Pushing exercise program to correct glottal incompetence

A voice therapy program using pushing exercises to correct glottal incompetence is described. The program utilizes various types of instrumentation to determine whether or not a given patient is likely to benefit from the treatment. The program also provides feedback of target voices. Three cases with incomplete glottal closure and subsequent vocal dysphonia characterized by an asthenic breathy quality are used to illustrate the program. Details of the program, termination criteria, and problems and precautions learned from treating 29 patients over a 3-year period are presented.     

Tech Prep Academics: Using Real Life Connections to Develop Scientific and Mathematical Literacy

Based upon the recommendations of professional organizations in science and mathematics education, children at K-6 levels need to be exposed to activities involving scientific methodology, the discovery of new knowledge and the integration of science and mathematics curricula. This study describes several distinct kinds of problem solving investigations identified from real life situations which can be adapted in intellectually honest ways for selected levels of the elementary school curriculum. The activities lend themselves to interactions with businesses and industries in the children's community and involve the children in a variety of non-traditional instructional activities such as oral presentations, small group collaborative efforts, and written reports. Finally, the investigations promote the integration of science and mathematics curricula and suggest the role curricula can play in the lives of children.

An Approximate Distribution for the Maximum Order Complexity

In this paper we give an approximate probability distribution for the maximum order complexity of a random binary sequence. This enables the development of statistical tests based on maximum order complexity for the testing of a binary sequence generator. These tests are analogous to those based on linear complexity.

In the reaction with benzothiophene, t-butyl hypochlorite acts simultaneously as a smooth oxidizing agent and as a chlorinating agent since it is a source of both hypochlorous acid and chlorine. The mixture of all the products obtained imply that the reaction intermediate is the unstable benzothiophene I-oxide which was shown to be present by the stop flow technique. The chlorine formed traps the highly reactive benzothiophene 1-oxide in situ to give the observed products.     

Emission from the afterglow of an ozonizer discharge through nitrogen

The afterglow produced from an ozonizer discharge of nitrogen showed a well developed second positive system and some emission bands from the first negative system in the virtual absence of other N₂ emissions. The NO_γ system was also observed but the NO_β system could not be detected. These observations are interpreted on the assumption that N₂ (A ³∑_u⁺) and vibrationally excited N₂ (X ¹∑_g⁺) are the principal energy carriers responsible for the excitation of the afterglow.

The decay scheme of⁶²Zn has been investigated by studying the yield functions, angular distributions and coincidence relation-ships of theγ-rays emitted in the⁶³Cu(p, 2nγ) and⁶⁰Ni(α, 2nγ) reactions. Spins up to7? were assigned to the observed states.
