Pyramidal indentations and focused-ion-beam machining have been used to study the damage during contact loading of textured columnar titanium nitride hard coatings on three steels and aluminium. The influence of the substrate hardness and coating thickness on the type and extent of fracture have been examined. In particular, the primary mechanism of deformation is shown to undergo a change from inter-columnar shear to other forms of subsurface damage. A physical model is proposed to explain this transition in the fracture mode. The implications of such behaviour for coating design are discussed.  相似文献

Porous zirconia ceramic monoliths have been extensively used in thermo-structural applications due to their inherent low thermal conductivity in combination with their adaptability to form complicated shapes through advanced ceramic processing techniques. However, extruded cellular honeycomb structures made from these materials have been less explored for thermal management applications. There exist large potential applications due to their unique configurations, resulting in better heat-management mechanisms. Some of the studies carried out on zirconia honeycombs are safeguarded through patents due to its technical importance, or the information is not in the public domain. In the present study, for the sake of comparison, honeycomb specimens with varying wall thicknesses and unit cell lengths maintaining almost same bulk density of around 90% theoretical and relative density of 0.34–0.37 were prepared and subjected to thermal conductivity evaluation along with the solid samples with relative density of 1.0 using monotonic heating regime methodology. In addition, the effect of channel shape was also evaluated using square and triangular channeled honeycombs with the same relative densities. The results obtained from these specimens were correlated with their configurations to bring out the advantages accrued by using the honeycomb with these configurations. It was observed that a significant decrease in thermal conductivity was achieved in honeycombs, which can be attributed to the behavior of various heat transfer mechanisms that are operative at high temperatures in combination with the considerable reduction in thermal mass and the consequent conduction through the solids.  相似文献

This study provides the first direct experimental measurements of the off-diagonal relaxation matrix element coefficients for line mixing in air-broadened methane spectra for any vibrational band and the first off diagonal relaxation matrix elements associated with line mixing for pure methane in the ν2 + ν3 band of 12CH4. The speed-dependent Voigt profile with line mixing is used with a multispectrum nonlinear least squares curve fitting technique to retrieve the various line parameters from 11 self-broadened and 10 air-broadened spectra simultaneously. The room temperature spectra analyzed in this work are recorded at 0.011 cm−1 resolution with the McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer located at the National Solar Observatory, Kitt Peak, Arizona. The off-diagonal relaxation matrix element coefficients of ν2 + ν3 transitions between 4410 and 4629 cm−1 are reported for eighteen pairs with upper state J values between 2 and 11. The observed line mixing coefficients for self broadening vary from 0.0019 to 0.0390 cm−1 atm−1 at 296 K. The measured line mixing coefficients for air broadening vary from 0.0005 to 0.0205 cm−1 atm−1 at 296 K.  相似文献

This paper highlights a novel technique to delineate the fatigue response of different regions within thin microstructurally graded platinum nickel aluminide bond coats. Notched clamped beam structures fabricated from distinct microstructural zones of these coatings are subjected to programmed cyclic bending using the nano-indentation system. A methodical approach is established herein to quantify the cyclic damage preceding crack pop-in by using the cyclic stiffness of the beam as an indicator to mark failure. Preliminary results from these tests show that there is a characteristic change in the stiffness of the beam before a crack pop-in event occurs and different regions within the coating show different stiffening characteristics. Factors affecting the measured stiffness such as offsets in the loading position and blunting of the notch tip have been estimated using the finite element method. A graded flow stress model has been proposed and implemented in FEM to quantify the local flow stress changes accompanying the measured rise in stiffness. Electron transparent foils lifted off from the notched region of the beam post-testing suggests that the cyclic stiffening of the beams occurs due to dislocation hardening in the plastically deformed region close to the notch tip. Toughening mechanisms active in the crack wake have thus been investigated and correlated to the measured cyclic stiffness.  相似文献

A rapid colorimetric method of determining hydrolyzable chlorine content of lindane has been developed. The region of maximum absorption, Beer's law is obeyed between 80 and 320 μg/ml of solution. The sensitivity of this method is compared with Volhard's titration method and is found to be superior. With the above method, the insecticide can be estimated in pure form with an accuracy of ±0.8 to 1.9%.  相似文献

Mutants of Phycomyces. abnormal in their phototropic responses (the mad mutants), have been tested for their responses in light-induced carotene synthesis (LICS). The amount of carotene synthesized at any given fluence is significantly lower in the madA, madB and madD mutants than in the wild type. The amount of carotene is not lower in other mad mutants ( madC, madE, madF and madG ). The double mutant mad A madB and the triple mutant mad A madB madC show stronger effects. The wild type strain, as well as those carrying a single mad mutation ( madA and madB ) or those carrying two or three mad mutations ( madA madB. madA madB madC ) show closely similar sensitivity to LICS. This contrasts with phototropism and photoinitiation of sporangiophores which are sensitive to extremely small signals in the wild type and in which the madA mutation decreases the sensitivity by nearly a factor of 104 and madB mutation by a factor of 105. It appears that LICS does not share the signal amplification mechanisms characteristic of the other two responses.  相似文献

The functional form of acceptance probabilities in Monte Carlo algorithms bears a resemblance to the distance functions which are specifically defined to be bracketed by the unit interval. This observation led us to seek the average distance between any two points on the unit interval and this by analogy resulted in a suggestion of an upper and a lower bound of 1/2 and 1/3, respectively, for the acceptance ratio or the average acceptance probability in Monte Carlo computer simulations.  相似文献

The chlorination of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) by chloramine-B (CAB) in HCl medium at 303 K indicates simultaneous catalysis by H+ and Cl. The reaction is first order in [CAB] and [HCl], but fractional order in [PABA]. The observed solvent isotope effect is 1.52. A suitable mechanism is proposed.
