Abstract Fibres were prepared from the nematic melt of poly(2,2′-dimethyl-4,4′-biphenylene phenylterephthalate). The phenyl substitution in the terephthalic acid moiety in combination with the non-coplanar biphenyl moiety prevent crystallization of this thermotropic polyester. Oriented fibres were prepared by two different methods. Similarly to other thermotropic liquid crystal polymer fibres, chain orientation can be achieved by an elongational flow in a down draw process. This polyester also allows tensile deformation of the spun fibres around the glass transition temperature. In both routes similar degrees of orientation and mechanical properties were obtained. Tensile moduli in the order of 40–45 GPa and tensile strengths up to 550–650 MPa were obtained. The orientation function values were determined to be in the order of 0·8–0·9. A comparison with other unsubstituted thermotropic liquid crystal polyesters at the same level of orientation revealed that the moduli are the same, although the substituents increase the chain diameter. This result may be attributed to an increase of the apparent shear modulus due to an interlocking mechanism of the rigid lateral substituents. 相似文献

Surfactants, which are prevalent at industrial sites and in the environment generally, are potential risk factors in human carcinogenesis. The widespread industrial use of surfactants such as 4-alkylphenol ethoxylates and their prevalence in many cleaning products have provoked studies about surfactant concentrations in water and their toxicity levels. Up to now, these substances have mainly been tested on aquatic organisms. Though tests on human cell lines are rare. The alkaline Comet assay was performed to evaluate the genotoxicity of 4-nonylphenol ethoxylate, a biodegradable product of 4-alkylphenol ethoxylate, in human lymphocytes. Concentrations tested ranged from 0.15 to 150 µg/mL. Test concentrations of 10 to 15 µg/mL caused an increase level of DNA migration in human cells, but without inducing excessive toxicity (viability > 80%). Though induced levels of DNA migration starting at concentrations of 30 µg/mL may have been due to excessive levels of cytotoxicity (viability < 70%). Based on these data, 4-nonylphenol ethoxylate can induce DNA damage in human lymphocytes but at higher concentrations than are normally found in river or drinking water. However, considering the prevalence of surfactants, the measured genotoxicity of these substances is of concern. Further investigations on human target cells are necessary to evaluate the carcinogenic impact of surfactants and reconsider their environmental acceptance. 相似文献

We report the synthesis and characterization of well‐defined homo‐ and diblock copolymers containing poly(furfuryl glycidyl ether) (PFGE) via living anionic ring‐opening polymerization using different initiators. The obtained materials were characterized by SEC, MALDI‐TOF MS, and 1H NMR spectroscopy and molar masses of up to 9400 g/mol were obtained for PFGE homopolymers. If the amphiphilic diblock copolymer PEG‐block‐PFGE was dissolved in water, micelles with a PFGE core and a PEG corona were formed. Hereby, the hydrophobic PFGE core domains were used for the incorporation of a suitable bismaleimide and heating to 60 °C induced the crosslinking of the micellar core via Diels‐Alder chemistry. In order to form suitable systems designed for resonance energy transfer, a series of monodisperse methacrylate‐based monomers containing rigid π‐conjugated oligo(phenylene ethynylenes) with different sizes of the conjugated systems ( M1 – M3 ), and therefore different optoelectronic properties, were synthesized and subsequently polymerized using the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization technique ( P1 – P3 ). In addition, these oligomers were also copolymerized with methyl methacrylate. The obtained polymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and analytical ultracentrifugation. The photophysical properties of the polymers were studied by UV–vis absorption and emission spectroscopy in diluted solutions as well as in thin films and compared to the photophysics of the corresponding monomers. Thereby, changes going from monomeric to polymeric systems could be detected in fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes pointing to energy trapping, e.g., energy transfer. Donor–acceptor copolymers containing different numbers of monomeric units within the side chain exhibit differences in the emission spectra, indicating that energy trapping in polymers is very sensitive to structural properties such as the chain length. UV–vis absorption spectroscopy as well as time‐resolved lifetime studies indicate intrapolymer and interpolymer energy transfer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
