This study examined the effects of mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss on vowel perception abilities of young, hearing-impaired (YHI) adults. Stimuli were presented at a low conversational level with a flat frequency response (approximately 60 dB SPL), and in two gain conditions: (a) high level gain with a flat frequency response (95 dB SPL), and (b) frequency-specific gain shaped according to each listener's hearing loss (designed to simulate the frequency response provided by a linear hearing aid to an input signal of 60 dB SPL). Listeners discriminated changes in the vowels /I e E inverted-v ae/ when F1 or F2 varied, and later categorized the vowels. YHI listeners performed better in the two gain conditions than in the conversational level condition. Performances in the two gain conditions were similar, suggesting that upward spread of masking was not seen at these signal levels for these tasks. Results were compared with those from a group of elderly, hearing-impaired (EHI) listeners, reported in Coughlin, Kewley-Port, and Humes [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 104, 3597-3607 (1998)]. Comparisons revealed no significant differences between the EHI and YHI groups, suggesting that hearing impairment, not age, is the primary contributor to decreased vowel perception in these listeners.  相似文献

Micro-structure can talk when documentation is missing. In ancient Roman or medieval periods, kings, queens, or just rich people decorated their clothes or even their horse covers richly with miniature jewels or metal threads. The origin or the fabrication techniques of these ancient threads is often unknown. Thirteen thread samples made of gold or gilt silver manufactured during the last sixteen hundred years are investigated for the micro-structure in terms of dislocation density, crystallite size, and planar defects. In a few cases, these features are compared with sub-structure of similar metallic threads prepared in modern, twentieth century workshops. The sub-structure is determined by X-ray line profile analysis, using high resolution diffractograms with negligible instrumental broadening. On the basis of the sub-structure parameters, we attempt to assess the metal-threads manufacturing procedures on samples stemming from the fourth century A.D. until now.  相似文献

A series of 10 new carbohydrate-substituted bipyridines were prepared from 2,2′-bipyridine-3,3′-dicarboxylic acid, itself easily available from ortho-phenanthroline. As a preliminary exploration of their use as chiral ligands, Cu(II)-catalysed asymmetric electrophilic fluorination of model β-ketoesters using these simple and easily accessible chiral bipyridines was studied. Only modest enantioselectivity was observed in this reaction, although the ee was in a similar range as those provided by known and more elaborate ligands.  相似文献

Background  

Lesion studies in human and non-human primates have linked several different regions of prefrontal cortex (PFC) with the ability to inhibit inappropriate motor responses. However, recent functional neuroimaging studies have specifically implicated right inferior PFC in response inhibition. Right frontal dominance for inhibitory motor control has become a commonly accepted view, although support for this position has not been consistent. Particularly conspicuous is the lack of data on the importance of the homologous region in the left hemisphere. To investigate whether the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) is critical for response inhibition, we used neuropsychological methodology with carefully characterized brain lesions in neurological patients.  相似文献

Targeted alpha therapy is an emerging strategy for the treatment of disseminated cancer. [223Ra]RaCl2 is the only clinically approved alpha particle-emitting drug, and it is used to treat castrate-resistant prostate cancer bone metastases, to which [223Ra]Ra2+ localizes. To specifically direct [223Ra]Ra2+ to non-osseous disease sites, chelation and conjugation to a cancer-targeting moiety is necessary. Although previous efforts to stably chelate [223Ra]Ra2+ for this purpose have had limited success, here we report a biologically stable radiocomplex with the 18-membered macrocyclic chelator macropa. Quantitative labeling of macropa with [223Ra]Ra2+ was accomplished within 5 min at room temperature with a radiolabeling efficiency of >95%, representing a significant advancement over conventional chelators such as DOTA and EDTA, which were unable to completely complex [223Ra]Ra2+ under these conditions. [223Ra][Ra(macropa)] was highly stable in human serum and exhibited dramatically reduced bone and spleen uptake in mice in comparison to bone-targeted [223Ra]RaCl2, signifying that [223Ra][Ra(macropa)] remains intact in vivo. Upon conjugation of macropa to a single amino acid β-alanine as well as to the prostate-specific membrane antigen-targeting peptide DUPA, both constructs retained high affinity for 223Ra, complexing >95% of Ra2+ in solution. Furthermore, [223Ra][Ra(macropa-β-alanine)] was rapidly cleared from mice and showed low 223Ra bone absorption, indicating that this conjugate is stable under biological conditions. Unexpectedly, this stability was lost upon conjugation of macropa to DUPA, which suggests a role of targeting vectors in complex stability in vivo for this system. Nonetheless, our successful demonstration of efficient radiolabeling of the β-alanine conjugate with 223Ra and its subsequent stability in vivo establishes for the first time the possibility of delivering [223Ra]Ra2+ to metastases outside of the bone using functionalized chelators, marking a significant expansion of the therapeutic utility of this radiometal in the clinic.

The therapeutic alpha-emitter 223Ra can be stably complexed in vivo, creating opportunities for the development of targeted radiopharmaceutical agents with this radionuclide.  相似文献

We present a novel, simple and easily implementable algorithm to report all intersections in an embedding of a complete graph. For graphs with N vertices and complexity K measured as the number of segments of the embedding, the running time of the algorithm is Θ(K+NM), where M is the maximum number of edges cut by any vertical line. Our algorithm handles degeneracies, such as vertical edges or multiply intersecting edges, without requiring numerical perturbations to achieve general position.The algorithm is based on the sweep line technique, one of the most fundamental techniques in computational geometry, where an imaginary line passes through a given set of geometric objects, usually from left to right. The algorithm sweeps the graph using a topological line, borrowing the concept of horizon trees from the topological sweep method [H. Edelsbrunner, L.J. Guibas, Topologically sweeping an arrangement, J. Comput. Syst. Sci. 38 (1989) 165-194; J. Comput. Syst. Sci. 42 (1991) 249-251 (corrigendum)].The novelty in our approach is to control the topological line through the use of the moving wall that separates at any time the graph into two regions: the region of known structure, in front of the moving wall, and the region that may contain intersections generated by edges-that have not yet been registered in the sweep process-behind the wall.Our method has applications to graph drawing and for depth-based statistical analysis, for computing the simplicial depth median for a set of N data points [G. Aloupis, S. Langerman, M. Soss, G. Toussaint, Algorithms for bivariate medians and a Fermat-Torricelli problem for lines, Comp. Geom.
