Variational principles of magnetostatics of superconductors. I

Fundamental and dual variational principles of magnetostatics of superconductors are formulated. It is shown how test fields can be expressed in terms of vector and scalar potentials. Effect of plasma treatment of the dielectric on electroforming of a thin-film MIM system

It was found that when a thin dielectric film is exposed to the plasma of a low-voltage gas discharge, channels with elevated conductivity form in the film and these channels significantly facilitate the subsequent electroforming of the MIM system. It is concluded from the experimental data that even in the case of metallic electrodes highly conducting channels are formed in the dielectric by electronic processes occurring under the conditions of a strong electric field and not by diffusion of the electrode material.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 10, pp. 94–98, October, 1991.     

Effect of dynamic loading on the structure of amorphous alloy Fe66Ni12Si20B2

Transmission- and depth-selective-conversion-electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (DCEMS) were applied to study variation of structural state in the bulk and in the surface layer (500, 1000, 1500 Å thick) of amorphous alloy under certain optimum conditions of the dynamic loading. The alloy structure remains amorphous. However, a certain variation of the short range order. An amorphous oxide Fe₂O₃ is formed on the amorphous alloy surface.     

Synthesis and thermal crosslinking of oxazolidine‐functionalized polyurethanes

A new oxazolidine derivative was obtained from phenol, 2‐amino‐2‐methylpropane‐1,3‐diol and paraformaldehyde. The reaction of this novel oxazolidine diol with phenylisocyanate lead to a urethane model compound which can be polymerized thermally by oxazolidine ring opening to give a Mannich bridge structure. Linear segmented polyurethanes were prepared by reaction of different ratios of oxazolidine diol and commercial polyethylenglycol (M_w ～ 400) with 4,4′‐methylenbis (cyclohexylisocyanate) (HMDI, 90% isomers mixture). The polyurethanes were thermally characterized and crosslinked by oxazolidine ring opening to obtain materials which showed improved thermal stability. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A symmetry-adapted force-constant lattice-dynamical model for single-walled carbon nanotubes

We develop a lattice-dynamical model based on the screw symmetry of single-walled carbon nanotubes that allows for reducing the size of the dynamical matrix to six, for all tube chiralities. The model uses force constants derived from fitting to the phonon dispersion of 2D graphite. We present the calculation procedure in a clear and transparent way, making the model easier to follow. We calculate the phonon dispersions of a number of nanotubes of different chiralities. The splitting of two highest Raman active modes and the radial breathing mode frequency are studied by changing the tube diameter and chirality.     

Improved scales of spaces and elliptic boundary-value problems. III

We study elliptic boundary-value problems in improved scales of functional Hilbert spaces on smooth manifolds with boundary. The isotropic Hörmander-Volevich-Paneyakh spaces are elements of these scales. The local smoothness of a solution of an elliptic problem in an improved scale is investigated. We establish a sufficient condition under which this solution is classical. Elliptic boundary-value problems with parameter are also studied.     

Synthesis and thermal behaviour of salicylaldimine-based liquid crystalline symmetrical dimers

A series of symmetrical dimers consisting of salicylaldimine moieties connected by flexible alkylene central spacer via ether linkages has been synthesized. In order to validate the empirical rule suggested by Date et al. to account for the smectic behaviour of such dimers, the chain length of the terminal alkoxy chain has been kept constant (C₈) while the number of methylene units in the central spacer was varied from C₃ to C₁₁. Another aim of the present investigation was to understand structure-property relationship in these dimers in which the salicylaldimine mesogenic segment has been used for the first time in dimers. The mesomorphic behaviour of these dimers was evaluated using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the structure of some of the mesophases has been further investigated with the help of X-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that the dimers consisting of 3 to 8 methylene units in the flexible spacer show only smectic (smectic C and smectic A) phases. For the dimers containing 4, 6 and 8 methylene units in the central spacer, a unique filament growth pattern has been observed in the smectic A phase while cooling from the isotropic phase. The dimers containing of C₉ to C₁₁ methylene groups exhibit the nematic phase in addition to smectic modifications. This observation indicates that when the terminal chains are shorter than the spacer, the tendency to form smectic phases is not fully extinguished but is perhaps reduced.     

On the weakened Siegel’s conjecture

In the paper, we prove that two definitions of E-functions present in mathematics are equivalent if E-functions satisfy second-order linear differential equations.
