Gilch Synthesis of Poly(ortho‐Phenylene Vinylenes): A Powerful Access to High‐Molecular‐Weight Blue‐Emitting Polymers

For the first time, the successful Gilch synthesis of poly(ortho‐phenylene vinylenes) (ortho‐PPVs) is reported. The molar mass of the constitutionally homogeneous ortho‐PPVs reaches values as high as M_w ≈ 300 000 Da. The ortho‐connectivity of the repeating units forces the chains to assume closely packed conformations even in good solvents. Significant perturbation of the π–electron systems and considerable shortening of the conjugation lengths are the consequences. UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence maxima consequently are shifted clearly toward shorter wavelengths compared to, e.g., classic para‐PPVs.

     

Synthesis and Antiproliferative Effect of Halogenated Coumarin Derivatives

A series of 6- and 6,8-halocoumarin derivatives have been investigated as potential antiproliferative compounds against a panel of tumor and normal cell lines. Cytotoxic effects were determined by the MTT method. To investigate the potential molecular mechanism involved in the cytotoxic effect, apoptosis assay, cell cycle analysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reduced glutathione analysis were performed. Among the screened compounds, coumarins 6,8-dibromo-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbonitrile 2h and 6,8-diiodo-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbonitrile 2k exhibited the most antiproliferative effect in thyroid cancer-derived cells TPC-1. The apoptosis assay showed that both 2h and 2k induced apoptosis in TPC-1 thyroid cancer cells. According to these experiments, both coumarins induced a slight increase in TPC-1 cells in the G2/M phase and a decrease in the S phase. A significant increase in ROS levels was observed in TPC-1 treated with diiodocoumarin 2k, while the dibromocoumarin 2h induced a decrease in ROS in a dose and time-dependent manner.     

Chemometrical strategies for feature selection and data compression applied to NIR and MIR spectra of extra virgin olive oils for cultivar identification

The possibility provided by Chemometrics to extract and combine (fusion) information contained in NIR and MIR spectra in order to discriminate monovarietal extra virgin olive oils according to olive cultivar (Casaliva, Leccino, Frantoio) has been investigated.Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was applied as a classification technique on these multivariate and non-specific spectral data both separately and jointly (NIR and MIR data together).In order to ensure a more appropriate ratio between the number of objects (samples) and number of variables (absorbance at different wavenumbers), LDA was preceded either by feature selection or variable compression. For feature selection, the SELECT algorithm was used while a wavelet transform was applied for data compression.Correct classification rates obtained by cross-validation varied between 60% and 90% depending on the followed procedure. Most accurate results were obtained using the fused NIR and MIR data, with either feature selection or data compression.Chemometrical strategies applied to fused NIR and MIR spectra represent an effective method for classification of extra virgin olive oils on the basis of the olive cultivar.     

Multiplexed Determination of Amino‐Terminal Pro‐B‐Type Natriuretic Peptide and C‐Reactive Protein Cardiac Biomarkers in Human Serum at a Disposable Electrochemical Magnetoimmunosensor

A rapid magnetoimmunosensor for the simultaneous determination of two cardiac biomarkers, amino‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP) and C‐reactive protein (CRP), in human serum is described. Specific capture antibodies were covalently immobilized onto carboxylic acid‐modified magnetic beads. The quantification of NT‐proBNP and CRP was performed by using indirect competitive and sandwich configurations, respectively, and horseradish peroxidase‐labeled tracers. The use of dual screen‐printed carbon electrodes allowed the achievement of simultaneous independent amperometric readout for each cardiac biomarker. The developed methodology showed very low limits of detection (0.47 ng mL^?1). An international standard for CRP serum spiked with NT‐proBNP was analyzed to evaluate the usefulness of the magnetoimmunosensor.     

Nonequilibrium charge recombination from the excited adiabatic state of donor-acceptor complexes

A model of nonequilibrium charge recombination from an excited adiabatic state of a donor-acceptor complex induced by the nonadiabatic interaction operator is considered. The decay of the excited state population prepared by a short laser pulse is shown to be highly nonexponential. The influence of the excitation pulse carrier frequency on the ultrafast charge recombination dynamics of excited donor-acceptor complexes is explored. The charge recombination rate constant is found to decrease with increasing excitation frequency. The variation of the excitation pulse carrier frequency within the charge transfer absorption band of the complex can alter the effective charge recombination rate by up to a factor 2. The magnitude of this spectral effect decreases strongly with increasing electronic coupling.     

Phosphorescent self-assembled Pt(II) tetranuclear metallocycles

A series of rigid Pt(II) diimine diacetylide complexes and their corresponding metallocyclic derivatives were synthesized through coordination-driven self-assembly. The photophysical properties of these complexes have been studied in detail, revealing exceptionally high RT phosphorescence quantum yields and lifetimes when the excited state becomes localized on the π-conjugated bridging-ligand following intramolecular charge-transfer sensitization.     

Synthesis and characterization of some vanadyl complexes with flavonoid derivatives as potential insulin-mimetic agents

Two new complexes with formula VOL₂·nH₂O ((1) L: 4′,5,7-trihydroxyflavone-7-rhamnoglucoside (naringin), n = 8; (2) L: 3′,4′,7-tris[O-(2-hydroxyethyl)]rutin (troxerutin), n = 0) were synthesised and characterised. The IR and UV–Vis spectral data indicate that these flavones act as bidentate chelating ligands and generate VO(II) complexes with a square-pyramidal stereochemistry. The thermal analysis (TG, DTA) elucidated the composition and also the number and nature of the water molecules. The thermal behavior indicates also a strong interaction between oxovanadium (IV) and these oxygen donor ligands.     

Multi-dimensional asymptotically quasi-Toeplitz Markov chains and their application in queueing theory

Multi-dimensional asymptotically quasi-Toeplitz Markov chains with discrete and continuous time are introduced. Ergodicity and non-ergodicity conditions are proven. Numerically stable algorithm to calculate the stationary distribution is presented.
