" inputs that support human activity. In particular, the case of clam fishing will be presented to put on evidence the importance of natural inputs that are systematically neglected by the traditional accounting methodologies.     

Molecular dynamics in the smectic a and C phases in a long-chain ferroelectric liquid crystal: 2H NMR, dielectric properties, and a theoretical treatment

In this work, the rotational-diffusion coefficients D(parallel) and D(perpendicular) for the ferroelectric smectogen (+)-(S)-4-[4'-(1-methylheptyloxy)] biphenyl 4-(10-undecenyloxy)benzoate have been studied by means of 2H NMR spectroscopy in the smectic C phase, using a new theoretical approach (Domenici,V.; Geppi, M.; Veracini, C. A. Chem. Phys. Lett. 2003, 382, 518). The analysis of spin-lattice relaxation times has been performed in terms of the diffusional constant and the activation energy of the internal and overall molecular-reorientational motions, and the results are compared to the smectic A (SmA) phase. Moreover, from the 2H NMR data in the SmA phase, the dielectric permittivity and the dielectric relaxation time functions are investigated using a theoretical approach. The longitudinal and transverse components of the real Rchigammaomega and imaginary chigammaomega (gamma = parallel, perpendicular) parts of the complex susceptibility tensor and the nematic-like rotational-viscosity coefficients, lambda2 and lambda5, are calculated.     

First observation of the hyperfine structure of an excited quintet state in liquid solution

After pulsed photoexcitation of a new fullerene-linked bisnitroxide, a well resolved transient EPR spectrum is detected which is assigned to an excited quintet spin state generated by spin coupling of the nitroxides and the fullerene excited triplet.     

Toward Fluorescence‐Based High‐Throughput Screening for Enantiomeric Excess in Amines and Amino Acid Derivatives

A highly accurate and reliable screening method for enantiomeric excess of amine derivatives in the presence of water is reported. The fluorescence‐based screening system has been realized by self‐assembly of chiral diol‐type dyes (BINOL, VANOL and VAPOL), 2‐formylphenylboronic acid, and chiral amines forming iminoboronate esters. The structure and chirality of the amine analytes determine the stability of the diastereomeric iminoboronate esters, which in turn display differential fluorescence. The fluorescence signal reflects the enantiomeric purity of the chiral amines and was utilized in high‐throughput arrays. The arrays were able to recognize enantiomeric excess of amines, amino esters, and amino alcohols. In addition to qualitative analysis, quantitative experiments were successfully performed. Studies of the role of additives such as water or citrate were carried out to gain insight into the stability of the iminoboronate esters. It is shown that the above additives destabilize less stable esters while the stable esters remain unchanged. Thus, the presence of water and citrate leads to increased difference between the diastereomeric iminoboronates and contributes to the enantiodiscrimination of the chiral amines.     

Efficient Synthesis of Cyclic Block Copolymers by Rotaxane Protocol by Linear/Cyclic Topology Transformation

High‐yielding synthesis of cyclic block copolymer (CBC) using the rotaxane protocol by linear‐cyclic polymer topology transformation was first demonstrated. Initial complexation of OH‐terminated sec‐ammonium salt and a crown ether was followed by the successive living ring‐opening polymerizations of two lactones to a linear block copolymer having a rotaxane structure by the final capping of the propagation end. CBC was obtained in a high yield by an exploitation of the mechanical linkage through the translational movement of the rotaxane component to transform polymer structure from linear to cyclic. Furthermore, the change of the polymer topology was translated into a macroscopic change in crystallinity of the block copolymer.
