Ultra'soft X-ray diagnostics of short-living plasmas

Ultrasoft X-ray plasma diagnostics in IPP is realized by using X-ray diodes with Al photocathodes and submicrometer nitrocellulose filters. The X-ray detections system is suitable for measurements in a relatively broad range of radiation intensities in the spectral interval of (10–1000) eV with the time resolution of (1–10) ns under various plasma conditions. Construction, calibration and characteristic properties of the measuring apparatus are described. To illustrate its use, some results of the diagnostics of REB-heated plasma are presented.We would like to acknowledge Dr. P. unka for many helpful discussions and Dr. J. Precipitation structure in an Al-2·0 at. % Zn-1·0 at. % Mg alloy within and close to the grain boundaries and its effects on mechanical properties

During ageing the Al-2·0 at. %Zn-1·0 at. % Mg alloy at elevated temperatures the width of the precipitation free zone (PFZ) at both sides of the grain boundaries (GB) is identical with that free of quenched-in dislocation loops (DL). After sufficiently long ageing a band of precipitates is growing inside the former PFZ and the DLs in the midgrain regions act as sites for the heterogeneous nucleation of the-phase. Two precipitation processes significantly affect the mechanical properties. TEM correlates grain boundary precipitate density and morphology with grain boundary misorientation.     

Effects of small external magnetic fields on the hyperfine field of iron in iron metal above the curie temperature: A new method for studying critical phenomena

By applying magnetic fields up to 2 kG, the equation of state and the critical dynamics of a spin system near its critical point can be studied with the Mössbauer effect. As an example, the equation of state near the Curie temperature of iron is investigated yielding the critical exponent =4.84±0.15.     

Slowly relaxing tunneling states in neutron-irradiated quartz: A study of the internal friction at audio-frequencies

The internal friction of two neutron-irradiated quartz samples was measured at audio-frequency as a function of temperature. This is an extension of acoustic measurements to much lower frequencies and thus to much longer time scales. A temperature independent behaviour has been observed and is discussed in the framework of the tunnelling model. One of the major assumptions of this model regarding the tunnelling states with long relaxation time could be verified for neutron-irradiated quartz.     

Searching for optimal configurations by simulated tunneling

Optimization theory deals with algorithms finding the lowest cost (energy) configuration in a minimal number of steps. When the cost function has many local minima, the deterministic algorithms become easily trapped in suboptimal solutions. The simulated annealing method tries to overcome this difficulty by introducting thermal noise in the problem. Here we explore the possibility of implementing search procedures analogous to the quantum tunneling effect. The suggested dynamics is a guided diffusion process of an interactingpopulation of configurations. Different dynamical aspects of the search process are formulated first in a simple one-dimensional tight-binding model with a hierarchical potential. The new algorithm is then applied to the Traveling Salesman Problem. It is demonstrated that the use of interacting, evolving populations of tours representing our wave packet leads to systematic improvements and possibly, to the optimal tour. In addition, the structure of the cost function landscape for a given instance becomes locally accessible. The performance of the algorithm and its implications for parallel computing and genetic programming are briefly discussed.     

Characterization of reaction products formed during thin-layer chromatographic detection of thiocarbamate herbicides

The reaction between thiocarbamate herbicides and 2,6-dichlorobenzoquinone-N-chloroimine or 2,6-dibromobenzoquinone-N-chloroimine is suitable for the detection of these herbicides on thin-layer plates with high sensitivity. The reactions were followed by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. We have established the formation of 2,6-dichlorobenzoquinone-S-alkyl sulphenylimines. In the case of the bromo-derivative, halogen exchange and substitution on the quinone ring took place simultaneously leading to the formation of mixed halogenated 2,6-dihalo- and, in addition, 2,3,6-trihalobenzoquinone-S-alkyl sulphenylimines. The final product of the detection reaction, i.e. 2,6-dichlorobenzoquinone-S-alkyl sulphenylimine was reacted with 2,6-dibromobenzoquinone-N-chloroimine where 2,6-dichloro-3-bromobenzoquinone-S-alkyl sulphenylimine formed as a consequence of the looser bromine-carbon linkage on the 2 and 6 positions of the quinone ring.     

2-Amino-4,4-disubstituted-5-carboxymethyl-Δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-4-ium chlorides and their recyclization in acetic anhydride

2-Methylamino-4,4-disubstituted-5-carboethoxymethyl-²-1,3,4-oxadiazolin -4-ium chlorides were obtained from the reaction of 1,1-disubstituted-4-methylsemicarbazides with ethyl propiolate in the presence of hydrochloric acid. After hydrolysis of the ester these chlorides recyclize in acetic anhydride to 1-substituted-3-acetoxy-1H-pyrazoles. The difference in the direction of ring opening with acetic anhydride in the betaines of 1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-acetic acids and their thia-analogs has been demonstrated.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 12, pp. 1685–1688, 1992.     

Pseudo-cross-conjugated mesomeric betaines. 1. Synthesis of pseudo-cross-conjugated mesomeric betaines from quinoxaline derivatives

A new method for the synthesis of pseudo-cross-conjugated mesomeric betainic heterocyclic compounds with an angular nitrogen atom has been developed consisting in the reaction of 1,4-dielectrophile — -carbethoxy-2-(3-chloro)quinoxalylacetonitrile with azoles. Experimental regularities have been studied and a reaction mechanism has been proposed including the stage of formation of an ylide from a quaternary azolium salt. A pseudo-crossconjugated mesomeric betainic heterocyclic compound containing a thiazole ring compound has been synthesized for the first time.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 11, pp. 1528–1533, November, 1992.     

Synthesis and investigation of the mesomorphic properties of pyran derivatives

4-[(5,6-Dihydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)methoxy]benzylidene-4-alkoxyanilines, which have the properties of smectic liquid crystals, were synthesized.
